Janelle, I think a better question is what do you think?

You're not obligated to break bread with anybody but if you want to go, then go.

What are you afraid might happen? And, more to the point, don't you trust yourself to capably handle any uncomfortable situation that might arise?

I just want to avoid awkwardness.  Like if he's interested in me, I'm not, then I have to tell him I'm not, then it's weird seeing him at swim practice.  You know- that's what I want to avoid.  As far as getting naked- I'm not worried about trusting myself.  I keep this baby clothed!!!

If you want to avoid awkward situations, don't leave your house. And don't answer your door. And don't respond to any man who smiles or speaks to you. Or woman, cuz you never know if they're homosexual.

It doesn't have to be weird or awkward. Maybe if you explore why you react or feel that way (your reactions are about you and not him, after all) then you can learn to deal with it and not let it get you worked up.

As for trusting yourself, I didn't say trust yourself not to get naked. I asked if you trust yourself to competently manage awkward situations. Maybe this is the problem?

Runnergirl, you seem to generate some of the most interesting (controversial?) threads.  My two cents is is that if he asked you to dinner and he's paying (however he rationalizes the source of funds), it's a date.  Can you imagine a female swim coach making you the same deal (assuming she's heterosexual)?  Or your swim coach (assuming he's heterosexual) taking out a male swimmer for dinner?

No Comet- I AM assertive.  You haven't seen me in action.  I am ALWAYS the one who has to tell the guy "this is only as friends".  I've said that so many times (bringing it up myself) that I don't even flinch anymore.  I think what I'll do is next time I talk to him and he brings it up the topic of dinner, that's when I'll establish the boundaries.  If he's cool, he'll appreciate my honesty and won't care.  If he just wanted me to "wocork" his wahoo, then he won't waste his time taking me to dinner and will find someone else. In the mean time, I'm going to PM Rocketman and see when I can meet his bro

Oh no Ken- it can't be a date.  I've taken a break from dating until the end of the year.  So it can only be as friends so I don't violate my own rule   And BTW- I have been wanting to write a book about my single life- it's always so interesting.

So this totally confuses me. First of all, what's with all of the dating and hot tri guy and "this guy at the gym" threads if you have a dating moratorium? What's the point of the dating moratorium? To have some Janelle time? That's great, but why do you torture yourself like this then?

And secondly, it seems like it will always be a fine line going to dinner, one on one, with a person of the opposite sex (or same sex, if you're so inclined), between a Just friends" thing and a date.

When did you put the brakes on dating? This week? Just wondering

Seriously, maybe you should take a break from over analyzing all the guys in your life (coaches, gym guys, guys to take your number, get your number from friends, etc) and just let it happen...break or no break.

I think now that your training will be a little lighter (after the race) it might be the time to be open to dating, less Janelle tri time.

It's a long story.  Hard to explain and confusing.  Don't worry- I'll make sure to explain it to you on the long car ride down to Miami- plenty of time- he,he!

No actually it was back in July.  My time was up at the end of September, and life has been so simple without anti-tri guys that I extended it   Long story- we'll talk later.
