Member 115 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread Is anyone doing the Ready to Run 20 on the 19th? I didn't do it last year and wonder what to expect from the atmosphere...more "training run" or race? I have no intention of racing, just like the idea of a supported course for my last 20-miler. |

Elite 2673 Muskego, WI | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread I just watched "Spirit of the Marathon" and the 20-mile thing looked to be an organized training run based on the small bits they showed in the movie. Anyone know anything about the Travelodge downtown? That's where my room is reserved but I'm now hearing it's a dump. I can deal with certain dumpiness, but... Also, the expo appears on the map to be quite a distance? Walk or cab/bus? |

Extreme Veteran 717 Chicago | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread I am nowhere near the point of being able to run a marathon yet but I'll definitely be cheering you all on around mile 24/25 (on that last stretch on Michigan Ave around 14th Street). Good luck everyone! |

Expert 1226 Chicago | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread So apparently I'm running. I was one of 15 folks selected for Team VW, so I guess this means I need to start training? |

Also, the expo appears on the map to be quite a distance? Walk or cab/bus? Not sure about the hotel. If it's the Travelodge on Harrison, it doesn't exactly get rave reviews. As for the expo, if you stick with the hotel, you'll want to catch a bus or cab (www.transitchicago.com/ ). The expo is at McCormick Place, which is a couple of miles or so from the hotel. Normally, it'd be a good walk, but the day before a marathon you probably don't want to spend that much time walking. Or maybe you do? Up to you. |

Member 72 | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread I think I am chaperoning our Cross Country Team to an aid station at mile 15-20 with another coach. It's a bunch of high school kids though...So I guess in a sense I will be supervising one of the aid stations. I'd say if high-school kids (though mature and great kids) aren't your thing maybe to keep looking. Otherwise I can check with some of our other coaches and see if its ok to get your name on our volunteer list for a Chicago Marathon Volunteer jacket (The volunteer swag is AWESOME). |

Master 1704 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread Wife and I will also be there. Second marathon for me, third for my wife. We are in Corral B. Funny: I sent in my MCM certificate for seeding and they set both my wife and I in the same corral...and she is a 5 hour marathoner! This is great though as it will be our first marathon together (we have a 4 year old daughter so it is hard to both do the same race). Can't wait to get this race rocking. I broke my wrist three weeks ago and have a nice blue cast on my arm up to my elbow! It is a big time PIA, especially in this North Carolina heat. Weather willing, I will attempt a BQ with this stupid cast on. Got nothing to lose. Worst case is I pass out and they cut off my cast and that aint bad at all! |

And by super excited if you mean obsessively checking the extended weather forecast, constantly using hand sanitizer, and planning out next week's menu while agonizing over every ache and pain, then yes...I am super excited. |

Q you are always a riot! Yes that's exactly what I mean! 6 days left now! I check the weather constantly as well, but not sure exactly why, as forecasts are rarely accurate 'till its like the day before. Hand sanitizer you say huh. now there is an idea |

Expert 952 Chicagoland | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread Hey guys... question about marathon apparel. Does anyone know if it goes on clearance after the event? Niketown has a ton of stuff, from what I heard, and obviously, most of it is dated. Do they ever have stuff left over after the race at more bearable prices? (please say Yes).. |

Ill be leaving tomorrow morning to make the 8 hour drive to Chicago! This will be my first marathon, I figured it might as well be a good one. |

Expert 1358 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread Hey all, just a quick reminder to go over the map of the start area. It seems simple but it is a huge area and can be more confusing than u anticipate. Also if u r in a seeded corral you have a different gear check. And be aware the corrals close at 715. Good luck out there!!! |

Veteran 283 Ontario | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread That was painful. I think it hit mid 80s by the afternoon? The blisters on my feet felt like I was walking on broken glass for last 15k. Went to the aid station to drop out of the race, and while I was waiting for the ride I said "if Im going to be miserable about dropping out I might as well be miserable on the course". Pain is temporary! |

Master 1704 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread Brutal.... I was gunning for a BQ but that went out the door shortly after the halfway point. I was dead on target through 13.1 but after the course got out of downtown and devoid of shade, I melted down. The heat wiped my out on the second half and I mentally shut it down around 16m and then tried to just enjoy the rest of the race (which was also a fail). I have never had cramps like that (even with running in NC heat all summer). I should have adjusted my pace for the heat from the start but I figured I was gonna try and BQ or die trying. Finished almost 10min slower than my last marathon. Oh well, happens! What great weather for sightseeing in Chicago though! |

Veteran 283 Ontario | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread haha love the RR, very accurate! I helped carry a stranger to an aid station about 5km from the finish, and shortly after I was pretty sure I had lost my mind. I started dancing to all the music (I was walking full time at this point), and actually hugged a spectator who gave me pretzels. I didn't really feel that hot, but perhaps I was just unaware of what was really going on. |

Master 1348 Gurnee, IL | Subject: RE: Chicago Marathon 10/10/10: Official Thread One funny thing that happened. unlike triathlon events. The Chicago marathon had ONE station with gel's which i took. Around mile 19 I was in Dire need for another... I was looking/hoping/praying for one. then i saw it. There was a spectator that had a gu in her hand. she was not offering it to anyone. in fact it sort of looked like she was hiding it. but i saw it, and I had to make it mine! I really think she was planning on giving it to a runner relative of hers. but it was too late. I saw it and took it from her, as i ran by. she seemed really surprised. hell I was surprised i did it. then i realized it was double espresso flavor. yuck!! but i needed it and took it down gleefully. it helped me for a bt of time, bit alas it only delayed the onset of crampzilla. yes it was nasty out there. carnage everywhere. no pr for me. but i survived to fight another mary soon. congrats to all that muddled thru. you should be proud. revel in your moment of immortality. |

She's lucky she gave it up. Having you wrestle her to the ground and putting a boot to her head would have been needlessly traumatic...and brought on more cramps for you. Win-win. I am laughing my azz off right now. |

Where you were into global love (hugging for pretzels, carrying fellow racers?!) I was definitely aligned with the dark side. Dude huddled in a doorway? Keep running! Medics chasing a "wobbler"? Zig zag around them! There was no dancing, no hugging, no carrying. Glad you were out there to redeem humanity. Apparently I was just out there for MEMEME! Q |
