mattb1 - 2012-09-21 9:39 AM My iPhone5 is out for delivery right now.  Will be interested in seeing this map software in action.

How early did you pre-order?  I ordered Friday afternoon and mine is still "processing" (as in has NOT shipped).

About 10am CST on the 14th from Verizon.  Got the email with the tracking number on Wednesday.

Oh, you went through the carrier.  I went through the Apple Store to get the Discover card 5% cash back bonus.    Which in the end will probably be the reason mine takes so long, but I'm still hopeful.  They said 2-3 weeks but the arrival estimate they are giving right now is based on the 3 weeks...I'm hoping that's a case of under-promising so that customers will be thrilled when it "comes in early"....

You might be pleasantly surprised. We got the kids the 4S last Christmas. Same thing, expect delivery from Apple in 2-3 weeks and promised to be there before the 25th. They were sold out everywhere. We got them in two days!

Crossing my fingers!  Apple is a smart company...SURELY even they realized that the iPhone 5 was going to be immensely popular.  I'm truly hoping this whole "overwhelmed" by the response is just a PR stunt to create mayhem and hysteria.  SURELY they knew they needed to have several million phones available and created supply appropriately.  They KNEW sales of the 4S had slowed in anticipation of the yearly unveiling and they HAD to realize that a bunch of 3GS customers would be ready to also upgrade to the 5.  I know nothing about business and I could have told you that almost no matter what they released a TON of people were going to want it.

If they didn't realize that and plan appropriately then they are a bunch of idiots and my faith in their company will be seriously shaken!  I truly hope all the "sold out" mantra is just so that if someone's phone is a day later than THEY thought it would be the consumers won't be angry with Apple...

I upgraded to 6 on my 3GS...haven't really tried the maps function yet.

Not to hijack, but anyone else that upgraded on a 3GS...a question...when I was synching the phone I now have a big yellow section of "other" in the bar that shows how full your phone is...and it makes my phone "over capacity".  But I've never even been CLOSE to capacity before.  Anyone know why the big yellow "other" bar now?

It's always been there.  Other is everything that is not in the other categories so

email, docs, app storage (not the apps themselves but any files they store on the phone, e.g. dropbox favorites), map cache, text messages etc...

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10115184-233.html

Yes, but my "other" block PRIOR to the update was very very small...hardly noticeable.  Now it's HUGE and makes my phone over capacity...and I didn't do anything but update the software and synch the phone!

I'd do a backup and restore.  It's likely stuff leftover from the upgrade.

Okay, I'll try that tonight.  Never done it before.  Is that just the button under update that says to revert to factory if your phone isn't working right?

Yes but be sure to do a full backup first.

jcnipper - 2012-09-21 9:00 AM A question for the apple nerds:  If I update my 3Gs and 4s phones, will it default to apple maps?  Is the current google maps app available for download?  I'm interested in many of the iOS 6 features, but am not crazy about downgrading the maps (which I use all the time).
According to ABCnews, you have to use Google maps via the browser. I DO use the turn by turn, especially when I'm walking in the city looking for an address. But they upgraded email functionallity where you can acutally attach a photo while typing an email instead of being forced to start in the photos and then launching email from there. So you can actually attach one in a reply now.

Plus you can now set an alarm to use music. Woke up to Stevie Ray Vaughn this morning

I don't think the maps are that bad, but I do live in a city so coverage is likely better than in some places.

Found out that my wife updated her 4s yesterday. She called me to help her find a church she has a meeting at today. Apple maps could not find the address and she was lost. This is going to be the bane of my existence, I hate doing tech support over the phone and adding a lost a frustrated wife to it makes things way worse. Wonder if I can restore her backup...

I'm just peeved that the turn by turn and the facetime over cell network doesn't work on the 4.

Greedy jerks could have easily put it on the 4 as well, but I guess it is against the rules to keep a phone for more than 2 years.

Bout ready to jailbreak mine at this point.

Depends.  If you have not yet downloaded the update to iTunes you can do a restore (e.g. if you updated over the air).

If you downloaded the update via iTunes and upgraded you are stuck unless you want to jailbreak and junp thru a bunch of hoops.

Did the update on my 4S, really like the turn-by-turn navigation upgrade.  Have had zero map issues finding addresses or routing directions.  To be honest, I've never been that impressed with the Google Map fuctionality, particularly for navigation (no in-route progress updates on distance to next turn/waypoint, etc).  I think the Apple Maps fuctionality is a nice new feature.  Guess I'm in the minority.

It's always interesting reading the "Apple Bashing" threads anytime a new iOS release comes out.  "This is total crap, I'm dumping this junk and going 'Droid...man, Apple is really going to take a hit on this one...<FF a few weeks later> Yep, they just reported another record-setting quarter."  Guess it didn't suck that bad.

Anyone figure out the power saving "feature" yet? If you're on a call for longer than a minute, you now need to hit he button, slide the green bar then you can end the call. Before, you just tapped the screen and it woke up. It's WAY too complicated to hang up a call.

After all: It is supposed to be a phone, right?

Okay, update on my ugly yellow bar...I didn't have to reinstall...before I went through the hassle I checked my sync settings ONE MORE TIME...I have no idea why this should have mattered, but "sync only checked songs and videos" was not checked.  As soon as I checked that my big yellow bar went away.  Now, I know the blue/purple bars are for music and videos...so I have NO idea why they were affecting my "other" category...but...whatever...is good now.  I guess it was trying to save ALL of my music onto the phone and obviously that won't fit!

But it shouldn't have been yellow!

I will admit that I am very underwhelmed with the iPhone 5 in general, been using it since 2pm. The best thing about it so far is that I am no longer on AT&T. People at work who have Windows Phone and Android phones have more features and functionality. Will be interesting to see how big a step up the Windows 8 phone that comes out October 26th is compared to iPhone.

I've got a droid bionic currently and I use google maps almost every day so the maps app was very important to me.    I really wanted the icloud integration with my macbook, oh well.

So all the complaining about the maps made me look in to the differences. Two things that are examples on some of the Apple iOs6 bashing sites are the Washington Monument and the Golden Gate bridge. Here's some screen shots from my iPhone 5 and iPad with the google map program on it (not updated)

The complaint that the pin isn't ON the monument and actually a few hundred feet away is weak. And the bridge? Well if anything the pin is on a shadow on the google one. But honestly, who cares about this crap?

It took Google Maps 4-5 years to get to where they are today.  With a team about 10x the size of Apple's.  It's gonna be a while.

And I don't get too hung up on the image posted above.  We all know enough to figure out where the thing we are looking for is.  That's nitpicky.  But here is a real life example of the failure.

I was zoomed in within 1 mile of our local library. Searched for "library" and it returned the one 10 miles across town. Zoomed back in and searched for "north library". Same result. Searched for "North Sarasota Library" and it finally found it. Dialed the the phone # it gave me (the point of this endeavor). It was wrong. (facepalm)

As a test I searched for the "Fruitville Library", the name of the one across town it kept giving me. "No results found".  GAAAAHHHHH!

In comparison my wife's un-upgraded Google Maps iPhone found both just searching for "librarry" (yes I misspelled it on purpose) and gave me the correct phone #.

Believe it or not, the mapping errors I can deal with as I would think they will eventually get fixed.  What I dislike most about Apple Maps is that I can't find any type of street view which Google Maps does so well.  Is there any type of street view on Apple Maps that I cannot find?  That was a VERY cool feature and will be missed if it doesn't exist.

But until they get it fixed I'm stuck in the boonies because my phone (which worked great only a few days ago) now cannot get me to where I want to go.  Sorry, that's not good business.

Street View: Nope.  And you won't see it soon.  Google spent a TON of money making street view images. Apple is not going to do all that work over again, and Google is certainly not going to sell them the info.
