Veteran 230![]() ![]() ![]() Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Michigan Swim TrainingI just noticed the swim report says swimming is allowed from 11am to 7pm http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/swim_report... I have not been in the lake yet this year but plan on starting next week and I do it in the morning(before 11). Does anyone know if this is a law in which I can get a fine or just a suggestion? Thanks Dave |

Veteran 292![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Michigan Swim TrainingThe hours are when life guards are posted. Technically, yes, it is a law so you could get fined. But I have never heard of anyone getting fined. But if you like the idea of life guards watching you for safety, better swim from 11-7

I might be out there this Thursday night with the wife. Should she get her rental wetsuit in time. Which I hope she does. Going to sign up for the Crystal Lake OWS tonight for her and I. Really just a training race for both of us. More for her though as she is the opening leg of the Chicago Oly Relay for 2goggs and I. Anyone else thinking of going out? |

I was pulling all sorts of foliage off on the way back. I swam pretty far out on the way north to avoid the mobs of people that were there. I got out to the buoy and was getting tossed around pretty good. Oh and I swam through a bag. Not just a Dominick's bag either, a full-on burlap sack. It actually got wrapped around my arm for a minute. That sucked. |

Master 1322![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Chicago | Subject: RE: Lake Michigan Swim TrainingI was there too... One of those masses of people last night. (My Tri group was training) Not the nicest swim ever. Roughish water and like Mr2T I kept getting wrapped in lake weeds. Was supposed to go again today, but decided to go with a pool swim instead of dealing with it again today. First thing someone asks when I tell them I'm doing Chicago is "You're REALLY swimming in Lake Michigan?!". Yup......I guess I'm hardened for ecoli. |

I see swimming through that sheeyot like running in the rain or biking over hills -- makes you tougher and you can brag to your friends who swim in pristine, clean, flat bodies of water that you braved Lake Michigan. I did Ironman New Orleans 70.3 in Lake Ponchartrain, right after seeing a couple river rats swim through. I honestly thought it was a gator after the local started effing with me. Now I say `I MAY have swam with the gators in New Orleans, I can't be sure.' |

Veteran 111![]() Chicago | Subject: RE: Lake Michigan Swim TrainingI swam at the lake today and that water is nasty indeed! It was just fine when I was there a week ago, but between the lake grass, plastic bags (thankfully no burlap for me!) hair nets, and beer bottles today was quite a mess. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I should really go take a shower. |

Veteran 201![]() ![]() Winter Park, Florida | Subject: RE: Lake Michigan Swim TrainingI got to the Ohio Street Beach bike racks around 1pm and there wasn't a soul there....I didn't think much about that since it was a workday. Just as I got my backpack off, a guy stopped on his bike heading North on the trail and let me know the beach was closed for swimming (thanks for the heads up). He suggested that I head to Oak Street Beach. Lifeguard told me that the beach start to the last orange ladder was 800 meters/.5 miles. That's what I did. My sister was with me and we locked the bikes and helmets to a tree and brought the backpacks down to the beach. |

I'm supposed to meet some friends today to swim, but don't know if I want to freeze. Monday, the water was much colder than it was last week and Tuesday it was just a bit warmer. On both of those days, the Park District website was listing the water in the upper 60's (67-68F, I think), but at OSB, I'd wager the temp was in the low's 60's, tops. I'm off to OSB in a little bit. Park District says the temp at North Ave is 68F and the NOAA is saying the Chicago shore temp is 70F. I'll be happy with either! |

You can also try to check this site. http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/michigan/m54.html The temps are guesses by satellite reading. Cloud and haze cover can really skew the data. |
