I know the BT CoJ crowd is hardly a representative sample, and that a lot of things can change between now and November, but I'm really surprised at the margin here. Why? Looking at triathlon demographics, wouldn't you think the sport leans to the right?

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am shocked by the results. The area I live in is a solid Republican area now and 4 years ago I had only 2 people I kew were supporting Obama of those I know one has changed to Romney and he is a life long Dem. The other I will have to ask. But I thought COJ was more liberal. |

Eventually I may even support you. But really? You think abstaining from voting makes any difference? And before you argue that voting for any presidential candidate makes no difference in the present system, I'll simply ask you to consider all the ways the specific person America chooses to put in the Oval Office wields considerable influence, from foreign relations to our military actions/inactions in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Somalia, Syria, Central Africa and various other places, the Cabinet heads he/she chooses to head up the various departments of government, the justices he/she chooses to interpret law on the Supreme Court and Federal courts, EPA policy and much, much more. All of these individual choices by that one person we call "The President" can have a very real, meaningful impact on our lives even if you believe, in the end, we're all just pawns in a system that provides "The Illusion of Choice". scoobysdad - 2012-08-15 9:15 AM powerman - 2012-08-15 10:08 AM Where is none of the above? Just as in a real election, voting "none of the above" doesn't in any way impact who wins so it's not a choice that's included. I know some people think voting that "none of the above" makes some grand statement, but in reality it only makes the same statement as those who are too lazy to vote at all. And you simply hand your voting power over in greater measure to those who DO vote. Riiiight... because voting for two puppets put up by two parties that are running this country into the ground makes a much better "statement". Thanks for the gasoline... just put it with the rest of it. You are making two presuppositions that for the most part do not hold true. The first is that an individual's vote matters. In national elections, an individual's vote is practically meaningless. Unless you live in one of the 12 or so counties in the country that are truly close in presidential elections. Local elections, that's another matter. Maybe state elections your vote will have some sway. But given the rate of incumbency re-elections, probably not. The second is that the president has the power to make a big difference in a lot of things. This Freakonomics episode, talking to a number of economists, suggests otherwise. Yes, the president can pack the supreme court. But over time, most of the courts have ended up shifting mostly to the middle politically. He (and one day, she) can engage other countries - but any deals have to be agreed upon by congress. He can go to war - again, in most circumstances, the call would be the same no matter who is president (think entering WWII after Pearl Harbor, or war in Afghanistan after 9/11). I respect the office, and I think it is great that we have a system where our international representative gets switched up often. But I harbor few illusions that my personal vote matters to effect outcomes. |

You say a personal vote doesn't matter, and I feel that way sometimes, although I always vote. What if none of us did? |

You say a personal vote doesn't matter, and I feel that way sometimes, although I always vote. What if none of us did? But that isn't what actually happens. Even with the fairly low voter turnouts, an individual's vote in national elections rarely makes much difference (again, there are a few counties in the country where this is not going to be true). You might as well as what would happen if everyone who went to a restaurant ordered the same meal - wouldn't they run out of it. It doesn't happen. One of the Freakonomics books discusses this greater detail. |

Tony, first I want to thank you for spelling my name correctly. Well yes it is old but never the less the CPUSA has been a registered party since I think 1916. You make it sound like they are some foreign and radical fringe group, when in fact the majority of their goals and objectives are pretty much the same as President Obama's. One of the main principals of Communism is a strong central govt. and weak, little or no local government. Quite the opposite of what our founding fathers set up in the 1700s and warned us against. Which one does our current country look more like today? What has been the trend for the last 50 years, growing/bigger or shrinking Federal Govt.? |

Have you looked at the cpusa.org web site to compare what the CPUSA stand for and what their goals and objectives are? It isn't just this thread. You continue to belittle liberals/progressives with demeaning comments instead of commenting directly on the subject of the thread. It is a tired tactic and really does nothing for your argument about the topic. For me, it degrades when you might actually have thoughtful comments to make, which you do sometimes. You make me think. I don't always agree, but you make me think, and that is a good thing. But when you continue to make statements like that, it makes me less likely to take what you say seriously. So to take your question to its ridiculous extreme, you didn't answer my questions. What about those endorsements? |
