Route 102 is a mess when you are trying to train on it. The shoulder is not that great at all but it is a great spot on the course to know how to ride. As I have said before, no suicide missions here as it will come back to haunt you later in the race. The scary hill on the run course is not quite as scary as last year but make no mistake about it, it is steep and it sucks. The good part is there is a slight down hill for roughly 3/4 of a mile after the Power St hill.

I live about 10 minutes outside of Providence so I am going to zip in to registration first thing on Friday and take care of business. Have done it this way for the last 2 years and usually get in and out in 15 minutes.

I just signed up this morning. I have an 11 week break between two HIM this summer and I was about to go crazy if I didn't stick a race smack in the middle. Timing wise this works out perfectly as I have a scheduled rest week immediately following this race. Do the exact same volume on my own that weekend or do it in a well run race? hhhhmmmmm, tough choice! haha!

Fortunately this one is only 3 hours from me.

Have the waves been released yet or will that not appear until the athlete guide is released?  Judging by the bib numbers it appears I may be in the last wave (bib 1446, M24).  Boo.

Race numbers are posted at ironmanrhodeisalnd.com

No waves up yet, but you can roughly figure out the waves based on bib nubmers.  Looks pretty much the same as last year.

yeah, I'm on that website, but where to go once there.  I see "participants" but that doesn't have bib numbers.

Nevermind, IE 7 just formats the page ridiculously poorly...Gotta scroll over a ton to the right to see the info.

Wow...pretty nice PRO field there. I count three world champions (2 at Kona, 1 at Clearwater). Multiple 70.3 and full distance winners too. Should be a nice race to watch up front, especially when things get into Providence!

Aged up this year...got shuffled down a couple of waves. Too bad.

This is my first HIM, and I am getting pretty excited.

Does anyone know when the athlete guide will be published?

Terrenzo Bozzone (clearwater), Karen Smyers and Michellie Jones (Kona)...sweet! Add to the mix Ritchie Cunningham and Michael Lovato (if he recovers from IMCDA), Tim Berkel, you have a nice pro men's race.

I have a Q about the swim and tides. How placid is the water usually around 6 & 7 AM? What temp is it usually in July? Also, according to this:

http://ri.usharbors.com/tides/ri/julptj10.html

high tide is @ 7:57 AM, so that means the tide will be coming in while we swim. Does this make going out harder than coming in? Or do the conditions described above make this a non issue?

I ask because I am very unfamiliar with the beach and ocean swims in general. The only ocean swims I have done were in harbors. Thanks!

Short answer...it is called the Harbor of Refuge for a reason. It is quite calm in there (most of the time...not last year). If I was a betting man I would count on it being nice. 90 percent of the time it is like a mill pond that early in the AM. Currents are a non issue where we do the swim.

Just noticed the 2010 athlete guide was posted.  Question for people who may have done this in the past.  It says a limited number of Lake Placid spots are available and gives the time frame.  The time frame overlaps with gear pick-up times.  How likely is it that they stop signing people up for LP and cut it off?  Should I basically finish the race and wait in line for it to open?  It's kind of vague.

Also, weird that there is no explicit mention of the wave #s in it.  Maybe they will add that so it's official?

Reading all of this pick up drop off go here and there 3 bags, bring a pump but you can't bring a pump so you should borrow a pump stuff is sort of leaving me feeling like I'm not paying enough attention to all the little details going on with this race......

I've got somewhat of a technical question for those familiar with the bike course.  I run a compact crank and am debating between an 11-23 and 11-25 cassette.  Gut says 11-23.  I like to spin up hills (like to keep avg cadence mid 90's for a race), hence thinking about the 11-25, however in the flats I've noticed I sometimes have a hard time finding the right gear with it due to the extra 2 tooth jump it has.  Thoughts?

I'm running a 50/34 up front with an 11/23 for this.  Haven't ridden the course but from the profile and what I hear I don't think I will even be using the 34/23 combo during the race....I doubt you would need the 25 as much as you'd want the other gears.  I heard there's one short steep one that you can basically just hop up out of the saddle and burst over.....

I'll wait to hear what others say...

thats what i figured, 50/34 and an 11-23 is almost exactly the same range as the standard 53/39 and 12-25 (well, just a smidge wider) and I rode that for a long time with no problem except in the hilly areas.  This doesn't seem "hilly" though.  Just though maybe there was a killer steep hill or something where it may justify it.

thanks.

A favor, please?  Can you explain this jargon to a bike newb.  I spend an awful lot of time with my in the saddle, but there's still a lot I don't know.  What is 50/34, 11/23, etc...  Thanks!
