I'm riding a road bike and most of my long rides are in bike shorts and the short rides are with tri shorts. This is how I've trained, so do I stick with it it or risk a sore A$$ on the run? |

Could you put bike shorts over tri shorts at T1 and then take off at T2? Doesn't work for Bib but would be fine for plain shorts. I use that config for my longer trainer sessions since lack of movement in the saddle vs. outdoor rides. |

I had about 25mins between start time for run though I am also running Superseal OLY next weekend as a trial run and make sure I have my game plan down(hopefully) |

Gives a good idea of what to expect. And the worst part for me is always the 5 mile false flat section between the left at the bottom after the first climb and the start of the next climb. Always a mind F! |

My thoughts based on that and this video...first hill just get over don't worry about watts since you will either blow thru target or fall over going to slow. Ride conservative after the first climb, since those rollers are more uphill than down or as you put it a mind F. Stay in control on second climb since it's a bit longer but get aggressive with the rollers after since they are mostly downhill and watch out for speed zone. The 3rd climb is a double peak so keep as much speed as possible into the second part. Enjoy the long downhill after the climb and then get as aero as possible the last part back into the wind. Does that seem like the right way to ride it? also, the next video up on YouTube was the whole course with map, elevation, speed, watts HR overlayed. Pretty cool. With the right gearing I'm hoping it's not too hard to stay within power on the first hill (haven't done oceanside with a PM yet), but I know with a compact and the right cassette the climb is a non issue. I have always had a hard time categorizing climbs 2 and 3 as climbs. They're pretty insignificant, but if the wind is in our faces, as it can be, it's more about where they come and if you burned too many matches up to then. But except for the last couple miles, the climbing is all done by mile 42 ish, and yes, it's a fast section from the 3d climb to the right turn on Vandegrift. Lots of people are toast by then, and no longer even in aero, but you can make up a lot of time if you've ridden smartly to that point. The three key areas for me are the concrete runway on the frontside, also a false flat and often with headwind, the section between climb 1 and 2 mentioned, and the run back to town into the usual headwind on Vandegrift. Note there is also a little bit of a climb back up to the commissary and then over the bridge in the last 4 miles. I saw that other video as well but didn't have a half hour To add.... The front side is also easier than the back and there are places to hammer, but it's not flat either. There's probably a good 3-4 times you'll be getting out of aero to spin a bit. |

My fracture has healed but the joints are still healing. I hopped on the bike trainer yesterday for an easy spin and the area hurt every now and then. I think it's safe for me to start swimming again which I'll do tonight or tomorrow night. I can start wearing regular shoes next week so I'm gonna start doing some 30 minute walks to get the foot and toes mobile again. As for the race, I think I can make it. If I do, I'm gonna have a super long half marathon filled with lotsa walking and very little running. |

I may be wrong but I don't believe it's that steep, probably maxes out at 5% or so. The 3 climbs for this course are not very long but do have some pretty steep portions. The first is only a little more than .5 mile but averages 12% and has a 20%+ section. The others are a less steep but have some sections above 10%. If you have worked on hills you'll still be ok. Just don't burn too many matches. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California Oceanside : Official Thread 2016 Rode the frontside Sunday (and then some hills into San Clemente, Damn they have some STEEP hills there!!!), then ran past the pier and back Road is in pretty good shape. First part of Vandegrift and then a bit on Stuart Mesa has new slurry but it's not real smooth. Shouldn't be knocking bottle out but it'll rattle you a bit. One reminder or heads up for people that haven't done it, that right hand turn onto the bike path after exiting the Pulgas gate (about 15 miles in?) is way sharper than 90 degrees, so be ready for it. as I recall that's the first aid station too so it's kind of a cluster anyway. Also lots of dirt in and after the tunnel Also reminded of how many people say the first 25 is "pancake flat" but there's a lot of places to get in trouble if you push too hard. It's a net elev. gain and usually into a headwind. And the ramp to the pier is steeper than ever on the run!

I will go into the race without running for 8+ weeks due to a deep calf strain. combine that with having a 1 yr old, training has been a challenge! Anyhow, my wife is also racing this year and she rides 650 wheels, anyone know where she can still rent race wheels? I checked out the site that sponsors the race and they are mad expensive for a 70.3 rental. we didn't know if there was anyone else around to rent from. |
