Ironman Boulder : Official Thread (Page 2)

Okay, I'm on the other side of the world and always out of the loop....how fast did it sell out?  I'm assuming it sold out....

I went to the Ironman Boulder website today and clicked on the Registration button, looks like it hasn't sold out. Which is surprising to me.

This morning I got the "Hurry up...there are only a few spots left" email. I guess it's getting close to selling out.

I am in!!! This will be my 6th IM (FL, AZ, LP, SG, Kona). I have gained a lot of weight after last October (30lbs) and really need to get to work on a solid base. I have a few marathons later this year and Galveston 70.3 next year. Lots of friends will also be racing so it is going to be a lot of fun. I really like to do inaugural races (AZ, SG) and this will be my 3rd one. I hope everyone has a great year of training. This is going to be one of the great IM races and future races will be very difficult to get into.

No signing up for me for 2014....definitely considering for '15 though.

I signed up for the series. I think I'm still in denial that I actually did it...this will be my first full, although I've done the Boulder 70.3 twice. In fact, one of the things that put me over the top to sign up was knowing that the run course was completely different, lol! I'm completely terrified, but I couldn't pass up all the money I'll save by doing a local IM!

I'm volunteering at Boulder 70.3 on next Sunday. I moved here to late to sign up. At least I'll be inside "the ropes"

According to FB, the race is now sold out! Foundation spots still available, of course.

Less than ONE year to IM Boulder!!!!! Lots of base miles to put in between now and January!!

One year from Arizona, I had bilateral knee pain that I never did shake completely.  One year from Boulder, I am relatively pain free.  I hope this is a good omen!

Anyone from Boulder know the water temp that time of year. Wetsuit or swimskin?

I've done the 70.3 that same weekend the last two years and it has been wetsuit legal. I used a full a year ago and got really hot and just used a sleeveless this year and it was great. So I am assuming it will be wetsuit legal next year.

How technical is the bike course? Are there any high speed downhill sections that I/we should be concearned about. I've looked at about half the course with google street view and it doesn't look too bad so far.

Any areas to note?

I'd put my bike handling skills at above average for triathletes lol.

The only part you need to worry about is coming back down from Carter Lake. There's some nice fast twisty downhill sections that makes my cycling friend nervous (I thought it was fine). Everything else is wide open. I'd worry more about the heat and wind.

How's the hotel reservation thing going for people? We live in Highlands Ranch but looking for a place the night before and after. Not having much luck.

I live in Houston, TX. Do you have any tips on what I can do to train between now and IMBoulder? I have three 70.3 events leading up to it (Oilman, NOLA, and Buffalo Springs), the Houston marathon, and a few half marathons.

Hi calimechengr - I used to live in Houston and moved to CO in 2011. I'm flying down for Oilman and am SUPER excited to crush that course with all of my extra red blood cells

My recommendations is to ride hills, hills, and more hills. Ride Chappel Hill as much as possible, try to go to Austin and do some longer sustained climbs. Spend a weekend in Fredricksburg riding the hills out there. Spend time on the trainer doing some strength intervals too. Ride more than you think you need to, just to get that bike fitness locked in.

The run is pretty flat, so I'd think just running around town would be fine (Buffalo Bayou, Hershey Park).

What are your thoughts on cassettes?  I'm in an 11-23 that I know I need to change (I don't have a compact either).  I think I need to get at least a 12-25...

I looked at it a little bit, but I'm looking for campgrounds.

I guess my biggest question would be if the roads will be closed during the bike?

I found a campground on the bike course, but don't want my family getting trapped in for the day.

I guess it being a Sunday, and campers normally checking out that day, they should be able to get out somehow right?
