I'm glad to see I wasn't disappointed by the predictability of the CoJ pundits. Ya but we also had a brilliant reference to "Speed Brazilian'ing". Does that make up for it? |

Agreed! |

If it were Bush, people would have commented as well. It's life, accept it... I am actually curious why we were the 1st ones out? Anyone have any really good idea why? (Aside from the JC theory ) I have a few ideas... none of them backed with facts of course 1. The 75% disapproval rating for the olympics among Chicagoans was fairly well publicized. Who wants to vote to send the olympics somewhere where the people don't want it. 2. I have heard some reports that some within the IOC were offended by Obama treating it like a business meeting, just dropping in and then taking off, not even bothering to stick around for the result. Again, no hard facts on this one, so take it for what its worth. |

Member 1699 | Subject: RE: Chicago Eliminated from 2016 Olympics I opposed the Olympics, mostly because I find it incredible that a city, county and state that can barely balance their own budgets while slashing services think it is a good idea to spend billions on an event that will likely lose hundreds of millions of dollars. I believe the motivating factor was as much corruption as civic pride. The price gouging and skimming of contracts would have been epic in one of the most corrupt cities in the nation. I don't know if Rio will be any better, but if it is just as bad, then I won't be on the hook for it with even higher taxes. |

Not that there isn't crime in Rio/Tokyo/wherever, but that was utterly brutal Yeah...because the crime in Rio is so moderate... From the AP A police shootout with criminals stopped a commuter train and sent passengers fleeing for cover. Officers conducted a drug raid on a slum, keeping 2,000 children out of school. Police got into gun battles that killed more than a dozen suspected traffickers. All this happened in early September, during the same week that the International Olympic Committee released a report giving generally high praise to Rio's bid for the 2016 Games. It was hardly an unusual week in this city of 6 million, where major highways -- including one that links the international airport to key tourism beaches -- are periodically shut down by shootouts.

My dad's been to Rio a few times. He said there's 1 tourist area with a bunch of hotels and clubs and then there's the rest that is apparently horrible. They'll probably have a line to tell people "you are now leaving the safe zone...Go with God." |

Rio really has the most compelling argument--no Olympics ever held in South America. They sound like the front-runner. Madrid's a tough sell because by 2016, there will have been several in a row in Europe (three I think). And how much fun would the Olympics be in Rio?! Par-tay! Just be sure to dodge the fire from the gang warfare that is going on as you're getting from one venue to the next. You talking Chicago or Rio? You could say the same about both. Golf clap. Why a golf clap? Seriously, it's horrible in both places. |

If it were Bush, people would have commented as well. It's life, accept it... I am actually curious why we were the 1st ones out? Anyone have any really good idea why? (Aside from the JC theory ) This might be a reason Link However, the triumphant Chicago presentation--the culmination of a $48 million package--had cold water thrown onto it when Pakistani IOC member Syed Shahid Ali correctly noted the significant difficulties facing foreigners seeking entry into the United States. Obama failed to address Ali's concerns, saying only that hosting the Games in Chicago would be "a reminder that America at its best is open to the world." America's visa processing issues have been well-publicized throughout much of the world, with some tourists waiting six months or more to have a 10 minute appointment with a visa examiner in an embassy or consulate to visit America on a vacation. Business visas or those for cultural ambassadors, like artists and athletes, are similarly problematic. Many applicants complain that the system is opaque at best and a crap shoot at worst, with few guidelines provided for applicants and rejections issued pro forma. |

"They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago," Bush said. He added, "This country supports your bid, strongly." |

The meeting that you link to was him meeting with the Chicago bid commitee and the comments weren't picked up by national media. |

Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: Chicago Eliminated from 2016 Olympics I think the whole issue I have with Obama making an appearance at the IOC is this: The Presidency is a significant position and the President's time should be used like calling-in your boss to get something done when you're running into a wall. Obama on the other hand seems to think he needs to spread his presence around the whole word. He's been on television more than new episodes of The Office and he's over-exposing his position. The President showing-up used to mean something. Now it just means he's bored and wants to appear. George W Bush did appear at schools, functions, etc, but he wasn't on the air every single week. Barrack comes-across as liking to see himself on television...what's the word for that??? |
