My max was 18 (not very good). I will make my goal 2000 for the month.

I like drodgers idea:

How about this?  Assign equal weight to:

1. total pushups in max set (i.e. how many you can do in a row before falling on your face),

2. percentage improvement in a max set (e.g. 10 to 20 = 100 percent improvement), and

3. total number of pushups done in the month.

For example, assume there are 10 of us.  The person who makes the most percentage improvement gets a 10, least gets a 1.  Same scoring for max number in a set and total pushups during the month.  If you're tops in all three, you get a 30.  But, I can't see that happening as someone with a big jump in percentage probably started low and won't be able to do the most out of the group and vice versa.

But with one exception:  To help level the playing field, I think #3 should be percent completed against your goal instead of total.

I can set up a spreadsheet with whatever everyone likes as the scoring system.

I rattled off 33 this morning in one set, so that will be my starting point, with a goal of 2000 for the month.

I think that's a great idea.  I'm a huge fan of pushups, especially knuckle pushups (you get more range of motion, and it's good for your supportive muscles in your forearms, plus normal ones aggravate my wrists).  I'm totally in on this challenge, but just because I don't want to have a crazy advantage, I am going to share the ultimate pushup routine to help improve your max.

It's called the Russian Military Pushup Experiment.  And it friggin works!

WEEK 1

Mon: 100% test, relative intensity (RI) 30% Set frequency (SF) 60 min
Tues: RI 50% SF 60 min
Wed: RI 60% SF 45 min
Thurs: RI 25% SF 60 min
Fri: RI 45% SF 30 min
Sat: RI 40% SF 60 min
Sun: RI 20% SF 90 min

WEEK 2

Mon: 100% test RI 35% SF 45min
Tues: RI 55% SF 20 min
Wed: RI 30% SF 15 min
Thurs: RI 65% SF 60min
Fri: RI 35% SF 45 min
Sat: RI 45% SF 60 min
Sun: RI 25% SF120 min

So, If I max 70 right now, my first day would look like this:

100% test = 70.  30% of 70 = 21.  I'd do 21 pushups every 60 minutes of the day.  Assuming I'm up 16 hours of the day, I'd do 336 pushups that day.  That doesn't seem so bad, right?  well wait till Friday, when I do 45% (32) every 30 minutes!  That would come out to 1024 pushups that day.  I've done this program twice.  My first time was at an original max of 30 pushups before I lose form.  By the way, when you're training, that's when you stop doing them -- when you lose form.  If you choose to follow this program, just listen to your body.   That's the number 1 rule.  If you're getting sore to the point it's uncomfortable or painful, STOP!  Never do more than it says, and if you miss a set, don't worry about it.  It's easy to lose track, especially when you're busy.  I'm not too shy about it, so I do it at work, the store, the sidewalk, whatever.  If you miss it often, just drop and do a few whenever you realize it's a good time.  Even if it's not close to your max, just pump out a few as often as possible.  The optimal amount and frequency would be to follow the program though.  My max is 70 now, so I'll be shooting for 100.  It's kind of a stretch, but it would be nice.

Anyway, I'll quit blabbing, but I'm really excited about this challenge!  Good luck everybody!

Edit...  I just crunched the numbers, and it's going to look like this:

Week 1 - 3622 (based on 70 rep max)
Week 2 - 6373 (based on 80 rep max, assuming my max goes up by 10 after the first week)

Grand total = 9995 in two weeks.  Now, I'm sure I'll miss some here and there, and I'll probably be too sore at some points, so I'll be shooting for 10000 for the whole month.  It sounds like a lot, but when you do a little at a time at a very high frequency, it's not as much as it seems, and it works great.  I really can't say enough good about the program.  Ok, now I'm really done.

I agree -- changing #3 to total against overall goal would make a more level playing field.  If willie05 will do a spreadsheet, that's great, no matter what the system.

By the way, although I don't recall drinking anything, I must have been drunk last night because I entered this and the president's cup challenge.  This is my third month of training and for president's cup, I just decided to double my April totals for s/b/r.  Oh well, no backing out now.  I just glad nobody proposed a fight-to-the-death martial arts battle royale because I'd have probably jumped on that too.

Max of 37 pushups and my goal for May is 2000.  Good luck everybody!

Sorry to double post, but the last one was kinda long.  What do you think about a point system such as this :

Parameters are as mentioned in drodger's previous post

1. Highest pushup max

2. Highest percentage improvement

3. Total amount of pushups in the month

Now, say we have 20 participants, there will be a possility of 20 points per parameter.  The winner of parameter 1 will earn 20 points. Second place will get 19, and so on.  Same goes for the other parameters.  The one with the highest max may not have the best improvement, so they might have a score such as the following:

1. 20 pts      2. 5pts      3. 8pts = 33 pts total.   (Example)

Someone who starts with a very low max may improve greatly, and they are likely to earn points like this:

1. 12pts      2. 20pts     3. 10pts = 42pts total.

I don't know.  It's just an idea.  This is kind of a hard thing to score.

Pfft... Sorry, I think I just restated exactly what Willie just said about the scoring.  Sorry, It's almost 5am so I'm kind of a space cadet at the moment.

"Maxxed out" at 30, last night, but I'm hoping that isn't my true max. I'm fighting off a cold, and did sprint workout in the evening. Are those good enough excuses?

I'd rather not have to admit to being a wimp.

Ok.  I did 14--pretty sad. And I'm out of fricken breath.  :-(   I will build to 30 this month.  2500 sounds like a ton--especially as I'm going to skip a bunch of days before my race this weekend.

I promise you Fred, it is quite awesome.  I can't take the credit for it though.  I found it on MMAForum, and I wanted to share it with you guys.  Triathlons are a new realm to me, and I'm excited to really get into it.  However, strength training and MMA are other passions of mine, so a pushup challenge is very exciting to me.  Everybody here at BT has been awesome and have helped me immensely, so this is my chance to help, even if it's just pushups.  This program takes some dedication to follow to the "T" but even if you hit half of what it says, it will work wonders.

This is definitely not the final list, but I'm posting now because a few haven't posted monthly goals, and I wanted to be sure I was caught up with everyone.

Let me know if I'm missing any of your info, and if you have a blank beside your name, please post your goal for the month, or current max in a set.

To be sure we get as many as possible, we can take new entries through Sunday, 5/4.  (I'll be out camping over the weekend, so I won't do any updates from Friday afternoon until Monday morning).

As of now for scoring I'm going to rank everyone with points for these 3 categories:

1) Max pushups in 1 set

2) % improvement of max pushups in 1 set

3) % of Monthly goal attainment

Feel free to make any other suggestions - and good luck! Smile

I'll sign up, if it's not too late--how does 35 first max and 7000 for the month sound? (I just locked myself in the bathroom at work and managed 35 without passing out.) I like the intense workout plan, but haven't yet calculated how many total pushups that would entail, so I may raise my goal once I do (I also may decide to give up the workout, once I realize how freaking hard it is. )
