Jeezus, if a bunch of adults can't figure out the correct answer, how the hell is a 7-year old?!?!?

It's much harder than the chair equation.

I came up with two answers.

6 - if the spider can only move up and across (meaning to the right only)
9 - if the spicer can only move up and across (meaning able to go both right and left)

I guess I need a little more information on the definition of "across".

We were all set at 9 until someone threw 10 in   Just because we are all adults does not mean we all think alike

This reminds me of this game thing that the jack-a$$ owner of the last company I worked for gave me. It was a drawing of some squares and you had to say how many squares there were in it. And apparently, the answer wasn't as easy as it sounded. Whatever it was, I got the right answer - I looked it up online later and confirmed this, as he started it by saying "no one ever gets this right" and then wouldn't tell me if I was wrong or right...I think he was just p*ssed that I got it right

Is that why he is a former boss?   That is a great story!

A lot of reasons why - it was a horrible place to work. Which sucked, cuz I actually liked the job. If only I could take THAT job with the majority of the people I work with now...I think he just never actually hired anyone who got it right - I'm sure there are others in the world who have. D-bag.

I retract my answer.  He can only do 10 if he can go down.  Which he can't.

If the spider can go down there is a lot more than 10 by the way.

Ah-ha - the number example is what I needed!  Thank you!  Except I still don't want to tell my daughter (even though half the parents do!) because this particular homework is supposed to show their own thinking.  I just checked and she got 7.

Here are some of the other questions...

 - I am thinking of 2 numbers.  The sum is 17.  One number is 5 more than the other.  What are the two numbers?

 - The letters A,B,C and D each stand for a different single digit.  Use the clues to find the digits.

Clues:  C is greater than 1

            C is an odd number

            B & D are even numbers

What number does D stand for?

                                     C A

                                +   C B

                                 _____

                                    D  C

I've got a daughter in grade 2 - and those seem like really hard questions!! Mind you my daughter's program is 'watered down' somewhat because she is struggling in math but I still don't think the regular class is doing questions like that - I don't even find them easy!

That one's easy to setup:

X + (x+5)=17
2x=12
x=6

Why did my whole thread just disappear when I hit the TAB key?

Anyway, I need help on this problem.  I'm not giving my daughter the answer, I'm just curious if I'm even thinking about it right.  Scary since I was a second grade teacher!

Charley the spider (S) can only move up or across ot get the fly (F).  How many paths altogether are there for Charley to get his meal?

O     O     F

O     O    O

S     O     O

I'm not sure if I'm putting too much thought into it by letting the spider take less direct routes?  What do you guys think?

I say 0, because the spider and fly are both killed by flyswatter before the spider has a chance to move.

I just gotta say... that's some seriously tough math for second graders!

My second grader's math homework tonight was along the lines of:

"Fill in the proper sign (>, <, or =)

1. 27____ 54

2. 65 ____ 18

3. 79 ____ 79

and....

Make up your own problems:

_____ > ______

_____ < ______
