Mesa | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread Good news everyone... I did a big training day... ok a race... a.k.a. Full Vineman... and had good weather. First IM that I have had good weather at in 6 races. So either the curse of me bringing bad weather along to races has been lifted... or it was just a flub up and we'll get nice squirrely weather again at Silverman. Great to see you are back at it Vegas99.... and welcome to the board my kiwi friend. |

Folsom, CA (Sacramento Area) | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread Hey All, I have been waiting for this race since last september. I registered last year for the 2008 race and then missed it due to several injuries. I am signed up for this year am I am trying to stay heatlhy, so hopefully I will see you all. This will be my first HIM. I am where I need to be on the swim and the bike but I still have some work to do on the run. I have the flight booked but do you locals have any suggestions for a good, cheap hotel that my wife might approve of? I found some cheap rates at "La Fiesta" but I am affraid might be too cheap (the reviews don't sound too goo). My wife is going with me so I want to keep her happy Thanks Mauricio |

The rooms though are nearly the same... just the casino area is nicer. |

It is literally "in" the run course! Great, clean and nice place. Mesa | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread devouahy - 2009-01-08 7:43 AM I do not want to repeat last years swim course! Please pray for good karma this year, and it will be flat and smooth on the water. You know Hans... I finally got nice weather at an IM at Vineman this year. Maybe I can get a streak going? |

Ventura, CA | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread Did the half Silverman last year and it was the BEST experience & best run race I've ever done, best vibe, best swag.... So I just completed the Vineman under 12hrs as my first full a few weeks ago and biked in the hills here this weekend to see how fatigued I would be... so far nothing I can't overcome by November I believe (tendonitis in hip, funny gritty sounds in the left knee... nothing major   So I'm cautiously optimistic about being able to pull this off... What I think I am saying is that I'm IN! |

Pulled bike out in morning because of illness and weather. June 2009 - Drove to CDA to do first IM...1hour 17min swim, 6hour 47min bike, 2hour 10min 1/2 marathon...got hypothermia (9 degrees C and raining). DNF (N.B. Other than bone piercing cold and finger blanching, I felt athletically good) August 2009 - IM Calgary 70.3 - 5:58:22 finish. Sooo...I've signed up for Silverman Full simply to finish. Do I have a chance? Nav |

Folsom, CA (Sacramento Area) | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread What about the water temp? Is a wet suit a must or just nice to have. I think I can handle 69-70 degrees and up and I feel better with out a wetsuit I know last year the weather was bad, what about historically? what are the typical temps, wind, etc |

Ventura, CA | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread I would say a wetsuit is not a MUST. I was cold outside of the water last year, but comfortably warm once in, and I was wearing a sleeveless suit. It all depends on how coldblooded you are I guess. And SoCal is slowly turning me into a wuss.....So I'll be wearing a suit this year....maybe even full sleeves brrrrr! |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread I would wear a full suit if just for speed. I just got done racing Lake Stevens and the official water temp was 69.5°. Everyone I saw was wearing a wetsuit. I would think that the added buoyancy will help the swim time - especially in a fresh water race. |

Folsom, CA (Sacramento Area) | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread Actually, wetsuits donot help my average time that much. I usually average 1:30 / 100 no matter what. The couple of things i have against wetsuits is chafing aound the neck (usually th eproblem is the next day not during the race), lowere back pain, time to put it on / take it off. I used a full wetsuit last year for alcatraz with about 60 degree water temp and I actually started to overheat after about 30 minutes. I had to stop and let water in thru the neck to cool myself down. If I can, I will probably go with out. Is there time to get on the lake prior to the event day? what about time to warm up the morning of the event? |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Silverman - Full Ironman : Official Thread How about fresh water vs. salt water. I was surprised at the difference in race times between the different locations. Perhaps it was just a variance in course length, but I was just wondering if anyone could chime in on salt vs. fresh water swim times. The times at Lake Stevens looked to be about 10% slower than Oceanside? |

The times at Lake Stevens looked to be about 10% slower than Oceanside? That is correct, salt water swims will always be faster than fresh water. Salt water has a higher buoyancy ratio than salt water, and if you went to the dead sea's, you can actually go lay in the water without a wetsuit, and float on the water. But for your question, that is correct. Salt water times will be faster. If you look at swimming pools, the fastest swimming pools in the world all use salt water, and not fresh water. If you asked about a speed factor, I cannot recall what that is. Good luck at Silverman!! |

Is there time to get on the lake prior to the event day? what about time to warm up the morning of the event? Yes, you can get in the water to warm up before the race if needed. This is a mass start swim for both the full and the half. We usually allow people to get in the water an warm up up to 30minutes before their race. REMINDER to ALL: There is no previous days swimming into Hemingway Harbor. You will have to travel up to boulder beach to train / get used to the water. If you are caught swimming at the boat ramp, you will be disqualified. I do not want to receive a call from the Hemingway Harbor personel. We are the only race in Nevada that has been allowed to have access to that beautiful launch ramp, and do not want to lose access either. Thank You. |
