Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread My ipod case broke last year so I havent run with music since then and haven't missed it since. Yeah I am with you wurkit one thing with MCM is I have run most of the route, some parts of it many, many times. Still should be fun. Only a couple more weeks until my 16 week plan starts. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread People wear them even when the rules say "No." I think they (IPods or people that need to use them in a race, you choose) are stupid, but that is just my strong aversion to running with music. MCM will be my 11th marathon attempt (with the 10th being Baltimore 2 weeks before - also my 6th time participating in that race). I'm not yet sure if I am going to make Baltimore or MCM the "priority" race. Right now I'm leaning towards MCM. If so, then I'll try to be in some sort of shape to run a BQ type time. If not then maybe I'll just pace Traci in her attempt! |

Master 1678 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread ^^^ That would be pretty awesome if you paced me! One vote for Baltimore as your priority race. The MCM course is crowded and there are several wheelchair athletes that are trying to make their way through the crowd as well. You really need to pay attention to what's going on around you. Not saying that all people who use iPods fail to pay attention, but I saw on more than one occasion last year, someone listening to their music (and some cell phone talkers.. grrr!!,) in their own world, not hearing the rest of us yelling out "wheelchair!" I didn't use an iPod last year and won't use one this year either. The course has a lot of spectators for most of it except for the part on 395 coming back into Crystal City. Not many around Haines Point, but that's about halfway and, if you're already mentally struggling at that point, it's going to be a long day. 395 kind of sucks. It's around mile 20 and it's tough. Hardly spectators out there, a lot of people walking, and definitely the lowest part of my race last year. Just remember though, once you make it through that part, you're going into Crystal City. People line both sides of the street and it's incredible. |

Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread I am a no music person in races and long runs. I'll occasionally use my iPod on shorter tempo runs to kick up the fun. I found it a bit easy for me to get hooked on having the music, so I decided just to do most of my runs without music and appreciate the au natural feeling of running. |

Member 32 | Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread of the 20,000 plus that actually show and run for the MCM in october, at least 15 - 20% will have headphones. its too chatic in the first 10 miles to wear them (IMO) but they come in handy after leaving haines point and heading across the bridge (cause you'll be hurting)...LOL. i never wear headphones in races except for marathons. 4:30 is along time to listen to your brain fight with your body. the organizers don't say anything to anyone. unless your finishing under 2:30, the rules don't really pertain to you. |

Bullsh-t. Flat out, no questions. I don't want this to turn into a debate on ethics and race procedures, but if this is how you feel, then you shouldn't be racing. Rules are in place for the safety of everyone, not just the elites. It just so happens that in this case, the allowing of music players has been left to the discretion of the RD's because the USATF caved in to whiney people. I can't wait for them to have a backbone and change it back after someone gets hurt because some idiot was wearing them in a race. The 65 year old guy who runs a 4:30 and is in contention for an AG placing certainly is competing in the race and going as hard as he can for the distance. I don't think he needs distraction to finish. |

Regular 477 Washington, DC | Subject: RE: Marine Corps Marathon : Official Thread This will be my first full marathon. I live about two miles from Rosslyn (in West End) and will have my parents and a few of their friends in town, so I'm thinking abut hobbling across Key Bridge and stopping for food in Georgetown rather than brave the Metro lines. I'm guessing the walking will be good for me. |

If it did end near key bridge that would work for me becaue I am right there also. |

yes and... ...walk there. It's not far. I actually walked to the Clarendon/Courthouse metro stop because the Rosslyn stop had too long of a line. Look at the google map of Rosslyn. The circle street/Iwo Jima memorial is where the finish area is. Decide where you go from there. Also, you have 4 months to worry about this. |

What I'll probably do is throw it in my pocket and if I need it then I'll use it, but if not, no biggie, it's not like it weighs very much anyway. Agreed, I'm hoping for some nice pace booty. Speaking of pace, are you signing up for a pace team? Not sure yet - have to see what happens with training. My goal is go under 5-hours. But not sure how I'm gonna pace it yet, except starting a little on the slow side so I don't go out too fast and blow up. I like the idea of a pace team, but it'll depend on where my training is at and what pace the teams are on. I met up with the pace team the morning of the race. Didn't have to sign up in advance. They will tell you the pace ahead of time. Some of them run/walk, others just run. |
