My dad had a stroke 12 years ago, and a few of his friends have had them as well. My dad is almost fully recovered, except for aphasia (speech problems). He has a friend that recovered fully in a few months and another that didn't do well. It seems like that got your father into treatment quickly, which I understand is key.

It helped me to read up on the various possibilities. I feel for you, especially being out of the area.

I don't know how technically savvy your mother is, but one idea is to update people via email instead of phone. While my dad was in the hospital, my mom would spend 12 hours there, come home and be on the phone for four hours. It was somewhat helpful to talk, but draining as well. My dad had an unrelated heart attack years later, and she used email instead. That seemed to help.
