Member![]() | ![]() My older sister got me into triathlons with baby steps. We started with small races, 5ks and 4.4 milers and built up to a marathon. We liked the time we got to spend together training and recovering that when the season ended we flipped through the local race reports and started planning some tris. I used to just lift at the gym but figured there is no point in getting huge if you're not going to use it. Still lift throughout the week but focus on higher reps after spin classes and runs. I also like the lifestyle and friendly people. During the race there's lots of competition but after I chat with the guys in my age group for tips and they don't mind hanging around to help. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was a runner and my wife talked me into doing a tri with her. Since I'd been a swimmer in HS...many, many, years ago...it seemed like a reasonable idea. Except there's that whole "cycling" thing to contend with... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was sick of just racing bicycles and my wife and some of her friends signed up for a tri last year. My wife and I got pregnant (yes, we were trying) and the doctors told her she should not do the race after some complications early on so we went and watched. After watching I said I can do this. Now that Noah is in the world my wife is starting to train again and I have my first race in 12 days. I find the training less time consuming than bike racing too. I have certain expectation racing a bike, but I am back to beginner status doing the tri thing so no pressure or expectations except to have fun and stay active. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Driving down the highway in April, 2007 with my sweetheart. We start meeting hordes of bicycles headed the other way. She asked what they were doing and I told her it was the peaks to prairie triathlon. She asked why didn't we try that and I innocently said "I don't know, why don't we". A week later she presented me with a training schedule she had made up from info on the internet. By August she had us seeing trainers who set us up on a new schedule and diet, we trained 6 days a week through the winter and did the race in April 2008. She placed second in her age group and second overall for women soloists. I was right in the middle of the pack. I continued running that year, a half and full marathon, then did peaks to prairie again this year. Since peaks is run, bike paddle, decided to do a "real triathlon" next. Now am taking swimming lessons, training for a marathon, doing a half iron distance race next year and a full in 2011. Now whenever she mentions trying something new I think very carefully before answering. |

Doing bodybuilding competitions sucked. Being 10% body fat made me the worst athlete every. I got winded taking a flight of stairs. I had a real hard time calling it a "sport". Tris, on the other hand are a great measure of athleticism. It's not easy to be competitive at a sport that requires skill and dedication in three disciplines. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally it was for the challenge and to find a "hobby" that required fitness. Now it's just what I do *shrug* Although, I do agree with Daremo. If I'm not a great runner, biker, or swimmer...but "ok" at all of them I may be a good triathlete. Still working on becoming "ok" at all of them |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Kiwanis club volunteers at the local triathlon every year, some members are race organizors. Two years ago I helped, watched and said "I can do this too" & "I want to do this too" So last year, I did it and was hooked like so many. All my life I have enjoyed being on a bike. I was only riding my MTB at the time and hadnt been on a road bike in years (I hate having to share the road w/ cars lol) But when I saw the tribikes, I wanted one. They looked fast and I missed going fast on a bike. I had also been trying to get into running but couldnt really find the motivation to run consistently. And I always enjoyed swimming (never done it competitively though) and being in the water so it seemed that triathlons were a good and logical fit for me to keep in shape for my real passion - snowboarding. Some other reasons: - It's an individual sport. No one else can be the weak link. Its all on me to succeed. - Training is flexible, I can do it on my time, when I want. ie. I'm not tied down to Bball league - It's diverse. I'm not doing just one 'sport' all the time. - and the people doing it are the nicest and friendliest competitors I have ever met. When I did my first race, I truly believed that people really were wishing me the best of luck and meaning it. Edited by ratherbesnowboarding 2009-07-01 12:14 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife told me "your are getting fat" My daughter was doing tri's after retiring from swimming so I had to cart her to the races anyway. Still remember my first run, about 1k, it was torture, now 10k is just another run |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always watched triathlon coverage on TV as a kid on Wide World of Sports and thought it looked really cool. The problem? I never really learned to swim! I started running in '01, but still had triathlons in the back of my mind. I enjoy running, because I love to challenge myself and it has definitely been a challenge. But, I am ready for more and decided this year would be my year to try a tri! I'm so glad I did, because I am enjoying the challenge. My swimming still pretty much sucks, but I'm getting better. And, I love working to overcome my fear of the OWS! I re-discoverd my love for the bike and just love the variety of the training. I am not looking forward to the off-season! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've run since high school, swam in the ocean since I was a kid, and biked for about the last 15 years. But I never put it all together. About 5 years ago I started to have some problems with my heart. The long and short of it is that I ended up with a pacemaker. About 6 months after I got the pacemaker a group of women at work decided to do one of the local sprint tris. They ended up talking me into joining them. I spent a TON of time getting back into shape for this little sprint. I'd been unable to exercise for almost a year. Well, I came in 3rd for my AG, and, as many others have said, I was hooked. I've done 3 sprints and 3 olys. This year I'm aiming for a HIM (because a half Iron at half a century - 50 years old- sounds cool). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GrilloOriginal - 2009-06-30 5:12 PM I am goal oriented in life so this sort of sport suits me well since I always have a tangible goal I'm working towards. I initially tried just running but I tend to do something every day or not at all when it comes to physical activities, so having built in cross training keeps me from hurting myself and keeps me excited for each workout. I run Monday, then by Tuesday it's been so long (2 days) since I've been on the bike or in the pool that I'm excited to do that, then on Wednesday it's been so long since I've run I get excited again... I'm a little ADD like that. An added side benefit that keeps me happy is the community (yeah BT!) that's so friendly and accepting of novices. That's key for me too. ^x2. All of this exactly. |

Coach ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() honestly because I knew nothing about triathlon, because it sounded challenging, beause I wanted to exercise again and most importantly because it sounded bad azz! (yup that's about it...) |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Because I was trying to think of a goal that would shock the heck out of myself. A goal that the thought of achieving it got me so excited b/c I literally could barely imagine it. And triathlons fit that description. I had never ran over a mile before. And my last bike was when I was 8 and was a banana seat & streamers. Was way way way out of my comfort zone to attempt a tri. So there it was. |

![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd seen it on tv and thought it looked like fun... except for the running. Running and I have never gotten along. So when I started getting the urge to run back in Nov. and was actually able to do it, I thought "hey, maybe I can do that whacky triathlon stuff after all."So I signed up for a race and start training and got hooked. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was camping at a recreation area that sponsored a "Tin Man" race every labor day week end. Each year may family and I would watch in amazement and cheer people on that we did not even know. Later that afternoon, I saw one of the contestants on the beach with his race number still on his shoulder and legs. The guy was clearly not in the best physical condition and I would have never pegged him as an athlete. However he seemed to have this glow aura thing going on. Not until two weeks before this same race the next year, did I decide to race in the Tin Man. With almost zero training, it was not pretty, but I finished in less than two hours and came in before about fifty other people. After the race, I had the same glow I had seen a year earlier. Since then, I have trained regularly, purchased a race bike and have competed in several triathalons and done a century road race. I have four more races planned this year. The bottom line for me is;
Have fun! |
