If Hincapie wants to blame someone, he better take a long look in the mirror. If he hadn't f*&#ed around over the last few kilometers, and driven the pace like a leader, he would have been pulling the yellow jersey on. I saw Astana control the pace and then Garmin, AG2R, and Silence Lotto push the pace once Hincaapie had finished. It appeared to me that Columbia tried to slow the pace each time they went to the front over the last few km. Even their sprint set-up seemed to be as much an attempt to stall the peloton as it was a true set-up. Astana never went to the front over the last few km. scott |

Lots of Twittering by Astana (Lance, Bruyneel) going on that Garmin screwed Hincape by pushing the pace when there was no need to. Good to see a bit of drama, the tour the last 2 years has gotten kinda boring, we all love each other type stuff. I'm reading the Twitters now. Yep. I ain't buying the "boo hoo it's all Astana's fault" excuse. Astana was off the front, but if they really wanted to close down GH, they would have in an instant. I think GH needs to look at the way his own team has riled up Garmin and ask why they got to the front and pushed. GH is not a contender in the Alps. No way LA and JB would have cared if GH was in yellow going into the mountains. THat wold have been good, let Columbia take the load and do all the work. Much better to let them work themselves than AG2R, who no one thinks will contend for anything IMO |

But, when watching the replay of end of the stage, I thought of something: Why didn't he just put his head down and ridden it like a time trial? Yes, he'd have dragged the others to the line, and they'd have sprinted past him at the end. But the winner got there 16 seconds ahead of everyone else. So they weren't going for the win -- just for 2nd place. I'm thinking that if Hincapie had just GONE, and pulled the others, he might have ended up with a few more seconds in his favor.... And perhaps that might have been enough.... |

Maybe I am naive... but is it remotely possible that Astana riding at the fron was to keep the tempo a bit SLOWER?I really don't think this is LA's fault as some have suggested, nor was it Astana's fault as a team. Garmin really reeled them in when they went to the front. Even GH's own team cost him seconds with the lead out for Cavendish, which ironically enough turned out to be much to do for nothing after he got sent to the back. A bad day for Columbia all around. |

For 5 seconds he could have pushed a bit more at the end, Garmin definitely ate into the lead, and HTC trying to get Cavendish his 13 points didn't help Hincapie either. |

Astana not to blame, because they weren't at front in the end and they could have closed the gap... I put it on and GH and maybe GS a little..... why did he not ride harder........ maybe he did ? Questionable about GS's move at the end too. George is from my hometown and I'd love to see him in the yellow just for day. |

I've watched almost the entire coverage so far. Pretty interesting stuff. Makes me appreciate our "fast group rides" a litle more and REALLY appreciate just how fast these guys ride. Its seriously addictive isnt it? ABSOLUTELY... and I didn't realize how much posturing goes on, and strategy, etc. etc. Hey, I have a question for everyone, and this is not meant cynically or sarcastically at all.. really don't know..... does the strongest/best rider always win the tour each year ? |

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I too have spent years of my life in the peloton here in the US. It doesn't take a genius to see what's going on when you watch it live. And it's also true that in Frankie's initial interview just after the race, LA appeared dumbfounded, or better stated, off script. Later that day he had his story straight and was quick to blame it all on Garmin, who didn't even start pushing until the last few km. However, GH shouldn't really feel upset with LA. They've known each other for years. George should know by now that Lance was in this race for nobody but Lance. Edited by phil25840 2009-07-29 2:27 PM |
