What is the deal w/ this covered bridge? Is it a grated bridge that requires you to get off the bike? I saw a brief comment on a covered bridge but not sure what the deal is?

The bridge is fine. They built a new one that is not grated, so it is much smoother. In order to avoid a grate on the new bridge, however, the new bridge goes up significantly higher than the old bridge. That means it is windy and it's a tough hill for those of us who don't get to do many hills.

Since this is the Oly thread, the swim is 1500. It should be 750m for the sprint.

They're still showing the old run course.

The run for the half has been posted on setupevents...what a pain in the butt that run is.  I knew it would end up using the trail system.  Not sure what you internationals are going to do...but if you use the trail...and it has rained, it could be quite muddy.  Just a warning.  Good luck, 3 weeks left.

A trail run? I didn't sign up for a trail run! I don't DO trail runs! If that's what they are planning for the Oly, then I'm gonna be very unhappy!

I think I am going to bail on this tri Cry.  It has nothing to do with the run change although I don't think I would like a 10K trail run. I raced in a sprint yesterday up in PA and due to my calf strain from a couple of weeks ago I had to take it easy on the bike and I still couldn't muster much of a run without pain. There is no way I can train for a 10K at this point. I guess I will suck it up and go to the doctor and see if they can help me get healed up. We have a sports medicine MD in Richmond who is a triathlete so I will she if I can get an appointment to see her. Y'all have fun at the Patriot.

I haven't run in 3 weeks due to a heel injury and may not get in any more running before this race, but I'm planning to start it. It's my first Oly distance tri and my money has been paid for months so I'm going to give it a go. I have no idea yet what will happen when I come off the bike and lace up my shoes. I might try to run/limp the whole thing, run/walk, walk, DNF...no idea. Definitely not how I want to be heading into this. I'm glad for you that you haven't already plunked down your money.

I am glad I did not pay yet too. I hope you heal up enough to enjoy the race. I want to be well prepared for my first Oly so I can really enjoy the experience. There is always next year.

I hope to be healthy by the Richmond Sprint in Oct and see some of you there.

Sorry to hear you are pulling out, but healing is a whole lot more important than racing. Get better.

Good luck with the Doc

Following my inquiry this afternoon to Setup they posted a pdf of the revised Oly (and the sprint and half). The Oly definitely uses trails. It's unclear if they are paved or unpaved. I've done my best to map it but it's very rough. I hope to receive some more info about the trails soon.

it looks like it just follows the capitol trail, which is all paved or wooden plank bridges.

i just did that exact run sat morning!!!

From their mapping, you guys are doing just the capitol trail...which is all blacktop and wooden bridges (very nice wooden bridges).  The path is wide enough to run 4 abreast.  It is super flat too.  For me, the half is on that blacktop trail...as well as compacted dirt paths with intermittent gravel spots.  I like your run better but I know there was no way for them to create an easy half marathon in that area without the colonial parkway.

I was doing streetview on google for the bike and noticed a bridge being built. Is it done or are we going to have to go across the grated bridge?

MDHillSlug: thanks for posting the new run route!  It is still not up on Setup Events.  Is the new run as "pancake flat" as the original run was advertised to be?

Question for those who have swam in the James River before: can you give a short description of it?  The Setup site describes it as "brackish."  This will be my first Oly, and as a vertical swimmer, the swim will be my biggest concern.  I'll definitely be making up some ground on the bike and run.   Smile

Looking forward to seeing everyone out there!

They are describing this run as flat, too. The route mapper says it has less than 20 feet of climbing per mile but I bet it's even flatter than that prediction.

I must say that the race organizers are doing a pretty poor job of disseminating this info!

Marilyn, you are much to exited about this race. You guys are making me feel bad for not doing it. Can't you just say it will probably suck or something? I want to hear some "glass half empty" remarks so I won't feel bad when I sleep in that morning.

Example: This Oly is so easy it is not even worth doing.

vertical swimmer...meaning you plan to walk it?  close to shore there are lots of rocks - this area is prime oyster/shellfish territory.  the swim is with the current but the current isn't much of a help.  brackish just means we're not far enough upriver to be considered fresh water.  it doesn't taste salty.  it's actually quite clean in that part of the river.

The thought of limping for 6 miles sounds awful. I have an aversion to pain.
