I am in construction and drinking seems to be a prerequisite.

I have been made fun of for not going out and getting drunk regularly.

Frankly, I just do not care.  I got any need to get drunk out of my system long ago.

If they persist, just tell them that you respect their decision to choose to get drunk; you expect them to respect your decision to choose not to get drunk.

I grew up in Poland amids functional alcoholics and I know how hard it is not to get sucked into it. Not drinking with the peers was a serious social offence. The thing that kind of worked for them was a stomach ulcer and after letting them know you had one, they would usually give you a break...

Maybe offer to go saturday, if they are as big of booze hounds as they sound they probably wouldnt turn you down, it might be a nice reward for doing well on a long ride.

They keep hassling you to go out with them?

They must really like your company.

sarahswhere - 2009-09-11 11:15 PM Sorry for the rant, but I'm so irritated!

I ride with a group every saturday morning even though I work until 3am during the week.  I work with people in their early 20s who like to party every Friday.  Every Friday when they pressure me to come out and drink, I tell them I don't go out Friday nights.  They get all indignant like I'm committing a crime.  Over and over and over.  Any suggestions for what would keep their mouths shut for once?

It's not like I never go out and have a good time with them, I just have this one ride I really enjoy every week.

Early 20s sounds like either LTs or young enlisted.  Either way, tell em to F off, you've got business to take care of early in the morning, and that they won't understand until they grow up.

Signed,
A crusty young Major

Tongue out

*EDIT*  Nevermind, you're talking about your day job.  Still, the second sentence of my answer remains applicable.

You hit it right on the head: LT's.  Some of them I would consider friends, but most of them no.  I've been in 11yrs and just recently joined the group so I'm a few years older than most.  Being away from my own home and group of friends, it's a temporary thing to be around them all.  They're good people, just on a different level and place in life.  Oh, and I've tried so many different reasons, all true, and none of them matter.  Just gonna have to stick with the same reason, "I don't go out on Fridays, I ride with a group Saturday morning and I'm not willing to miss it."  I also offer to go out on Saturday instead, but they always turn me down, probably because they feel like crap.

And Detroit: next time I'm up in WI, take the Ludington Ferry across and we'll have a few.  Laughing

dbrawders - 2009-09-12 3:08 PM ask them:

if they've ever ridden anything other than a barstool?

if they ever run anything other than their mouth?

if they ever swm in anything other than their own vomit?

Nice! Had to save this one for it's own response.

At least they're asking you.

My friends know I don't drink.

Guess what they want me to do when I do go with them?

I guess I have the advantage there.  They know I drink occasionally so when I go out, it's not to cart their a$$es around.  Plus, I live downtown where all the partying takes place.  I can just walk home.

I get the same thing and it sucks.  I actually cave in once in awhile because if you don't you'll lose those friends.  Unfortunately, I'm really the only 'active' person at my work so its really not an option to find new friends; its a delicate situation, but I typically cave in, drink 1 beer for like 3 hours, and leave.

The bad thing for me about drinking any more than 1 I'm at a risk for a hangover, then its 2 days training lost.  I could drink 9 beers and be fine, or 2 beers and be drastically hung over.  Not sure what the formula is...

Next time explain that you are volunteering community service on a police ride along to patrol for drunk drivers, be sure to ask several times where they will be drinking at!
