Veteran 274 State College, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Last year I stayed at Lake Placid Summit Hotel. Decent place, friendly staff and a short walk to the Olympic Oval ~15 min. Biggest complant about the place was just that it was old, you could tell that it hadn't really been updated since the '80s. Not that it was in disrepair, just old. Decent price too all considered. This year I'm staying at High Peaks resort in one of the Lake Side rooms. Its a bit pricy but I love the location and the ability to just walk out of my room and go for a swim is a major plus. Also I've yet to read a bad review of the place. One week to knee surgery, can't wait. I'm looking at about a week until I can get in the pool(just need to wait for the incisions to heal). A few weeks until I can get on a trainer w/ no resistance, up to two months till I can starting real biking and then maybe 4 months until I can start running. Granted those are the normal recovery times. I'm hopping to go a lot faster. Considering all the training I've been doing over the last few years I think I'm in a pretty good place going into the surgery. Edited by drdking 2011-08-16 7:43 PM |

I wanted to do IMLP this year, but I missed the online window, so I did IMCDA and had a great time on a beautiful course. Anyone know how to rate IMLP vs. IMCDA? Looking forward to the journey with you all!!! |

Just curious I have ridden the course before but would love to hear others peoples feeling on wheels and gearing. Someone (I think maybe Fred?) posted in the 2010 thread a breakdown of gearing based on the time you expect to finish. It was pretty good. Something like 5hrs-5:30 use 11-21, 5:30 to 6:00 use 12-25, beyond 6:30 use a triple up front, ect. Not sure exactly the breakdown...I will take a look back in the thread when I get some time. It was good advice. |

Extreme Veteran 398 Sea Isle City, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Aero wheels including disks are very common at LP. My thought it is pretty much your average race as far wind goes unless you get a freak storm day which could happen at any race. Trees do protect you to a certain degree. Anyone else have an opinion on the winds up there? |

Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I did IMLP last 2 years and used standard crank and 12-27, I rode just under 6 hours both times with no problems. I think its all about you bike fitness and what you will be most comfortable with. IMO it's better to have an extra gear than not enough. Jim

Regular 123 York | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I don't think any climbs need more than 39-25 really. On the high end, 52-12 should definitely be enough for 112 unless you're a sub 5 hour animal...lol.I agree with other posts that it's just fitness and pace here. What you road train with would probably be perfect. I think 12-27 would be fine even for strong biker here. (52/39) Edited by haight2 2011-08-19 8:01 PM |

Extreme Veteran 567 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I'll be riding my road bike that has a compact crank, and I believe 12-27 in back (Still trying to find out for sure, I didn't pay much attention when I bought the bike last year). I was able to do a loop of the bike course this year while I was up volunteering and it seems like I'll really have to work on my bike fitness, at times I still seemed to run out of gears. Though I'm not sure the best way to tackle the hills I did the whole course seated so by the time I was done my quads were toasted, I'll have to look at my avg mph but it wasn't that good either. |

Veteran 274 State College, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Last year for the bike I used a compact with a 11/27 on my Speed Concept 9. I orginially wanted a 11/28 but its not compatable with Di2. In the end the 11/27 was fine. I really only needed the 27 on the second loop after I started majorly cramping due to dehydration. I also race on a pair of Zipp 808 FC Carbon Clinchers which are fricken out of this world. The Keene descent was a bit sketchy with the direction the wind was blowing last year but nothing to worry about. |

Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread triguy1043 - 2011-08-19 1:46 PM What kind of bike set-ups is everyone using and what kind of gearing? Just curious I have ridden the course before but would love to hear others peoples feeling on wheels and gearing. My bike split at Lake Placid was a 6:05:01 -- first lap 3:01 and second lap 3:04, and I used a regular crank with a 12-27 cassette. The 12-27 was perfect, for me. I never felt like I needed an extra gear. On the climbs up to the Keene descent, the climb from Jay to Wilmington, and the final climb up Papa Bear, I just threw it into the easiest gear and spun away and it felt pretty easy. As for my wheelset, I had a pair Jet 60 C2's. The crosswinds on the Keene descent were pretty stiff and I was getting blown around, and I'm not light at 172-ish pounds. However, I am also not a good descender. So I was glad not have anything deeper than a 60. But again, this is my preference based off my individual cycling abilities. Your results may vary. Regular 123 York | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Sounds perfect to me. I'll put a 12/27 on my 303 wheels. If I can't ride 5:45- 6:00 it certainly won't be my bikes fault...lolHe'll, I just got back from a hilly training ride with my 11/23. I'm putting the 27 on this week an I'm sure this loop would be faster. Edited by haight2 2011-08-21 3:07 PM |

What did you have repaired? I had a meniscus repair in Oct 09 and was good to go for IMLP 10. Get back in the pool as soon as possible. Really helped me keep sane and kept things from atrophying (sp?). Good luck. |

My right ACL. It was the Allograft surgery, replacement with the anterior tibialis tendon from a cadaver. As soon as the wounds heal the Doc told me I can get back in the water. I'm using this period as my 'off season' so I can start getting my base early this year. Me and my doctor were expecting some meniscus damage, but when he got in there he said it was in great shape, so very happy with that. I actually felt bad for my doctor, he hurt his Achilles yesterday doing some pickup intervals in a new pair of Vibriams 5-fingers, so he was limping throughout the morning and I'm told the surgery. It really is nice having a doctor who is an athlete himself(top AG triathlete back in college/med-school). |
