Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wingsfan - 2011-08-31 12:08 PM 1) Airborne Toxic Event --- Recent obssesion, I've been aware of them for the past couple of years, but didn't give them much attention till I stumbled across their cover of Book of Love from their concert DVD. Still not all that crazy about their commercial released stuff, but they made accoustic, one take videos for all of the songs off their latest album that are fantastic. Search for Airborne Toxic Event Bombastic videos on youtube. Numb, All at Once and All for a Woman are my favorites. 2) Kings of Leon--- Sadly, they seem to be imploding via "Lead Singer Ego Syndrome". Love their origins of travelling with their (questionably moraled) preacher father to revival camps all over the south. Unlike many of their core fans, I like their more refined last two albums better than the rawness of their earlier offerings. 3) Robert Plant --- I'm listening to more of his newer stuff (esp with Allison Krause) more than Led Zepplin lately, but I'll cheat and include both. They way his music has evolved is a pretty good parallel to my musical tastes as I get older. I still like the heavy, loud older stuff, but have more appreciation for the more mellow music. The fact that he's been able to do both is still creating at such a high level after all these years makes it even better. Why I should get an invite - I'm in the process of switching over my workout music from my ipod to my Android phone. My gen 3 Nano is getting flakey on me (probably due to me sweating like a pig). I just got a waterproof armband for my Evo to use with both swimming and running and would love to see how Google has integrated music management between web, desktop and mobile. Mostly good (I find ATE to be pretentious and uninteresting), but you could use some breadth. Follow the Plant/Krause angle. The guitar player on their last tour was Buddy Miller. Investigate his solo stuff and his records with his wife. As an Android user, I applaud your switching your music. PM me your email address. One invite left. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bob Marley - because my 3 year old likes me to sing "Three Little Birds" to her at bedtime, plus ya gotta like the ganga thing REM- their early Athens, GA stuff where you can't understand the lyrics NOT the sellout/arena stuff Public Enemy - cuz they got a message and they did a cool remix with Anthrax Billy Bragg - he hasn't the greatest voice but he is a Raging English Liberal (and I met him once in Boston and he was really nice and even introduced me to his wife) Dinosaur Jr. - J Mascis is a weird genius and their songs resonated me in college and now (plus I met them in college and they were nice to me when I bought them some beer)

Bruce Springsteen - Because he's The Boss. Plus I'm a Philly boy and used to live in Joisey Red Hot Chili Peppers - Great workout music and my teenage boys and I have something in common here. Pink Floyd - I had a misspent youth, what can I say? Stevie Ray Vaughan/Eric Clapton - Sometimes I just need loud blues guitar! And I love jazz too.... Pat Metheny - best of the current jazz guitarists, been a PM fan for 25 years. Miles Davis - especially older Miles. So much talent and soul. T. Monk - Straight, no chaser. Unbelievable pianist, unbelievable life.
I should get the invite because I'll use the heck out of it! Music is always on at home and in the office. And it get progressively louder and edgier as we chase deadlines.
Great list, although I haven't felt the need to get any new Pat Metheny music is quite a while. The Seneca quote in your sig also helped. You're in. Two invites left.
BTW I have a good Motown related story: I'm a bass player and I bought the Book/Cassette package called "Standing In the Shadows of Motown", which was about James Jamerson, the bass player on most of the old Motown songs. This was iin 1989. I didn't know anything about Jamerson but I knew I loved the bass playing on those Motown tunes. Plus Geddy Lee was in it. It had to be good, right? They were just killing time in the hotel bar before another corporate gig. I got one of the most incredible afternoons of my life and some great first hand reminiscences about Jamerson, the Funk Brothers, etc. That's a great story! Motown is just perfect music - I can have 3 generations (my mom and kids) in the car and we're all singing. The first music my oldest son asked for as a present was Motown 1's. What is so funny is his relationship with my generations music. It's like he was the first one to find out about The Who, for example. Then he goes through my vinyl and realizes I have most of their albums. As far as Pat goes, I could live without Orchestrion and some all of the electronic stuff. Metheny Mehldau is awesome though. I saw him with Ornette Coleman (Song X) and it was too atonal for my tastes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, I'll play...
Violent Femmes: I was introduced to the band one night when I was out with some friends, we met some of their friends, and then some of their friends... next thing I know I woke up the next morning about 120 miles from home in a dorm room on the campus of UConn. I knew exactly one other person in the room (thankfully!) and the Hallowed Ground cassette was playing in the boom box. Got to listening to it and liked it, followed the band ever since. Live shows were great, they would always end up being some random folks coming in and playing with the band.. they even invited folks from the audience to come up and play. Jill Sobule: She is a fantastic story teller and have a very unique way of relating her own, as well as others, life stoies into song. Each track is like a short story put to music. Beastie Boys: Sorta mainstream now, I know, but what other band can you name that started out playing some rather hard core punk music, then move to a rap/hip-hop flavor, and end up being nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame? They were pioneers and have influenced dozens of other bands and artists. Velvet Underground: A very rare band that seemed to have multiple personalities and pulled both off pretty well. You never knew if you were going to get a folksy type Lou Reed song/album or an edgy, loud, noisy song/album that sounded like kids banging on instruments, yet that seemed to work.
Why should I get an invite... well honestly I'm just anti-apple and have embraced the Google way... you know better, easier, cheaper, and open. |

Well what chat think? Oops, missed this one. They're all good, but it's all mainstream, mostly early MTV rock. GnR to REM isn't that big of a stretch. Plus I'm not seeing much depth here. There's no "I love Zep and I got into Delta blues/Bert Jansch/folk/eastern music because of them". Your taste in music is ok, it's just very narrow. So, I will award you the last invite with the hope that you will use it to investigate the incredible range of music available to you. And that's the last of the invites. Thanks for playing! If any winners receive their own invites to give away, I hope you will offer at least some of them up here. |

I need 4 musical artist suggestions (with the reason I should listen to them) AND some type of original (by you) poetry. White Stripes - awesome, awesome workout music. So sad they have split Aimee Mann - one of the best voices out there - the "Forgotten Arm" album was/is remarkable. She did the song from "Magnolia" called "Rise Up". Wilco - hard to describe, but truly a fantastic band. I've seen them twice live and will now attempt to see them any time they get close to Maine (which, unfortunately is not terribly often) Brad - Shawn Smith (the lead singer) is a god. Enough said. Although when I heard one of their songs at the grocery store the other day, a little part of me died. My poem: There once was a man from Nantucket...(Just kidding) A music related haiku: All music is not the same. Some of it takes you to a different place

Bombino - Agadez You can hear the desert in this music. A Nigerian musician who plays an amazing guitar. And he doesn't want your help to transfer money, he just floats over the strings. Jezabels - Dark Storm EP They don't have a longer album... yet. The vocals are beautiful, and there's a quiet fury building through their songs. Vieux Farka Toure - Fondo The son of Ali Farka Toure. What? You don't know who that is? Time to rectify that situation. Especially if you a fan of the blues. Delta blues? How about Mali. Dropkick Murphys Sometimes we just need to sing loud and sing proud and dance a spicy mchaggis jig. ![]() Hmmm, poetry... how about a little Ironman haiku: As sun rises The thousands line up to start Seize the day |

Grew up on classic rock (Esp prog: old Yes, ELP, VH, Rush, etc...) so I won't go there - been done. However, I'm Led Zeppelin nerd (spell it correctly people) - I won't go into it but I have a about 80 boots - mostly '70 - '75 tours. My fav are Japan 71 and Euro 73 - of course anything US from 72 is prime... What I like: odd time signatures. Musicians. No song is too long. Vocals are optional. Lyrics don't matter.... at all. What I like that you may *NOT* have heard of: King Crimson (and any off-shoots: Belew, Bruford, Fripp) Crazy creative. Not for the girsl and/or parties. Mike Keneally - just check him out. Hard to describe... mixture of XTC, Zappa and Steely Dan? And he shreds too. Again, not big with the ladies or backround music. The Mars Volta - hang on to your hats... it's going to be a bumpy ride. Think King Crimson, Rush and Zeppelin thrown in a psychadelic blender. Jeff Buckley - yes, I have a soul too. You probably know of him... What a voice. Bonus: Radiohead and The Smiths.
