I am a Guinness lover also...

Me as well .........

The only time I order a beer at lunch is when I meet my old co-workers from my last firm and we are shooting the s--t (which is about once every month or two).

But at other times I usually don't drink much at all. I'm a borderline beer snob when I do because I can't drink what I consider crud beer like Bud or Coors Light (crud to my taste buds, but certainly not to others, more power to them).

In my case the race was already going downhill and I think the beer actually helped at least mentally. Of course I kept retasting(belch) it the entire way, so I had something else to think about besides my aching legs......

YEARS (and I do mean YEARS) ago while travelling across Canada had the absolute BEST PORTER in my whole life- have NEVER been able to duplicate the taste- may have been the whole deal,y'know - the moment etc-......

Did someone say PORTER?

Oh god I love this stuff. Tough to get outside on Pennsylvania and some parts of Florida, though. I highly recommend buying ten or fifteen cases.

This thread is about two posts away from being banished to COJ. Quick, someone say something about negative splits or Bodyglide or the relative merits of bike color schemes.

southwestmba - 2005-11-25 7:34 PM At the Philly Marathon at about mile 19 and 21 there was a Beer Stop on the course. The folks at a local tavern were handing out ice cold beer to whom ever wanted it. After 21 miles, that was the best tasting beverage I ever tasted and it certainly made the worst 5 miles of the race easier to deal with.. Another thing I've noticed, many major races have beer gardens at the finish. I workout so I can enjoy the good things in like a cold brew. (Public Service announcement: don't drink and drive and underage drink is not legal; Please enjoy responsibly)

Years ago I did the Yonkers Marathon.  One of the water stations was by a firehouse, and the firefighters were manning the tables.  They were passing out water, and enjoying a few cold ones at the same time.  They were joking around with the runners by annoucing "water, beer, water, beer."  I think they were surprised when I opted for the beer.  The beer hit the spot, and gave me a nice little boost for the remainder of the race.  When I did NYC in the fall I looked for beer along First Avenue, and again it gave me a nice shot in the arm for the latter stages of the race.

I've never had any during a triathlon, and I don't think I would either.  My triathlons take me a lot less time then any of my marathons ever did, and I don't see any benefit in a race thats taking me less then 3 hours to complete.

Now I prefer my glass of wine.

Well, that involves a bike, which = vehicle, which = driving under the influence.

My rowing coach told me a story about her OSU coxswain days (now, any of you former rowers can attest to the *ahem* "hydration strategies" of rowers)...she was a man short for her boat, so the coach sent them on a run to find the guy (a good 5 or 6 miles) and they ended up finding him about 2 miles away from the boathouse, face down, in a grass median, with a helmet on backwards after falling off a bike with streamers on it. Apparently, he had been trying to make it to practice.

Now, I'm not a drinker, in fact, I've never drank at all. But I am going to Norhtern Ireland for 6 months, so I suppose I will learn my fair share about pub culture. The exchange student from the uni I'm staying at said, "if you don't drink, join a club or something because the student center literally IS a pub."

I really enjoy a nice cold beer after a long hot bike ride......for some reason I never drink beer after a run... I have been offered beer at a couple of marathons and distance races, by some hashers ,at about mile 21....just can't do that. Although at Hotter-N-Hell 100 in Whicita Falls there is a machine shop that has cold beer waiting for whoever wants to stop at about mile 97.....taste pretty darn good at mile 97!!

I was able to particpate in an annual hash run yesterday. It was a short run (2.5 miles). That beer sure deoes hit you a lot harder after a run.

There is nothing better here in Lubbock, but to go on a long bike ride and then end up at Hub City Brewery for a few micro brews. Especially on Wednesdays big beer night for $1.50. I really think that I workout so I can enjoy good food and good drink.

My comment to both types of people (lovers & haters) is "It's just beer". If you like it, enjoy it ... if you don't like it, don't drink it. Simple.

Some folks act like beer is "happiness in a bottle" (and it may temporarily be *grin*), other act like it's satan in liquid form. It's just a beverage.

The difference among beverages is, obviously, that it contains alcohol. For that reason I would not advise consuming beer at lunch and then returning to work. I don't want to my boss to try and guess whether I had 1 or 6 (I'm goofy enough the way the is). I have drank beer(s) at lunch while eating at a bar & grill, and then returned to work. But, now, as a teacher, that's something I definately would not do.

Dinner? Sure I'll have beer (or few). No biggie. I can enjoy a beer, or a diet dr. pepper or a milkshake. Just beverages.

After a long ride on a hot day, a few coronas in the evening really do hit the spot (especially when grilling steak). I call that "Man Time".

Beer is good.

I try to avoid it the few days before a BIG event, but it is a healthy component to training and nutrition.

A beer or few with the people you work and hang out with is a great way to find out the true nature of things.
