![]() | ![]() NAME: Kimberly Smith, 40 STORY: I have always been active, doing marathons, mountaineeriing, rock climbing, etc. I moved to Portland, OR and the tri sceen is very active there (despite the weather). I couldn't really swim other then dog paddle and floating around so I signed up for some DU's. After doing a few DU's I keep watching the Tri's going on at the same time thinking of how I wish I could join them. So finally I did. Signed up for a race and then decided I better learn how to swim. And one of these days I will. lol I have done a few sprints and a few HIM's. I have yet to do an Oly. I now live in Tucson and of course enjoy great training conditions, as long as you do not want to practice OWS. FAMILY STATUS: Live with my partner of 6 years, two dogs, and two cats. CURRENT TRAINING: I am currently training for Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 in April. I am hoping to jump right from that into Ironman training. I am going to be on the east coast in July so thought I would go race in the Iron race being held in Darthmoth, NS, which is where I use to live. I have family there and feel it would be the perfect time to train for and see if I like the longer distance (I love the HIM distance). I believe I will also do the DU Championships at the end of April since they are held here in Tucson. 2011 RACES: My race schedule is generally low in tri's as I have to travel for most of them. Traveling is a complicated thing in my world. The Elephant Man Long Course tri was my A race for 2011 and that race nearly idd me in. The course was advertised as hard, and I thought it might be difficult, but wow. You know you are in for a world of hurt when the volunteers all stop and cheer for those checking in for the long course. 03/12/2011 - Seroma 5k (R) (doing this for my virtual Christchurch run) 04/09/2011 - Catalina State Park Trail Run - 10.35 Miles (R) 04/30/2011 - USAT Duathlon National Championship (R) 05/01/2011 - Warrior Dash - 3.4 Miles (R) 05/07/2011 - Elephant Head Challenge Mountain bike race (R) 09/05/2011 - Saguaro National Park Labor Day 5k Run (R)-running with Tina 09/25/2011 - Elephant Man Long Course Tri (R) 11/19/2011 - El Tour de Tucson - 109 Miles (changed to 111)(R) 2012 RACES: So far the only race registered for is Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 on April 1st. I have the desire to do the DU championship at the end of April and an Iron race on July 1st. I have a few running races as well, with a HM in FL early Jan and a 8 mile trail run in Feb. I will probably sprinkle a few other running races in there and maybe one more tri later in the season. WEIGHT LOSS GOALS: I struggle with my weight a lot. I am not overweight, but not as lean as I would like to be. I have no doubts as to why, I eat. And eat, and eat and eat.... usually cookies. I am trying to learn to move towards good for me foods when I snack. I tried not snacking but that doesn't go over well with my body. So I just need to retrain myself. But it is a minor concern, not really something I stress about too much. WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE: I have done some HIM's and I feel I have that training down pretty good and how to fit it into my life. But this year I am training to "race" vs finish. I don't expect to place, I am still slow, but I want to pick the brains of those who race vs just doing. Also, I really want to be successful at my Iron attempt as it might be my one and only and having someone who knows how to train for them, fit them into their life and has been there is what I am looking for. I also love to motivate others and tend to be really consistant in my training, which might help with the motivation if others are checking logs. |

Back to the grindstone pretty quickly though I've got a half mary coming the end of Jan. Can't wait till we go live so we can get this group movin. Have a Happy New Year everyone!!
What race are you doing? I have a trail half marathon on January 7th that I am prepping for. I was anticipating it to be a snowy hilly trail run but we have had no significant accumulations yet here in MI. I have never raced this long of a distance without a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike in front of it so just hoping for the best. I have fallen in love with trail running this fall so signed up for this race about an hour away from my home. Is anybody else planning on racing in the next month or so? |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll be doing the Territorial half marathon locally here in Yuma,AZ. I have wasted some great weather sitting on my butt over the holidays. That all comes to a screeching halt at 03:30 tomorrow morning. Time to get back to work! Edited by bdoss 2011-12-26 10:24 PM |

I have a half marathon coming up, as the first part of the Disney marathon relay (Jan 8th). You should have a blast during your race. Trail runs are my all time favorite and a HM is just about the right distance. I try and get a few in when I can. Just remember to pay attention to your feet when you start getting tired. I have a 8 miler trail run in Feb here. My weather will be completely different then yours most likely. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2011-12-27 4:59 PMIMHO tri bikes do not 'save you for the run' as there is some quasi data on this, rather they get you from point A to point B faster. Most of us want that regardless if we want to win or not. Tri Ike's are faster because they allow you to be in a more aerodynamic position. This is of course, if you are actually riding in the aero position. Many people towards the middle to back of the back have not trained well enough in aero to be prepared for 112 miles of aero riding. (this is where I think I can give back most to the group, unlike Fred I have a lot of experience with mid to back of pack perspective). |

Most of us want that regardless if we want to win or not. Tri Ike's are faster because they allow you to be in a more aerodynamic position. If Fred does not mind me adding to his opinion, A tri bike is designed to get a rider in an aerodynamically beneficial position, allowing an athlete to expend less energy to go the same speed as a non aerodynamic position, or in some cases faster overall speed at the same power expenditure. That is where myth becomes a reality, a Tri bike makes you run better; not because you are in a different or magical position, it allows you to run better if you have trained properly, paced properly and taken in correct nutrition (long course and Iron distance) and because you have conserved energy by taking advantage of a better aerodynamic position to go the same speed as someone with a non aero position. Arguably, your Tri bike and road bike should be set up with the exact same angles in your body, the main difference is a Tri bike ROTATES your body forward on the bike on an axis at your hip, done by moving your seat tube angle forward or steeper and saddle nose position even with or forward of the bottom bracket (not quite that simple but you get my point), allowing you to get aero or lower in the front, while still maintaining hip angle that allows you to pedal effieciently. |

Yup a tri bike is faster than a road bike, whether you are fit or you are not.Fred D - 2011-12-27 4:43 PM Sitting in the Cleveland airport waiting for a flight. Anyone want to start with any good tri questions? I'll give it a shot. I'm doing my first IM next Aug/Sept and I have a Fuji road bike with Shimano 105's and clip on aerobars. My longest ride so far on it is a HIM. How big of a deal is it to get to a tri specific bike considering my bike fitness is FAR from maxed out. Is it worth the expense or should I just keep on working on the engine first? I don't have a full grasp on the geometry differences so does the tri bike put you in a better position to ride long then run? I agree. You mentioned you are doing Cedar Point Full which is a very flat course and can be windy. You would likely benefit quite a bit from a tri bike. With that said, you would not be the only one at the dance without a tri bike if you decide to stick with your road bike. |

I wonder if i download the trainerroad software to a remote hard drive if i can run it through the PS3 that way??

![]() | ![]() I would love to be able to get into a pool without showering right now. Sigh. The heated pool I go to is closed right now. I have access to one that is not heated and I was going to use it with my wetsuit, giving me much needed time in the silly suit (don't even care if I ruin it really) but then I got bit by my dog and got 13 stitches. So now the stitches are out and I can swim but the bite was on my upper lip, which is full of nerves and apparently it can take months for that to get back to normal. It is extremely cold sensitive now. I can't imagine how it will feel in the cold pool. To make matters worse I found out upon waking yesterday I am allergic to penicillin and my body is in complete hives. So the wetsuit is probably out for a few days (although maybe the cold water would feel good for that the rubbing of the suit probably not). So, anyone have any tips on how to minimize the impact of no swimming for what is looking at a minimum of 2 weeks, if not the full month until I can get back to the heated pool? I really don't want to restart my swim fitness all over again... |
