my bike is about ready and my swim is not too far behind. However, I am still on hiatus from running which I am most worried about due to stress reaction in foot. BOO me. Hope y'all are healthy!

mad-dog - 2013-01-02 4:00 PM How is the training going? I am in week 4 of 18 week program. So far, so good.

Just getting back into training mode, waited to see if the Mayans were right.  Honestly though, now that Christmas is over, we've got most of the boxes emptied from our move and I finally found all of my tri gear I am glad to be training again.  Hope everyone else is doing well and staying healthy.

I am using the free 18 week program off of Trinewbies.Com. It will be my first HIM. I asked what others thought of this program on the main board and got mixed reaction. A fewthought it was low on volume(mainly the run), but oh well, live and learn. You guys?

This will be my 4th full year in triathlon and my 2nd HIM.  I am using the BT 20 week HIM training plan, however I did not get started until this week so my plan is more like a 16 week plan.

I did use a Trinewbies plan for my very first tri back in 2009 and it worked fine for me, although it was a sprint so the run was only 3 miles.  I have been using BT plans since and have had great success with them.

Good luck with your training.

Well, this will be my first HIM. I am just winging it to tell you the truth. I started using TrainerRoad back in early December, and enjoyed it, so I thought I'd just continue that and build swims/runs around it. My run base is OK from last year, and am really trying to build a bigger bike engine for my IMFL in November later this year.

I'm driving down from Murfreesboro, Tn (outside of Nashville) on Friday before the race. Where is everyone staying? Closer to transition or closer to the French Quarter?

I'm staying with relatives on the west side of NOLA.  I'm driving over Thursday/Friday and heading out Monday.

We're staying close to transition. I was a slug through December and now I'm feeling the pressure of not staying on my training schedule. Well, I say that when it's not really that bad. I've run 3 HM's I just haven't been on my bike much and that is what I really need to be doing.

I have a friend from growing up who has a bed and breakfast in the Garden District so that's where I'll stay.

I just wanted to say hi to everyone. This is going to be my first HIM and my 2nd year doing triathlons. Last year I did 2 sprints and an oly. I just finished my first few weeks of training and couldn't be more excited. Hopefully we get to swim this year since they moved the swim course. April 21st will be here before we know it!

Welcome! What plan are you using? I am a few weeks in also. Trying to avoid injuries, and stay focused. Yes, no swim cancellation!

I believe I'm using the same one as you actually, the 18 week tri-newbies plan. This is my first time using a plan cause last year I just trained when I wanted to.

Same here. Weeks 6 and 7 are really starting to increase the volume(for me any way). I need to start dialing in the nutrition.

I'm starting week 5 tomorrow. I don't have a nutrition plan either. I never needed one on the shorter races and I've never had a gel, chew, waffle, or drink upset my stomach. I'm going to start experimenting with different things though.

I am in as well. I have done a handful of HIMs, and two 140.6, Florida 2011 and Arizona 2012.

A number of friends have done this race the last two years, and I think both times, had the swim been held as planned, would have been wetsuit legal. the swim in Galveston has always been wetsuit legal the three times I have done it, and that is only a couple weeks earlier.

Kurt, happy anniversary come April. FQ is a great place to celebrate...

How's the training going. I am getting into volumes that I've never done and a little sore.. May further back off the intensity to hopefully avoid injury. Good luck.

Where is everyone staying?  Hotels in the quarter look pretty booked up, and what remains looks expensive.

Yes, i have procrastinated too. I have several friends in N.O. So will ask them. If i hear of anything "close" and not too costly, will post. I have no energy lately. Getting in the volume and life right now is tough.

Been a while since we've had any chatter on this race.  How's everyone doing?  How is the training going?  Successes? Struggles?  Frustrations?

Well, i have been following my plan fairly close with the exception of the run. Left ankle quad has been tender for past two weeks, so i have missed several scheduled runs, but strangely neither bother me on the bike. Also I am pretty tired lately, getting into volumes that i have never reached prior. Still, highly motivated! You?

Training is going well.  Since this is the New Orleans 69.1, I haven't swam yet!  Seriously though, I am concentrating on the areas where I know I can improve.  My swim never changes, always 2:00/100 yds.  Doesn't matter how much or how little I train, it's always the same pace.  I do plan on getting back in the water in late February, until then I will keep hammering the the bike and run.  My biggest success so far was this last weekend, I had a 90 mile solo ride where I averaged 17+ mph.  And that was against a steady headwind the last 30+ miles back.  My biggest frustration so far is the lack of weight loss.  I'm putting in 500-700 minutes of workouts per week and not moving the scale!

cwpeters,

i like that,,my swim pace is always 2 minutes every 100 yards also..It's my pace and i like it.  I glide after every stroke which conserves energy and allows me to swim long and well with good energy for the bike and the run.

cwpeters,

I use a Totalgym machine for most of my swim training.  Works just like the VasaTrainer for swim specific training.

nothing like dryland swimming for the convienence.

I used it for like 5 months and when I got in the water again i sawm like 2 miles strong.

You can virtually simulate your swimming stroking, rolling side to side and breathing on this thing..  I swear by it... I only go to the Y once a week to get a long swim in only because the place where I work paid for the free membership.  Otherwise I would be waiting for the weather to warm up for a lake swim with a wetsuit.

No need for water with the TotaLgym.  Only when you need to acclimate yourself to to it beofre an event.

Kurt

Not sure how I missed this thread.  Signed up a while ago.  Can't beat the price.

Staying at the Doubletree next to the casino which is next to the host hotel.  I did the race 2 years go and stayed at the same place.

Nice that they changed the swim so maybe I'll get to swim this year.  The run at least comes close to downtown.  It used to come all the way to the river. Now it is on the outskirts of the Quarter.

Not following a specific plan.  Have done enough HIM's that I just up my volume a bit as we get closer to the race.  Pretty much running over 10 mi for long run, biking 60+ every weekend and swims are strong so no worries.

We have about 10 people coming for the race.  Should be fun!
