Just about 280 slots left to fill for the full, looks like the registration is slowing a bit.  Officially registered yesterday and this will be my first full.  Feels awesome and scary all at the same time!  3 weeks out from my Raleigh HIM and then the journey really ramps up!

Believe there was a price increase first of May which usually leads to large groups of signups and then slowdown till next price increase.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Waiting 'til finish the IM 70.3 here in Raleigh on June 2 to see if I have the energy to go long again in 4 mos.

Did the B2B 70.3 in 2011 when it was freakishly cold and windy and T2 was at the battleship. I enjoyed the race and always thought about doing the 140.6.

I have a feeling that a major reason the full is filling up quicker is due to the lower number of IM branded 140.6's being offered these days and there hyper quick sellout. I know the other big selling points are the "faster" swim due to current & salt water, all flat course, end of the season schedule wise, price, beach local, as well as the race has really good reviews.

hmmm... I think I may have just sold myself.

I think the positive reviews after last year's run course/finish line change have helped with the slots selling faster.

Interested in this. I did the freakish cold race in 2011. My 2012 full (hot) I was about 1.5 hours slower than B2B so and I'm thinking about coming back this year for a PR attempt. It's a lot farther travel for me now though so I'm going to have to talk myself into it somehow. Anyone that did it 2012 and previous years have an opinion on the course change?

I wore a sleeveless wetsuit in both the half in 2010 and the full in 2011 and I plan to wear a sleeveless again in October Smile

Janyne- were there lots of others with them? Or are you just super tough? I dont like the restricted feeling of sleeved... one thought I had was to go sleeveless w/ arm sleeves (ones made of same material as wetsuit).

I'm taking a couple weeks off during the peak of my training and want to go somewhere that would be good to train... Would Wilmington be a good place to go? Can you ride the bike course? Or is it high traffic?

Anyone have any other thoughts on a good place to go and train? I live in Texas, but would be willing to go just about anywhere... right now I'm considering Keystone, CO, a couple places in Florida, Galveston, TX or maybe even NC...

No, most people wore full suits.

Not particularly tough or acclimated to cold water, just own a sleeveless.  The water temperature in 2011 was 69 degrees.  The water temperature was cooler in 2010 but it was also several weeks later in the year whereas this year's event is three days before the 2011 date.

I'm now officially signed up for the Full.  This will be my first 140.6.... I hope it's gentle.

I have a friend who is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.  He is now in Louisville but he used to work in the Wilmington office and is very familiar with the tide charts (he's also done the B2B HIM so is familiar with the course).  He said that the 2013 swim will be similar to the 2010 one... nearly slack at the beginning of the full, getting better for the half but still only about half the push that there was in the other years.

that is what i was thinking. It sounds like the times will be "normal" IM times for the swim. In 2010 I think the swim was somewhat against the swimmers at first and then the current changed with the swimmers. Thats good info because many people cut way back on their swim yardage because of the strong current at this event. This year that wouldnt be smart.

I did the half in 2011 and 2012. While the new run course now contains a rather unpleasant triangle you have to do twice per lap, I think the downtown finish makes up for that. No more bus lines, incredibly easy gear pickup post -race, and a way better crowd at finish. It also eliminates the two big hills on the run, which is good or bad depending on your preference.

Yeah, you don't finish at the battleship, but you can see it, and logistically the course changes are n improvement, IMO.

Are they starting the full at 7:30 again this year?  If so, I would think that would help us a bit.

Begins at 7:30. Just going by what your friend said. 2010 was slowest swim by far, even slower than usual IM times. Most people were swimming 20-25 minutes than other years at B2B.

Wasn't the wind heading the opposite direction of the tide causing some chop?  I did the half that year and I remember some chop.

On these slack/changing tides, swim is usually better for the half than the full. I did the full in 2010 and 2011, and it was pretty rough going in 2010.

I didnt race in 2010 but had friends who did. That was the year it was extremely cold and the current wasnt with them at the beginning. Times will just be more realistic this year and participants need to prepare for that.

Well, FWIW, i has a heck of a lot colder on the bike in 2011 than I was on the swim in 2010. Yes, people should prepare for a "normal" swim, and not count on a push.

Yeah...I was so wet/cold in '11, I couldn't get my fingers to open my Uncrustables.

I've done B2B every year, and the only thing the weather has never thrown at us is heat. T'is why I love it so...
