I've searched alot of people and seen alot of people searched.......there's really not much to it, or much discussion about it afterwards. It's business. I'm the same way. In my case, working in the fitness industry I am often in very close proximity to people of all shapes and sizes to take their measurements. As you say, it's business. I've never been party to nor even overheard a conversation among trainers that judged someone they are working with. We truly don't pay attention beyond gathering the numbers needed to perform the job.

That would be divine. coredump - 2013-01-18 12:17 PM Kido - 2013-01-18 1:51 PM I don't fly that much to remember or notice. Do they send kids through those or make them bypass? Kids go in a bin along with your shoes and metallic objects...
And into the cargo area.... I forgot Tony was born a fully mature adult and was never "that kid." Rules are that kids under 4'7" don't get scanned. But in the last 3 years, I haven't seen a single teenage girl get scanned. I've seen teenaged boys get scanned though. I have gotten to the point that I don't mind the scanners. And they generally don't slow me down much. I do worry a bit about the cancer aspects because I fly a lot and getting zapped in addition to the flying itself doesn't bode well for my chances of avoiding cancer... (I read somewhere that a 2 hour flight gives you more rads than getting scanned 200x, but like someone said, calibration could change that). |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My insulin pump is not able to go through an XRay, and the manufacturer recommends not going through the backscatter machines either (in fact, it voids your warranty if you do). Insulin pumps are MEGA expensive, and mega important, so yes, I get the patdown every time. I'd say 7 out of 10 times, it's not a big deal. They call a female TSA agent, and we get on with it. BUT! This last time I was at Newark, the TSA agent tried to bully me in to using the back scatter. "Other diabetics do it!" and "You're going to have to wait a long time!" Meanwhile, I had my little TSA card explaining the situation, the card from the manufacturer, and one of her coworkers was straight up telling her "no, she can't go through". I just hate being bullied or pressured to do something that could endanger my life. If my pump was to malfunction for some reason due to the scanner, then I'd be in big trouble. I'm playing by the rules, asking for my right to be screened by hand, and I won't be shouted down or talked to like a child because I'm asking for it. That's why I leave two hours or more ahead of time, and travel with documentation in at least one language. Bah. Humbug. |

Sneaky Slow ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is a welcome change for many trans people. The disconnect between some people's external presentation and the, er, internal presentation, or the pink/blue indicators displayed by the machine caused some trans people to be disproportionately selected for pat-downs due to the result of the scan. |

I know some wounded warriors who have been told to place prosthetics on the belt. Never mind that they have to almost strip to remove them. One guy wears his $$$$$ carbon fiber cheetah to avoid the harassment. What's funny is the people with clear disabilities often have an easier time explaining what's going on."Hey, I have a prosthesis, I need to leave it on so I can walk through. Can I have a pat down?" That's still no reason to be given a hard time- but for so many people, seeing is believing, and they can "see" the problem. The people with "invisible" or not readily apparent diseases/disabilities often have to make a real case for themselves. For example: my very healthy looking, young, and otherwise capable college friend has a pacemaker. Again, something that's sensitive to xrays and etc. She gets constant hassle because people straight up don't believe her (in the DoC we call this the "But You Don't Look Sick" complex). For diabetics, you've got to couple that with RAMPANT misunderstandings in society about what T1 and T2 diabetes are, how they're caused, how they're treated, and the incorrect, ignorant and really rather annoying assumption that diabetics "did this to themselves" and you can have a real fight on your hand. (And no, your suggestion that I just "eat cinnamon! it cures diabetes!" is not helpful, Mr TSA agent. Unless the cinnamon you buy has beta cells in it...in which case, hook me up). |

I assume if your mom, girlfriend, or boss said something you disagreed with you tell them they are totally incorrect, ignorant and uninformed? Incorrect = not correct. I tell people that they (or something they say) are (is) incorrect all the time. Ignorant = lacking knowledge of a topic. Again, not an insult. As a matter of fact I actually used the word ignorant to describe my knowledge of a topic just the other day. I certainly was not insulting myself. uninformed = lacking information. Where is the insult there? If they think that these machines cause cancer then they are lacking information. Now, if someone perceives my pointing out their being incorrect, ignorant, or uninformed on a particular topic as an insult, well that's just not my problem.
