Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013 - OPEN nicol1 - 2013-05-04 3:16 AM I would like to join! NAME: nicol1 / Nicol STORY: I'm 42 and recently relocated from Frederick, MD To New Braunfels, TX. I have done several sprint distance over the past 10+ years. In 2011 while training for my 1st Int'l distance I discovered I had gallstone and needed to have surgery. Last year again while training for my 2nd attempt at Int'l distance I realized my back pain was far worse than I thought and had to have surgery. I'm now 9 months past my surgery and am again training for my 1st Int'l distance tri. FAMILY STATUS: Married for almost 17 years to a wonderfully supportive husband. No kids but hope to have a dog or 2 as our future children. CURRENT TRAINING: I'm currently following one of the free International distance plans. THIS YEAR'S RACES: Rockin R - Spring Tri (May 19) Gruene, TX Small Texas Int'l Tri (July 28), Boerne, TX Kerrville Int'l Tri (Sept 29), Kerrville, TX Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon (Nov17) San Antonio, TX BODY COMPOSITION: Over the past 7 months I have lost 45 lbs and I'm 10 lbs away from my goal weight. Along with training I need to also focus on strength training to build muscle and keep my back and core strong to help prevent future back problems. Nicol Welcome, Nicol! Wow, those are some serious accomplishments. We have a few Manatees, myself included, that have gone through the cholecystectomy thing. And several of us do various forms of strength training as well, for different reasons. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013 - OPEN So, you think keeping me busy in the other thread would keep me from finding you and re-upping? Ha, found ya! NAME: amd723/ Ann-Marie STORY: I've been active/ athletic my whole life, but always thought of running as the necessary evil to compete in other sports. Running was not a sport, in fact I hated running. Then in 2008 I decided to run a marathon and somewhere along the way became hooked. Two years later I did my first triathlon. The first season I only did sprints, the second and third seasons I added a HIM. My A race this year is another HIM. I also need to get back to running marathons as, for various reasons (usually involving injury), I haven't done one in 3 years. I think. FAMILY STATUS: Single, although I guess i could say that like Janyne I'm married to my dog Most of the tris I do I do with 2 of my brothers. Sometimes a sister and/or SIL participate too. CURRENT TRAINING: Right now I'm running 4 days a week, swimming 2x/ week and biking just enough to allow me to do a couple of spring sprint tris. The end of June will start my HIM training, so this will change going forward THIS YEAR'S RACES: So far I've done a Spartan Race, a 10k, a classic distance tri and come Sunday (5/5) a sprint tri. 2013 RACES: In addition to the above, I'm signed up for another sprint and the REV3 Venice Half. |

I was on the road to some heavy health problems & decided I didn't want to go there. I've shed a bit over 50 lbs through a structure weight management program. That program put me on the fitness path and I'm digging it! Other than marching band in high school, I've never been anywhere close to athletic in my life. I had a friend jokingly (I'm sure) mention I should consider triathlon in March when I was hitting a workout slump and the idea has stuck.FAMILY STATUS: Married to my 2nd grade BFF for almost 23 years, childless by choiceCURRENT TRAINING: Workout schedule since 2011 has been 45 min - 1hr each of strength & cardio 2-3 times per week. I had slacked off of that for the first part of this year, but after the Tri bug was put in my ear, April had that schedule. I also started a beginners swim class in April (did I mention I don't know how to swim?!). I started the 16 week swim focused training plan from this site on Monday.THIS YEAR'S RACES: I'm signed up to do the Pink Power Sprint on August 18 in Richmond.BODY COMPOSITION: still looking to lose another 10-15 lbs.I hope I can get in on some mentoring as I couldn't be more of a newbie if I tried! I've been "lurking" on the site for a few weeks and spotted both you & Jen (comments) in different forums/race reports. Hoping to connect with you in the future to see if we can chat more re: your opinion on RMS! We don't have much good to say about it. Unfortunately, she tries to be all things to all people and winds up overextending her resources. I think Jen has done Pink Power, that's one I haven't done. My favorite RMS race is Tavern but she moved the weekend and it falls when I am on vacation this year. Courses are sometimes not the best laid out and border on really unsafe conditions. She's good for some serious hills on the bike courses and if I'm not mistaken there are a couple good ones for Pink Power too. The easiest course she has is Power Sprint but the wait for appropriate seeded times is not fun. GLOW run sounds fun. I'm liking the odd-ball events. Last year Jen and I did Dauber Dash at Henricus Historical Park. That was a blast!! I love Sportsbackers races but they only do single sport events. |

Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013 - OPEN Alright, alright...took a break from posting due to dad health craziness (this is different from normal dad craziness--that has NOT changed...he's still silly.), school, and a detoxing from caffeine (yay me!), but I am back now. NAME: kgore/Kate STORY: I am a zookeeper, a triathlete, and an OCR (obstacle course racing) addict. I enjoy conquering my inner "you can't do this" monologue by doing tris...I suck...truly...bottom ten is where I live in these races! My background in athletics is all over the board, I was pretty busy growing up, and super competitive. I lost interest in doing much active stuff for a bit, and realized three years ago, that I was fat, depressed, and BORED! I wanted to do a mountain bike race, and instead found a wee little triathlon called the Auburn Triathlon....I chose the mini distance, learned how to swim, worked with a coach, and finished it 6th from last....I then found out that that race is considered to be one of the hardest courses of any distance in the area....and also that I have exercise induced asthma--which is most adversely affected during my swim... FAMILY STATUS: Married to a long suffering pool guy...I am really lucky; he's hot, he makes enough to support us (and my racing habit), and he puts up with my whining. Oh yeah, he also cooks the BEST steaks EVER. CURRENT TRAINING: My training this year has been not so good. Its my senior semester in college, my dad is having potentially fatal health issues, and its been kinda stress-y at work...In any case, as of today, I am back on track--training towards this year's Auburn Tri--Olympic distance this year--I predict another mediocre place, but I know I can finish. THIS YEAR'S RACES: hoo boy.... yah, just look at my home page on here...too many to write...
2013 RACES: again--look at my home page...3 tris, multiple OCRs, and one 1/2 Marathon... BODY COMPOSITION: I would like to lose another 30 pounds or so, but I am cool with 15-20...Okay, I just want to look a bit leaner....well....WHATEVER....I just want to have fun racing!
Apart from that, I like to be entertained by the pod, share all my issues, get good advice, and occasionally post photos of my animals from work (sometimes geckos, just to mess with Yanti ) |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013 - OPEN Ummmm....this is still the promised "tomorrow", right? NAME: 4agoodlife/Erin STORY: I'm a 37y/o SAHM taking a break to be with my young kids(boy 5, girl 2) after 12 years of teaching. I've always been active and enjoy participating in most sports. A couple of years ago my husband caught his tri bug, but I poo-poo'd it...no time, too hard to schedule two racing parents, poor swimmer, etc. My boy started Kindergarten in August, and for the first couple of months I found myself at various times telling him "How will you know until you try?" and "Don't give up. Keep trying." Silly mom. After finally listening to myself, I told my husband that I was ready to try for my first tri. So I got in the pool at the beginning of October to start training for a sprint at the beginning of November. I only have that tri under my belt so far...my second is this weekend. Since the beginning of 2012, I've run 3 HMs and various 5ks. So far I am enjoying the challenge and variety that working/training in S/B/R gives me. FAMILY STATUS: I'm going on 9 years of marriage to Jason. My little family includes two crazy kids, 3 mutts and a cat. (If you weren't around last time be prepared for lots of pics ) CURRENT TRAINING: After getting my first road bike a couple of months ago, I've been putting in 1-1.5 hours on trainer in the afternoons. Running is usually in the evenings and on the weekend. Swimming can only be squeezed in on Wednesday and Friday nights due to school and gym scheduling. I've added strength and core work 2-3 times a week. THIS YEAR'S RACES: In 2012 my "big" races were RnR Phoenix HM, IMS HM, and my sprint tri. 2013 RACES: So far I've done Peoria HM and Pat's Run. This weekend is Esprit de She Super Sprint. Depending on how this OWS goes, I'd like to do the Tempe International Tri Sprint in a couple of weeks. There is another sprint in my future during the summer, but I haven't decided which one yet. The local sprint that took my tri virginity is scheduled for November again. I'm on the verge of deciding on trying for an Oly by the end of the year BODY COMPOSITION: hahaha! The Madagascar song lyrics "I like 'em round, I like 'em chunky" just popped into my head. Maybe because I ate cookie dough ice cream a few minutes ago? |

Expert 4921 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013 - OPEN More bio on athletic history and body composition: I spend most of my 20s playing competitive sports, mainly beach volleyball. Got just good enough to get my A$$ kicked by elite players on the beach...just not athletic enough and everybody's my height (6'3") and above at that level. So, Karch Kiraly I wasn't. Kept me is really good shape, though. I trained 7-9 hours a week and then played outdoors all weekend. Plus all my friends and I competed in every stupid sport imaginable: softball, indoor and outdoor soccer, flag football, basketball. So this kept me in pretty good shape. Then I got married. And then divorced. And then fat. Competitive sports were pretty much off the radar. Then I met my wife...she was fitness nut. Got up at 4 a.m. to workout two hours before work. Yikes...who the heck does that??? So, I started working out again, but with no real goal. Got married again (this one stuck!) and we had our daughter about a less than a year later and then the training slowed down again. Weight crept up to about 225/230 at the end of 2006. That's when I said "I'm doing a half marathon next year". I had never raced anything longer than a 10K and that was in high school. Dropped about 15 lbs and finished in 2:02ish. Had to have surgery to remove a vein from my left leg (chronic vein insufficiency). Started running more, and the next two years dropped my HM time to 1:54ish. My wife had done three of the Danskin triathlons (including Seattle...there were like 6K women in this race...CRAZY!!), so I decided to give it a go. But I was awful at swimming. Not like couldn't get to the end of the pool, but not fast and not much endurance. I used Shane's (gsmcleod) beginner swimming program and it got me through my first tri (at about 2:50/100y...my wife was about to come look for me ). I had a great bike split for a hybrid and ran a PR 5K. I was hooked. Also dropped 4 min of my HM time. Started training like crazy in 2011..then the injury train started. First a bike crash, then my left knee (surgery Aug 2011 which didn't fix anything). Back injury in Dec 2011 (acute spondylolisthesis). I was a bit of a mess...the back injury was really debilitating. Then I started swimming again, and often. Then a cortisone shot...and then another, and my back started healing. I started adding things...cycling first, then incline walking, and eventually running again this past fall. So I'm about back. Though my body hurts to one degree or another fairly often. I have a great chiro who keeps Humpty Dumpty together for the most part. My weight fluctuates around 200, which is probably about 5-7 pounds off my ideal race weight but my wife would probably divorce me if I got that skinny. I'd like to move the little bit of belly fat up north, if ya know what I mean, though. Well, enough about me, me, me, for now. Looks like a fun group. |
