i was in the group as a 58 year old last year and remember starting at around 8:30 or so,,long wait but like the fact that it wasn't crowded out there. it was warm on the run but ok....
I am staying in the French quarter, same as last year,,within walking distance from Armstrong Park. staying at Place d Armes near Jackson Square,,so my wife monitors my whereabouts on the course and walks to the finish in do time to be there when i finish.

Great race and looking forward to #2.

How big a hassle is it to get from the French Quarter to the marina?

That's my understanding, line up by wave but start every :05 or so.   I also heard some people got in the water at 9 ish, which would indeed suck.   Hopefully they've worked on that

Yeah, they put two of us in the water every 3-5 seconds last year. I was in the M35-39 AG and we went out right after the pros, if memory serves. But there were other waves that didn't get in until hours later. Must have made for a warm run.

After a long lay off and a bit of elliptical/treadmill work, finally back on an outdoor running schedule.  Time to bump up the swimming and especially running so I make it all the way back to the french quarter!

I am interested in this question as well, since we have to get there Saturday to drop everything off, and we won't be renting a car (and tri bike transport is dropping bikes off at the riverside hyatt, not transition, so we have to lug our bikes too....).  Sunday I understand there is a race day athlete shuttle, but my wife will be there and will want to get to the start too.  And then back for the finish......   And then back to transition after the race....  and then back to the quarter......

Been trying to ignore this part, and I knew it going in, but it's kind of a logisitical PITA.

Intensity is starting to pick up.  I forgot what it's like to be tired most of the time.  LOL.

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm like 'dang why am I toasted at work everyday', and then I remember..

anyone out there that has done this race - how bad is this 'headwind' people speak of? In the great state of TX I routinely had winds where I couldn't hold 15mph in to them. I assume these aren't like that? Just enough to make the watts jump?

Here is the thing. Yes there is a headwind on the way out to the turn around, but you get the tailwind back home Nothing too bad. I didn't use a power meter, and kept telling myself to just bear with it as best as possible and catch the JetStream on the way back.

You can read my race report if you'd like. I think I averaged 17 out and 23 back, for what that's worth.

There is a short, narrow bridge that has a pretty rough surface near the turn around, so be sure that your bottles are secured.

Coming off a foot injury so running is now ramping up.  Bike and swim are good.

Did Miami 70.3 headwind out, tailwind back.  THose courses are fun!

I am assuming the run is relatively flat, maybe a few rollers?  Looks like it goes over a bridge but that's about it

As long as you're disciplined enough to go slow into the headwind and not overcook it, yeah those courses are a blast.

All it takes is doing it once.  Overcooked the heck out of my first HIM (Austin) and I'll NEVER do it again.  That run was sooo painful

Sorry it took me a while to respond.
Not a hassle from the French Quarter to the Marina.. From where I am staying on St.Ann close to Jackson Square, I just had to drive to that street Armstrong Park is on turn right and out to a highway, over a bridge and I was there,,,can't remember how far,, seems like 8 minutes or so..

Oh if only that was true. I've done it a couple times. Posted some blazing fast bike splits followed by a zombie shuffle. I too am hoping that the PM will keep me from blowing my lid..

Training was going well for me until a dog took me out on my bike ride 9 days ago. Kneecap pain has kept me from running since then, will try to get back going again this week. I hate it when my momentum is killed like that.

I heard the water was frigid last year. As a cold weenie who races at about 142 pounds, I think that is what I fear most.

People keep saying it was cold...but then they say mid 60s. If you're in a wetsuit, I feel like mid 60s is an AWESOME temp. It'll help with fast swim times too. Without a wetsuit it might be chilly..

Ah but lets take Houstonians.  We race in 80* water almost year round, maybe a race at the beginning of the year and the end.

Touche. You gotta learn to love the cold instead of that swimming pool water!

Looks like I'm visiting N.O. as Galveston just sold out. What the best approach to managing this without a PM? I've never done a 70.3 before so there will be lots of experimenting for me.

Do you race by HR then?  You should be pacing just under your threshold for a 70.3.

They released the participant list. Only 1560 registered! They didn't put peoples ages on there though...so no way for me to stock my competition on athlinks

Any word on any changes from the 2013 course?   Website seems to infer it.  Also any idea whether swim waves will be same as last year, or new procedure, etc?

I haven't heard anything...and I keep checking for updates. I doubt they'll change the swim course...and I heard the run was a good(ish) route.

Truth be told I hope they change the way we enter the water so I'm not one of the last dang people headed out on the course.
