I bought a Look 496 Tri and LOVE IT! Its fast, stiff nut not too stiff and can handle my weight (225)

Not all carbon is created equal, either. Trek OCLV carbon (which in itself comes in like 4 grades) is massively strong and is subjected to the equivalent of 250 pounds bouncing around on it for the equivlent of 10,000 miles or something crazy like that, during the testing process. I feel very confident about it. I ride a LeMond Zurich which is carbon on the seat tube and top tube, and steel in the head tube and down tube. Super comfy ride.

My "beater" is a 1991 Specalized Epic - one of the early carbon frames with aluminum lugs. I've ridden that at weights from 220 to 182 and back up to 250, and no problemo on the frame.

So I think the whole "carbon's not for Clydes" thing is a myth, personally.

I'm late. Glad to see you picked a sweet bike. The owner of the shop I just left has a stable of all carbon bikes. Giant and Specialized and road and cross from both companies. He weighs in at 250 something.

Mine would have 105 on it though. I guess not sure how I feel but then again if I upgrade the rear derailer to dura ace and if it 10 speed I can put on my ultera rear cassette easy I can pretty much make it something better.

I bought a Fuji Team Issue, carbon frame bike, and I've had no problems. I started at 260lb and I'm down to around 230 now. It definitely does sway a bit on the trainer, but I don't notice anything (but a smooth ride) on the road.

Now I'm getting ready to outfit it with some type of aero bars and some better wheels. Any suggestions, particularly if I want to spend < $1000 before my race in March?

I ride a Specialized Roubaix comp double (full carbon). When I got it I was at about 240#. Now 4000 miles later it's going strong and I'm at about 220.

One major caution -- I did snap the carbon fiber seatpost! I hit a little dip in the road (not a hole), and felt something crack. Specialized replaced it free, but I changed to a Thomson Elite (aluminum) post to be on the safe side.

The issue I have is that Carbon has a life - some at the bike shop say 2 years depending on how much you ride - I have also had issues with Carbon - with my areo bars - they had a crack and had to be replaced - thank god the guy at the shop saw the "hair line crack".  The other issue is if you do crash you better get it inspected -

Some Bike MFG's do not recommend a person over 200 to ride Carbon (I am 210 - 6'1" - I do know that Trek will does not have that issue, but I feel better riding my Griffen - That being said the Carbon bikes are cool, but I will stay with my B4C Griffen.

When I was weighing about 150-160 (many moons ago) I used to race a custom made carbon fiber bike and even at my weight I cracked the frame only after having it 6-8 months....was a real bummer  - had to order another bike and was unable to ride for a few weeks - - so, NO I do not recommend carbon fiber for any over 200 if not less. Luckily I was only out on a leisure ride and not out racing when it cracked. There are many aluminum frames that are great - plus, many nice used bikes from people upgrading....you may have luck that way. Good luck!

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm buying a tri bike and it never occurred to me that I may have a problem because I'm an Athena (214). The bike I'm getting is a Cannondale Six 13 Slice tri-bike. I got on it (on the trainer) and felt so good. Didn't feel like "Oh, this is too tiny..." It felt great. I didn't test drive it on the road though but I think this one will work for me. Incidentally it has a carbon fork.

I am 200+ and have  a fully carbon QR Lucero and have had no issues. Went through a very repitable bike shop that sells to a lot of pros and he said my weight would not be an issue. Hopefully by next summer my weight won't be an issue Wink

I would agree. I bought my Kestrel Talon back in 1999 when it came out, been riding it since.

I was 298lbs in December '06 and been riding consistently all this year with over 2100 miles this year and bike doing great. Now down to my 230's after the holiday.

Praying that it last me another 2 years while I save $$'s to replace it as it is going to be 10yrs in 2009. Wow! Not as long as my first bike which I rode for 18yrs, but not bad.
