I live down the street from the lake so if anyone needs anything at the last minute I can get it for you. I am riding El Tour too! My boyfriend is doing it too (he has done it several times before and placed 2nd in the 75 mile ride a few years ago), but I am guessing he is just going to rocket ahead of me and not wait for my slowpokey self. I am regularly down in Tucson and have been doing a lot of riding there - it sure beats the crap out of riding around Phoenix. |

Wellcome to BT and our crazy little AZ corner of the BT world! Wet suit or no wet suit. THAT is the question. Actually it is pretty easy to answer for me. IF I want to not drown in OW, my butt better be in a wet suit. I need that flotation!!! However, if you are a super stud swimmer and don't need it, you may use water temp as the determining factor. If the water is still warm, you may not want it. BUT, if they allow them in a race, I still don't really understand why people don't wear them because they help you so much. To each their own, I guess. (I am waiting for Harry to chime in behind me, as he always has better words of wisdom than any of us!) |

SOMA will be my first, and I was originally planning on not wearing one... but it is in late October and very early in the morning, so I've reconsidered. Take that with a grain of salt, though, because I haven't swam with one before so I don't know how it will affect your stroke. |

For the Timex a month before, wetsuits were not legal (just barely - it was a race-morning announcement). I would expect them to be legal at Soma again this year, and if so, there is no question for me - I'll be wearing one. |

Like Brian said, a month before SOMA it's not wetsuit legal, and for SOMA it can get into the 60s. The 1/2 is my goal race for the year to get me cruising into IMAZ training. |

This race is wetsuit legal. So if they change it on race day morning.........I will not be a happy camper, and will be the only one in a wetsuit, as I will do it but not be able get an official time. |

Makes my first open water swim freakout that much more understandable. Bottom line is, for Timex have a contingency plan - it will be close one way or the other. Soma is very likely to be a wetsuit race as it is a month later. |

Unless between now and Timex I am amazingly able to pull magic out of my butt and actually swim in OW under my own power without all the OW drowning daemons in my head taking over....yeah....I will be the dork in the WS. BUT I would rather do that and finish the whole race and get times for ME rather than just dropping out and wasting the money. Not like I am vying for 1st place or anything, so why do I care whether my swim time is officially counted or not. Drowning is is a much worse fate! |

| Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Soma You've got 2 months to get there. If you can swim 1500 meters in a wet suit, you can swim 1500 meters without one. They don't provide THAT much more bouyancy, you can do it, just take it slow. Go out to Saguaro and swim out to one bouy and back w/out it. Then try to swim along the beach in the shallow water. Baby steps.  |

I am going to get my boyfriend (who has done high altitude search and rescue before) to bring his kayak while I go flail around in Saguaro Lake one of these days... I will let you know when this happens if you want to come along. I'm sure he will be glad to toss you a floatie or let you hang on to the side of the boat gasping too if need be! |
