We've got 50+ doing a group ride of the IMKY bike course this Saturday.  Meeting at the Yellow Lot at 9am and riding at 9:30am Sharp.  The Yellow Lot is 1/4 mile east on River Road from the Tumbleweeds Restaurant (IMKY swim start) and the address of Tumbleweeds is 1201 River Road, Louisville, KY 40602.  Full SAG provided along with water, Gatorade, bananas, peanut buttter, energy bars.  Participants can choose to do one LaGrange loop (approximately 80 miles) or the full 112 mile IM distance (two LaGrange loops).  SAG donation of $10 requested.  If you are interested send an email to Bob Baney at [email protected] .  We also have a 300 person group over on www.iamtri.com where group rides will be announced.  Other group rides planned for June 12, July 10 and July 31 (swims in the Ohio River will be incorporated into the later rides from 8-9am).  Come join us but please let me know if you plan to ride so we can plan our SAG supplies accordingly.

crazyalaskian - 2010-05-02 8:20 PM Alright.  I'm in.  This month is going to be a little weird because I've got a 4-day swim meet that I don't want to suck at so I know some stuff will have to be cut.

Swim: 13 hr
Bike: 28 hr
Run: 22 hr

Totals (Through May 15th)
S: 6 hrs
B: 15.75 hrs
R: 10 hrs

So pretty much on track but I've got a weird week of training ahead of me.  I think I'll need to do a significant amount of training memorial day weekend.

jayg - 2010-05-17 8:46 PM For those of you who have not done this race before or have not had the awesome opportunity to ride the course.

I road the course last weekend from the Green Lawn through loop one and back. 85 miles total and I had my handed to me! I posted a good description on my blog.

You are leaning me more towards opting not to race with the disc and go with trispokes only.

I would say minimum is 40-45%. I was over my handle bars, out of my saddle and in my small chain ring and on my 26 tooth gear doing about 4-5 mph. As I reached the top I was shifting my weight to make it. Needless to day I am getting a 28 cog.

I used a 12-27 in 2008 and plan on using the same this year.  The 27 will help with spinning up some the longer/steeper hills.  YMMV

Man.. feeling DRAINED lately.

Worse yet, a weird knee pain is back during long runs.. need to sort that out.

Seems like everyone else is tired too.. This first IM stuff is intense!

Good luck with the knee.  I'm battling knee issues also.  Very frustrating.  As far as the fatigue goes, you just have to hang on.  Make sure you are eating well and getting plenty of sleep.  Wait until July & early August and you'll know what fatigue really is when you are in the thick of the super heavy training volume.

I was feeling drained as well and wound up with a nasty chest infection. I am lucky enough to have a coach and he made me rest. The idea is to be 100% now so I can build for the future. It has been really difficult to cut back on the training, but I guess recovery is more important. This is my first year having a coach and it has been an adjustment. My volume is nowhere near what many are up to right now and my run training is at a really easy pace.

I'm not going to argue with him b/c I've already achieved two of my goals for the year. One was to go under 5 hours in a 70.3 (Amazing how much proper pacing makes a huge difference). The other goal was to average sub 6 min/miles in a race, which I did at my first sprint race of the year. Strange how going slower and training less has made me faster.

That's why my training plan is having me do too.  I don't have as many miles logged as everyone else has posted, and most workouts are in, or supposed to be in, a recovery HR zone.

I was starting to feel drained but I got a good rest day in which included mental rest.  Normally during rest days I'll try to work extra or throw in a bunch of chores, but this time I let it all go and just rested mind and body; best idea ever!

I'm tired and hungry like everyone else.  Training is getting done (only missed one swim workout).  Most sessions are not at an all out efforts so I actually feel good once I get up and moving in the am.  Getting moving is the hard part though.

So far this month here are my totals:

Bike:14h 27m  - 245 Mi
Run:5h 24m 20s  - 35.58 Mi
Swim:6h 50m  - 17876.52 M
Strength:3h 20m

I think I'm more or less on track to hit my goals. I missed one run workout this month due to playing in a golf tournament for the day. I thought I gave that hobby up?  Who has time for golf anymore when you're training for an Ironman?

Anybody else feel like they're eating all of the time?  And tired most of the time?  It hasn't even begun to get tough yet, either.  I am going to be counting on all of you for some motivation and support from time to time.

I sure am looking forward to that finish line...

I completely agree with the 8% max.  I rode the course last year and there is nothing as steep as the local ball-buster hill here in Ellicott city.  It's a 12% grade for the first .21 miles and 9% grade over .8 miles.  NOTHING on the IMKY course was that steep.  It's all rolling.

Let's not freak anyone out with rumors of 45-50% grade!

I rode a 12/25 on the course and was fine.  Granted, I only rode the course and didn't run afterward so for the IM I'll be switching to my 12/27.

OK maybe 40-50% was much but there is a steep climb right as you make the turn. I will film the ride this Sunday and post the video on my youtube channel. Here is the adjusted description for now.

-Turn right (north) onto Old Sligo Rd

(I had my A double S handed to me again!! Right turn into a very steep, maybe  (45-50%) OK, more than 10% but less than 50% grade climb. Out of saddle all the way. Old Sligo is 1.6 miles with about a 8% grade over the distance. There is a short steep climb as you turn onto Old Sligo I don't have a device to measure the incline but I will film the ride on my next loop)

Nice job on the training.

About your statement regarding golf . . .  That is my job.  I am a golf professional.  I certainly don't play as well or as much as I used to.  IM takes it's toll.  Actually, there are two PGA golf professionals doing IMLOO (me and a buddy of mine).  Goes to show that, although many golf pros sit around, drink beer and get fat, not all of us do!

Well, we're down to double digits....99 days and counting.

Is everyone comfortable with where their training plan is taking them? Anyone doubting their plan?

the volume of training is increasing steadily here......I think that if my blushing bride knew then what she knows now (in terms of training volume and time required), I don't think that she would have agreed so readily to my pursuit of the Iron-dream.

Just keep telling (lying to) yourself that after this is done, you'll spend twice as much time with everyone you just blew off to do this self centered endeavour.  That seems to work until it's over.  Refer to my MAY 13th post when I was feeling this way.....
