Cheese gang. I stay away for a couple of days and you have quadrupled out page count. I can see this is going to be even harder to keep up with than last time ..

Hope everyone is doing well and having a great week.

kickitinok - 2009-12-15 11:18 AM Hey everyone - I have nothing to add to the present conversation because I'm a true "beginner." However, I do HAVE to listen to my ipod when spinning. Anything else and I get bored.

I have a question for all you experts: I've been reading a lot about delaying the running portion of your training program if you have a lot of weight to lose. I am kind of feeling not too comfortable while running (jogging) right now, as I've currently got a lot of junk bouncing around (lol!), and I certainly don't want to injure myself!! I have 50lbs to lose. What do you guys think would be the best approach for me regarding the run? Should I concentrate on my swim, bike, and diet right now then add running in the last 8-10 weeks of my training program? Is that enough time? (Training for a sprint only)

Also, I neeeeeeed a good diet plan. If I'm going to delay my running training, I need to make sure that I lose weight in the interim. Will the increased swimming and cycling be enough, or do I need to make sure I'm on a strict diet also? If so, anyone have ideas on diets?

On that note: I've lost 3 pounds since last week!

My slightly tardy response however I would say to continue to put some running into your training. It will help with your weight loss as you will use more energy running than either of the other two disciplines. Just be careful not to over od it and get hurt.

OK so I am up to page 11 now and have to go back to work. Had our last swim session with the tri group here on Tuesday and we had a blast. It was fun night and we just played a bunch of different games. I think we may have actually worked harder than in the previosu weeks. Several relays and a modified water polo. Only drank a little pool water. We also played a water version of "what time is it Mr Wolf. Hard to get a good start retreating from a treading postion especially when the Wolf get s push off the wall.

Anywho as I said back to work.  Later gang.

Sounds great. Lets post our race numbers when they come out. I think we should keep "official" lists of swmbkrun MG '10 members participating in: 1) Lonestar, 2) Nations Tri, and 3) Augusta (Feel free to add more if there are numbers to merit a list).

Lonestar                   Nations                       Augusta

Ashort33                   Trying1                       Jeepguy2358

Sam                                                             Tracy

Feel free to copy paste and add your name where appropriate!

I am adding a ROAD TRIP TO PENTICTON:

Ryan

(only 1 reason to roadtrip---- 2 sign up 2011)

Add me to the Penticton list

If I can get my training lined up enough to make me think I can manage IM hours next year, I will go to Penticton too!!

So I had a fun morning today.

Went to the Dr. to see if my kids had given me pink eye, nope but have basically a cold in my eyes and am not supposed to wear my contacts for a week.  My current glasses are 10 years old and are held together with string and a bent sewing pin.

Also they told me I need to go to my regular Dr. because they think I have High Blood pressure.

YAY ME!

Bike peeps.

I've learned how to clean the ride (pathetic. i know)  Now I want to start learning more about my bike, how it works (yes Trevor that whole pedal thing..i got it), how to fix things when i break em', etc...  I'll most likely be renting wheels for Lone Star so thinking I'll start with something easy like swapping out cassettes.

Questions to start with.

Sources.  I know about Sheldon Brown.  Any other good sources.  I see youtube has lots on there but i have no clue whats good and whats not.  Also it doesn't have to be online.  Books are cool.

Tools. OK to buy used tools or should I stick w/ new.  for example a chain whip.

It seems everyone is checking BP now.  When I go to the dentist they check my BP before they clean my teeth.  I will be pissed if they ever send me home with out a cleaning because they think my BP is too high!

kickitinok - 2009-12-17 11:37 AM Hola Group -

I actually saw some progress on my run yesterday. Very happy about that...was starting to wonder.

I have also decided that I want to do Lonestar this April. It gives me exactly four months to train (plus the three weeks I already have under my belt Do you guys think that four months is long enough for me to train for my first sprint? I know people have recommended an indoor swim sprint for my first, but I'm having difficulty finding any around me until September. Given this, what do you recommend that I do to get used to the open water? Go to a lake and swim the distance a few times a couple of weeks before the sprint?

Also - I need a road bike. I've been riding a hybrid and I love it, but I need something raceworthy. I don't want to purchase a Tri bike until I know that I will be continuing with the Tri's. I do know that I love cycling and will definitely be doing that for a long time. For the tris I just plan on getting the clip-on tri handlebars. So...anyone have any suggestions for a good road bike? I'd like to spend under $1000 if possible.

I have a Trek 1.2 and I got it for under $1000.  I love it and would recommend it.  It is stock except for a different seat (Adamo) and I use Speedplay Zero pedals.

Steve

x2 on the Zinn books.  All3Sports and several other on-line Tri stores have some videos that are real good for the basics.  Park tools also offeres classes that are help at a TON of LBS's.  There is usually a charge for these but they are well worth the price.  I also think there are some good videos here on BT...if I remember right...I am REAL old though so that may not be the case.

Just finished a 5 mile run.  Under 50 minutes with no walk breaks...Woo Hoo!!  I did my one and only marathon last January (Disney) using the Galloway run/walk method and it worked great.  My time was terrible but there other factors that lead to that.  This time my goal is to run the distance and if I absolutely have to walk it will be at the water stops ONLY.  That is the plan and that is the way I am going about my training.

Real excited about the training and hope we have a mild winter here so that I can keep up the schedule.....and YES, I know the winters in Atlanta are nothing compared to you guys up north but I make no apologies.  I am a wuss when it comes to the cold.  Spent 30 years as a fireman and was cold all of the time from Nov.-Feb. and now that I don't HAVE to be cold...I'm NOT gonna be.

I'm really looking forward to reading about Lonestar from this group.  That race is on my short list as a destination race for maybe 2011 so I look forward to hearing all about it from our group.

Of course getting this group to come out of their shell and post anything is hard enough.

LOL, no it was a regular doctor, but they told me not to wear my contacts, which would mean I have to wear my glasses which are really old and will look pretty funny.

John, Zin is the way to go to start with.  Bicycletutor.com and parktools.com have great video's if you need to see how things are done vs. just reading.

The park tool class is also good as someone else mentioned.  A guy I work with took it and said it was well worth the money.

I built my bike up from the Zin books and the 2 video sites I posted.
