Yes you are in trouble Nicole!  Do not and I repeat do not curse me like that!  I think I would have a total meltdown.  In fact I know I would.  You better say some extra prayers for me!  I can't handle that kind of added stress!

Nicole83 - 2009-12-23 8:36 AM Dude I know, right?  Especially since I've seen a photo of her fantasticly beautiful wedding dress.  There is not room for two in that thing.

Newtons1st - 2009-12-23 9:35 AM OHH you will be in such trouble if you jinx BvD on this one.

Nicole83 - 2009-12-23 8:17 AM Babysitter huh?

Dude, you just made me remember my dream last night.  I totally had a dream that Betsy was pregnant.  And you guys were all stressed out about how the whole wedding thing was going to work.  Haha.  God, I'm even DREAMING about BT.

evondo - 2009-12-23 9:15 AM LOL I wasn't even doing calculations!

My current job is a babysitter for 25-55yr old engineers but technically I'm an electrical engineer.

Nicole83 - 2009-12-23 7:57 AM Eric what do you do for a living?

I feel like I've asked this before but I'm curious.

You must be an engineer.

Or an Algebra professor or something.

I suck so much at numbers every time you go into the caculation stuff my eyes just glaze over.  Haha.

The split talk was very well covered...(and I concur with Eric) I just wanted to say Great pace on the run... to be breaking 7min's/mile is very strong! Great job!

kjivie - 2009-12-22 8:33 PM So I made it a point to negative split on my run today, but I think I was a bit extreme.  It was only a 3 miler but my first mile was 7:27 and my third was 6:14.  I am assuming this is waaay more negative than you guys were talking about.  I guess my question is- as long as I don't overdo it and am able to recover for my next workout, do I really need to pay attention to HR, splits, etc.?

bzgl40 - 2009-12-21 6:12 PM
kjivie - 2009-12-21 3:09 PM

Thanks for your answer, Eric.  I'm going to try the low HR thing and see how it goes.  I could definitely use some injury prevention for a couple of months.

I see an added benefit of developing some patience, too:  I just did a run and tried to keep my HR between 135 and 140.  It felt like I was crawling!

I actually have trouble with this as well.  I tell myself that I am going to take it nice and easy, but by the end of it I am running way too fast.  Maybe I should try taking my HRM on my next run.

One thing that helped me with the running way too fast is to think negative splits.  I make a concentrated effort to not necessarily run slow, but an easy comfortable pace when starting.  I stick with that for probably 10 minutes and then I just find myself naturally speeding up until my run is complete.  Taking that time to go slow actually makes my overall running faster.  It takes a bit to get it nailed but once you do you'll run longer and stronger (and probably faster).

I am not a huge fan of running with my heart rate monitor.  I find it way to distracting.  And although I run with a Garmin I also pretty much ignore it as well.  I do glance at mileage from time to time since I wing most my routes but if you pay attention to pace and mile splits, etc you just get to tense worrying about the numbers.  After the run is when you analyze all that.

Crap!
Now I  have to go and buy that Garmin. How else can I tell what my pace is on my routes?

Yeah get a Garmin... I think the 305 is well worth the investment.  The 310xt is great I am sure and has it's benefits, but for the price and training value the 305 rules the roost!

If you know your routes... measure them out on using your vehicle, bike or computer programs like favoriterun.com or mapmyrun.com... check your time/splits at each mile of the course.  There are split guides available on sites like coolrunning.com

Good luck!

Weight training, yah or nay?  I think I found the right group for sure for motivation, seems like a fair amount of you lift weights of some form or other.  Seems to be fairly split on if weight lifting improves performance or not, prevents injury or not, and whatever else.  I am a fan of weights cause I find I just like the look of being toned vs just skinny.  I also feel that it helps me injury wise.  I noticed more aches and pains, especially in the knee area, if I do not lift.  I find that it balances out some of the muscle imbalances that just happen.

Wondering what motivates others to lift or why folks feel they need not lift?  Even with or without weights.  Even if your just using your own body weight to me that is still lifting.  You can still get a very good muscle workout that way.

One thing I know I need to concentrate on more is my core.  I do it from time to time and I can tell when I am consistent with it.  And then for some reason I get lazy on it and all hell breaks lose (literally and figuratively).

+1 on the Garmin.  I love mine.  I use it on the bike as well.  I am hoping to destroy mine soon though and get the 310xt

I say YAY on the lifting/strength training!  I do circuit style workouts, where I do not concentrate on one or two muscle groups per session.  This type of approach helps strength as well as muscular endurance.  I will work shoulders, back, chest, bi's, tri's, traps, & lats - at least two exercises per muscle with 3 sets/10-15 reps each... depending on the exercise.
I like doing push-ups and dips and have seen improvements in my swim from doing them!  Pull stronger in the water.

Yeah, core hurts the most... I do a little core each time, but not nearly what I should.  I have a copy of P90X Ab Ripper X ~ I have done the full workout once.... holy pain fest!  Since I have only done portions of it!

New year resolutions will include at least one full Ab Ripper X workout a week & cutting down (maybe even out) carbonated beverages! (with an occasional exception of BEER! )

Considering other resolutions too...  (for future discussions I guess!)

I like this debate and I will argue both sides depending on the person...

I totally agree with the injury prevention and think it comes down to the athlete's body and how they are lifting.  However, I do not think it's the best time spent to become a better swimmer, biker or runner... best way to do that is well swim, bike and run I think of it as an enhancement to current training that if done properly is beneficial. My #1 rule when it comes to lifting is to not lift to the point that your sore legs affect your normal cardio workouts. If it's affecting your cardio workouts lifting becomes a negative in my opinion.

My preference over weight training is getting people to do resistance training... hills, big gear training, pushups, dips, pullups, etc.  Doing this is effectively the same as weight (force) training but keeps the chance of poor execution low and the more force training you do in running/biking the better runner/biker you will become.

I think to weight train or not depends on your limiters. This year I've made the decision to scratch the weight room from my program because I'm already a larger guy and force is not my issue, speed is.  I'll get much more out of another speed run workout than I will in the weight room.  This does not mean I will abandon force/resistance training, I'll continue to do jumps, hills, big gear, pushups and core.
