My recommendation: get familiar with the Hayden portion of the course (the north part). That's where the hills are, and that's where some of the tricky / unsafe parts occur. What do you mean by tricky/unsafe? Lot of turns? Steep descents? I guess I can just find out when I get the course video, but could I get some input? I find the CT courses very accurate. My race times on the CT compared to the actual thing are usually very similar. That sharp right turn does catch you off guard. I almost ended my race on it on the second loop. I started to realize I was going too fast to make the turn and just my slight breaking caused my back tire to skid a bit. It shot over to the opposite side of the road but didnt go off thank goodness. Gladly, my instinct was to let go of the break and pedal like crazy. I guess there is always somebody that ends up in the gravel at that corner. |

Even if you live in a climate you can ride outside year round, having it to virtually ride/watch the course (even if you just watching it while sipping a cold one) is absolutelly invaluable. And, it is only $30! I own the IMLP video (in fact, I think I will ride it this weekend) and to this day I can talk about that course as if I lived on it. Helps with that "visualization" thing "they" keep talking about. For those with computrainers... I bow to you and can only dream... I can vouch that the quality of the Computrainer RCVs are good quality (not HD, but it looks decent). I often hook it up to my 46" LCD TV and the picture looks good. I own IMAZ, IM St. George, Kona, and IMLP videos and they are all good quality. It has been really helpful for my IM Arizona training because, even though I live just minutes of the course, I can really dial in my HR, power, etc. while riding the the AZ course on the CT. As gremlin327 stated it also helps with the visualization aspect. I just ordered CDA, so I'll give my review of this shortly x2 Living in Michigan we'll be seeing "some snow" by the end of October since I have gotten these videos (I have AZ, CDA, Louisville, WI) I find I can sit on trainer probably 4x as long as just a normal spinning ride. |

In the real course video at one point you see a giant Elmo on the side of the road. Random! This year, just as I was cursing the head wind heading back into CDA, There was Elmo! Back for another year. Who knew! One great thing about CDA video is that it was one of the first ones made so they hadnt decided to start in the middle of the pack yet and filmed before the first riders were on the course. It is one of the less action packed videos but it really makes race day seem like time is flying because there is so much going on around you. |

Veteran 227 Brentwood, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I really did. I am sure the Computrainer people get more, but just knowing the turns, the landmarks, etc... was huge for me. The vets will know this but for the first timers the day is soooo long that you need to break it into sections. The videos do that because they have set stop points, so when you actually do the course you almost reverse visualize and think, OK, I am through this or that section of the video. At least I did. I still visualize IMLP as "Out to Keene", "Haselton Road out and back", " Hasleton to Lake Placid", etc... Because it is 2 loops, it breaks it into 6-8 logical 15-25 mile rides. What I did NOT get was a sence of the hills, no way to emulate without CT. they tell you the gears (in reverse order, think 53/11 to emulate uphill and 39/23 to emulate downhill), but until you actually climb a hill 17 miles long, you don't really get it. For 30 bucks it is money well spent. Plus, if you are really enterprising, you can ebay it after and probably get 20 bucks back. On a final note, if you can spend 3 hours in the saddle riding the course on a drainer, or better, watch it twice to emulate 2 loops and sit there for 6 hours, you will be so happy to be outside on race day it will feel like an OLY! |

I'm not sure what the $30 video is that has been mentioned on this thread. (I have the CDA RCV on my list for once long rides start next year) |

You can buy the Racermate CT video if that's what you guys are talking about (http://www.computrainer.com/rm_inc/sales/realcoursevideo_order.html). If you do buy this, you can run the "demo" mode w/o the computrainer (I was doing this the other night with IMSG)... Then you'd use the page up/down key on the keyboard to control your speed (ie pressing page up increases your speed by 5 mph). These videos cost $99 though. RCV software comes with the video. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Yeah some of you are bringing up great points about the CT video. Having a Ct is a huge advantage to work on gearing and knowing all that but also even without a CT it is helpful to see the aid stations and where they are set up. Knowing how far apart and how to plan to have enough but not too much with you. Also nice to see where the crowd support is just for mental notes. Being able to break it down in manageable parts like others have said is huge. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Rode the course on my CT again last night. Is the switchback that we need to have extreme caution on at around mile 22.7 or so? I saw the signs for caution ahead and it looked like it was a tight hairpin turn to the right? I hope I am thinking of the correct one. |

I hope I am thinking of the correct one. I'm not sure about exact mileage, but there is a tight turn to the right followed a little after with a turn to the left and a climb. This is where in my opinion the course really begin. Lot's of climbing from this point on. This is also a hard turn to the left after a good downhill around mile 35ish (?). The good news about this turn is you see it coming from pretty far away. |

Veteran 262 Clarksvile | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It's funny; I watch the video and try to find places around here in Colorado Springs that I think are harder to ride so I can train on. My wife thinks I've lost it especially when I have my laptop with Google maps up and a local area map laid out in front of me trying to war game the local routes and hills best for training.

Master 5557 , California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It's actually easier to pace yourself on the hills in Coeur d'Alene. The flat parts of the course are where the big crowds of spectators are, so it's easy to get fired up and overdo it. |

Yeah I think you're not the only one who has "lost it". On the computrainer it shows the grade. I then go outside with my ergomo computer on my bike that has grade and find hills that have the same grade to guage what CDA will look like. |

Lots of hills at 5.5 or so which the longer climbs seemed to be around that steep. |
