Thanks for the great input on my random questions!  I would definitely much rather go by time than distance.  When I hit that 1:40 on the bike I wanted OFF...didn't want to go another 2.5 miles!  I also think that as my body adjusts I will be pretty close on the time/distance ratio.

I'm glad to hear my butt will feel better eventually!  When I was training for my sprint in the summer, I was outside all the time, so I understand now the difference between riding outside vs trainer riding. I don't remember my butt getting so sore riding outside!

Great info as well on the zones...it seemed to me med-high zone 2 was manageable for the long haul.  I could hold on for a bit in zone three, every once in a while but then would have to come back to Z2.  Glad I am on target with that.

I was able to use my workout today as an example in class.  In our advisory we're talking about goal setting.  I was telling the kids how many times on the bike it got so uncomfortable and difficult I just wanted to quit, but then I realized that the suffering is part of the training.  If my goal is the HIM, I am going to have to be uncomfortable and suffer a bit to reach my goal and that's where too many people quit...at the tough, uncomfortable parts.  They seemed to get the analogy.

srichards428 - 2011-01-03 8:54 PM Iam thinking about attempting a HIM this coming fall.  Does Anybody have any input on nutrition while competing?

Thanks Zee for the input.  I have been thinking about salt tabs but have  not tried them yet.  I sweat profusely when I work out....salt might be a good thing for me.  I would of never thought of eating a snickers bar in a race.  I have not had a candy bar in MONTHS...make that almost a year.  I can taste it now...lol.

ecpasos - 2011-01-04 12:43 PM Hey All,

Heading out for Orlando this afternoon where Walt Disney World Marathon weekend awaits!  Wish me luck.  This is the most running I've ever planned for one single weekend!  My hope is to finish strong and if it feels right get under 4 hrs on the marathon.  I'll be happy just to fhish that darn thing though.

Enjoy your day!

WDW Marathon

Good Luck and have a blast, this race seems like it will be a lot of fun. Under 4 go go go!

Just like to chime in on the nutrition discussion.  Whatever you choose as your nutrition, make sure that you use it when training, practice with it.  That way you can make changes.  As other's have said, it's very individual and what may work for others may not work for you.  Because I have unique nutritional and gastrointestinal issues (Crohn's disease), I've found that keeping things simple works better for me.
Anybody in the group have food allergies or intolerances?   Wheat, dairy, corn, peanuts, nuts, tomatoes  are some of the foods I can't eat.

Swam 1200 drills and swimming this morning @ masters. Hard bike tonight.  3 X 20 mins @ 85% and 50-60 rpm with 3 X 1 min pops of 120% @ 5, 10 and 15 mins into each interval. 90 mins total with warm up and cool down.

ingleshteechur - 2011-01-04 10:06 AM Random questions after my first 'hard' HIM training session:

My plan gives me the workout in both time and distance.  So far I've come up short on the distance.  For example this moring was 1:40 training ride/26 miles...I managed to do 23.5 in 1:40.  My run was 31 minutes/3.1 miles...I managed 2.6 miles.  Should I go by time or distance?

Will my butt get used to the saddle?  Like does it toughen up?  1:20 into the workout and it was seriously sore!!!

I consider myself in pretty darn good shape, but this workout was really tough.  After I finished I thought to myself "I don't know if I can do this..."  Is that normal?  I feel good now...but right after I was about in tears.

On longer rides should the majority of time be in zone 2?  That's where I was most of the time with occassional jumps into zone 3.  Same thing on the run.  Is this correct?

Thanks for any answers, suggestions, etc!!!

I can give you some advice for the bike ride.  It's normal for your butt to hurt. ( Sorry Cry   Your butt will get used to the seat the more you ride.  I have biking shorts that have a comfort gel pad built in the crotch that helps.  You may want to look into getting a pair.  Hope this helps.

Another question!  How many of you schedule one (or more I guess) days completely off...no cardio, no weights, just a complete day off?  Mine is tomorrow and I'm already feeling the 'I should do something'...but I also know how important it is to let the body rest.  What do you guys do?

One day a week.  And rest means REST.  My coach beat that into me.  We get stronger on the REST days.  The other says we are stressing our bodies tearing things apart so when our body mends it mends stronger than it was.  But it can't do that unless we give it the time.  Go to a movie.  Take a walk at most.   Otherwise, we need to eat, hydrate, sleep.  I love working out but I LOVE Friday!

Mondays are my designated day off.  I must admit, however, that sometimes I disregard the rest and get in a swim or do a little yoga.  My body generally tells me when it's time to keep the rest day and when it is ok to sneak in an easy workout.  My body's clue usually is it screams, "You need sleep.  Stay in bed!"

One day off is a necessity. Especially when training for longer distances. You did say you had your first "hard" training session yesterday, so I definitely would take the day off, especially since you were sore at the end.

I might not be listening to my own (and everyone elses) advice though. I've been lazy for a while and need to keep training so I don't let one rest day lead to 2 or 3 or 4. Once I get back in the habit I'll start incorporating rest days again. I'll blame it on my youth and stupidity. Laughing

Technically I have one off day a week in my schedule.  It's supposed to be Friday although some weeks it gets moved around (and some weeks - like this weekEmbarassed - it becomes more than one day (really need to work on thatSmile)).  Anyway, when I'm "on schedule" I don't plan anything for that day.  If I'm feeling restless and like I need to do something, I'll take a walk or maybe do some stretching or light yoga.  Basically just enough to get the blood flowing.

The plans I loosely follow have rest days built in.  More often, life intervenes and I take "unscheduled" rest days.  As such, if a "planned" workout dribbles into the "Scheduled" rest day, I'm usually OK with that.

During the off season my rest day is Monday, so that I'm resting after my long run on Sunday. During the season, it's usually Friday since most plans have you completely rest 2 days out from a race (one day out being a very light workout).  As others have said, rest is just as important as training.  If you don't let your body recover you won't see the greatest return or results off all your hard training.  And rest applies to sleep each night as well.  Also, most plans have 3 weeks of hard training and then the 4th week is lighter, for the same reasoning.

x2 - I never schedule a rest day, but they usually occur at least once a week due to family, work, etc... I then try and see where I am toward  the end of the week and get in the missing workouts then.

Brain picking time...

I always get pain on the outside of my lower leg when running on the treadmill. Its not shin splints, as its on the opposite side of my leg. Its the Anterior Tibialis muscle. It always feels like its really tight, cramps and full of knots. I usually can roll it out before I run with a foam roller, but that hasn't been helping.  I attached a pic (which labels it "anterior tibias muscle) of a left leg so you can see where I'm talking. Any thoughts on whats causing it or how to fix it?

Yes I do usually rest once a week... It depends on my work schedule ext... So usually my "rest" happens on one of my 12 hr workdays...

Also I wish I had a food intolerance!!! I like to eat everything in sight!!! Hence I gained 5lbs over xmas break :P... Back to my nutrition plan!

They aren't that old. Its been happening for some time. In my old shoes when they were in need of replacement and in these shoes when they were brand new. From what I've noticed its only when I'm on the TM. Today its been tight all day just walking around the office.

Woo hoo!! I did the Spartan Race in Vermont this year which is very similar. The best way to prep for it is...well...I guess there really is no way to prep for it!! Maybe running in soaking wet, muddy shoes & clothes would help?! If you're training properly you should be fine, but don't expect any PR's over whatever distance it is, thats for sure!!

Your gait probably changes a little since you're only moving up/down on the treadmill instead of forward-up/down.  Any chance your foot is slapping the tread?  Could also be the "sponginess" of the TM that creates more ankle flex => shin pain.  Pretty consistent on the TM?  If so, try running near the front or rear roller instead of half-way between and see if that makes a difference (try it both at the front and rear).

Other than that, I got nuthin'....
