Considering the thought of swimming 5k makes me tired maybe I shouldn't give you too much crap!

After Sands and I sweep the podium, you know you're going to want to join us next year

...... Nah!

My thought exactly!

Alright, update on my eye.  Not good news, as I'm still in my glasses until Monday, when I go back to the doctor.  Still have a scratch on my cornea and some infection.  Hopefully it will clear up enough to get me up and running early next week.  My first tri is a week from Sunday.  Until then, I'm going to try and run and bike some with the glasses, see how that goes.

Did doc give or prescribe you some eye drops to help with it? I believe mine healed up in prob 3 days with the drops and I was good to go. I guess the good thing is that I don't have to wear contacts...

Yeah, I have some Zymar drops.  It's clearing up, but wasn't clear enough to let me get back in contacts.  By Monday, it should be okay unless something else is going on.  I'm getting a bit used to the glasses, but not preferable.  I'm almost blind without them, so they are a necessity.

Good luck on the upcoming swim.  Y'all will be swimming thru Pensacola while I'm s/b/r over in MS.

Sands, you didn't mention the 1 mile open water swim race (for us lazy swimmers), and why aren't y'all doing the aquathon 5k run and 5k swim?

Going for the 25k, huh?

BTW Robert I looked up the dude in your AG who put down 1:15 for his time.   Dude has done 100 fly in like 50 seconds.  Way out of our league.  We'll have to settle for second and third overall.  ;-)

http://www.3milebridgeswim.org/

Forgot there was a 1 miler.  I can't do the aquathon.  Heck, if I run at lunchtime and then swim after work I have issues with calf cramping.  If I did the aquathon I'd lock up solid in the first 2000 yards of the swim.  For the same reason I'll probably never do a reverse tri.  My calves are squeezing up just thinking about it.

And sorry you can't go this weekend.  But no way I'd get in the water with what you have.  Can you bike and run?  Cornea scratches will heal up, though.  And you won't gain any fitness between now and next weekend, anyway.

WOW. Looking at these times, it looks like I'm going to get SMOKED! I'll be lucky to pull off a 3rd place spot!

Two faster folks are predicting a 1:15 & 1:20 finishing time.
Heck, there's quite a few predicting 1:00!
And what's humiliating is the guy predicting 1:43 for the 10k. (5' slower than my predicting 5k)

The guys putting 1:00 down have no clue, I'm sure.  The guy who hit 1:08 last year was a nationally ranked athlete.

The guy predicting 1:43 is insane.  I'd be very surprised at anything under 2:25.

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been MIA!  I just started a new job a few weeks ago, so these last couple of weeks have been kind of weird trying to get into the swing of things.... especially trying to fit in training with my new schedule while still keeping some sort of social life!  I think things are settling down, but I've missed a lot of training  I'm starting to get worried for my half iron, but there's a sprint associated with it, so if I can't seem to find my groove within the next few weeks, I can probably switch down (ie, sell my half entry and re-register for the sprint)

I have my first tri of the season coming on next Saturday, so I'm heading up to Lake Geneva tomorrow with some friends to ride some hills.  Depending on the lake temperature, we may also go for a swim!  I'm hoping to do a couple of open water swims this week in Lake Michigan as well!  I was going to jump in yesterday after work, but the air temperature had dropped from about 80 in the morning to 50 after work, and though the water was in the upper 50's, I would have frozen when I got out!

I participated in a practice race this morning.  600yd swim, 24 mile bike, and what turned out to be a 2.5 mile run.  The bike is fairly tough - 1700 feet of climbing at Oak Mountain.  The run was mercifully short as my calf is sore from a cramp the other day.

50 participants or so, about 25 of which did the long course.  I planned on lollygagging it, but they handed out timing chips and people started getting game faces on.  Damn, now I had to exert myself.  Crushed the swim - 7:40 for 600yds (distance was spot on).  Managed the 24 mile bike averaging almost 20, which was pretty good considering I had no aero bits, good tires, or a tri setup on the bike.  239w average.  Run was pretty pedestrian.  I did "win" it, for what that is worth.  Fun morning, though - beautiful weather.

I hate I missed it.  I really wanted to do the practice race.  Dadgum eye!!!!

Good job on the win.  I imagine there was some fast folks out there, a few usually show up.  Guess I could have come out to volunteer, didn't think about that.

Question for you guys that have a wheel disk cover from wheel builder....

Can I put it on and travel with it on my bike, or is it best to put it on after we arrive at the race site?  My bike goes on a hitch rack on the back of the car.  Although, I might be able to put the bike in the car for this trip.  Any thoughts, or advice here?

I don't have a wheel cover but if I did I would be nervous about having it on when the bike is on a hitch rack. It seems like there would be a lot of surface area to catch the wind and rattle the bike on the rack. I don't know how hard it is to put the cover on but if you don't want to do it at the race site could you just take the whole wheel (cover and all) off and put it in the back seat while the bike is on the rack?

I had a short race yesterday morning.  250m swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run.  Although, I have to admit, I think the run course was shorter than 2 miles.  It hadn't changed from last year but everybody's run split was fast, at least faster than I expected.  Who knows, I could be wrong.

This race is so short it's really just a training day.  It's built for beginners and was my first ever race last year so I had to revisit it.  Race report is here.  2nd overall male and 1st in AG.  The guy who won it finished about 3 minutes ahead of me.  My wife ended up taking 2nd overall female and 1st in her AG.  Very proud of her!

Afterwards I went out for a 2hr ride that went surprisingly well.  Our next race is a local olympic distance that has a short 800m swim.  It's very popular so there should be some great athletes out there.

That's what I was thinking.  I guess the chain, etc. would be okay without the back wheel on.

I recently got the clipless pedals and shoes for my bike.  I didn't unclip in time this evening and fell.  I hit my head on the ground.  The helmet looks ok but was wondering if I should get a new one.  Anyone know?

Personally, I would. If it took a hit, you can't guarantee it'll be there for you next time when/if you need it.

Plus, how old was it? Usually you'll want to replace them every 4-5yrs just from age anyways. Unless that's the LBS's way of coaxing more money out of me

It is only a year old but I am not worried about cost. I figured I would have to replace it. I know in the parenting world, I would have to replace carseats in case of an accident so I thought a helmet would be kinda similar.

Eh - the foam in helmets lasts a long, long time.  Replacing at 4 yrs. would be more of a fashion thing.  The thing most likely to go is the epoxy holding the shell to the foam.

As far as replacing the helmet I'd give it a really good look over for cracks and crushing.  Anything that looks funny means a replacement.  (Personally) if I didn't see anything wrong with it I'd keep it.

Great job - especially since you didn't have your race setup/mentality.

Sounds like a near perfect day for the meashmead household!

The helmet looks ok but was wondering if I should get a new one.  Anyone know?

I know that with motorcycle helmets it is recommended that you replace them if you bang them as you can't see what damage has been done to the internals. I'd say that for the cost of a new helmet I'd buy a new one as it's not worth the risk.

titeloops - 2011-05-16 6:29 AM Jennifer, how was Florida? How was your race?

Oh yeah, she was doing the FL 70.3 this weekend, right?
