Someone had mentioned you should be working on specific drills to address specific issues that you want to correct. Perhaps a silly question, but how do you really know which issues and hence which drills you should be doing? I know some of mine, but I'm sure there are others that I'm simply not aware of. That is correct. You need someone to look at your stroke/kick or if you just know what issues you need to work. Sometimes you can just do the drill to see if your stroke will improve but make sure your doing the drill correctly. Youtube to get an idea then have a swim buddy/coach check the drill. Find a friend with a waterproof camera. Take video from front and side underwater. Post it here. We'll let you know. Or just find someone locally who knows what they are doing. Agreed with all of the above. You really need an outside opinion. You may think you are doing one thing while in fact you are doing the opposite. Video is a great way for someone to critique you and also for you to see it for yourself. |

![]() Fred D - 2012-10-09 2:31 PM We should aim at loading up some videos of bike fit and swim videos in the coming months. Certainly swimming I have less to add, but we have enough fish here to compensate for sure. It is a way we can help each other over the winter. I don't post to you tube much, but is there a way to load a video to a channel of some sort. That way all of our swim and bike videos go to one place? Or maybe tag the video with BT Mentor Group so it's easy to search for? I think that would be really helpful instead of trying to find links buried in the thread. Btw my swim focus I have decided should start when the weather gets a bit worse as I have two really beautiful bikes and they keep asking me to ride them while the weather is still nice. And you wonder why you're a strong biker, and swimming is your weakest discipline... |

We have a 5 (almost 6) year old boy together. I have two boys (11 -- almost 12 and 16) from a previous marriage, and my husband has five adult children from his previous marriage. I work in academia and am currently in the midst of an interview process for a position in California. (EEK!!!) We have two dogs and a kitty (my princess). We are also currently battling field mice -- 'tis the season. As a family, we love to camp, hike, and take very slow (and ridiculously short) family bike rides.
Welcome and good luck with the job interview in California! Thanks, Rene. Things are still moving along. After our early freeze Sunday morning, I am ready for something warmer. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-10-09 5:14 PM I often plan training into my vacation. We visit disney on an almost yearly basis. I know where to run, swim and ride there. Truthfully the last 5 years I've done IM and that is usually a vacation spot on its own and we have taken the whole family all but 1 year. Training is my sanity and on vacation I need to maintain that as well. IM has been incorporated into vacation for us too for the past 4 years. Also, every year we go to the beach with my wife's family (all ~50 of them, literally). I love my wife, but sanity is definitely in jeopardy that week. It is typically my biggest volume week of riding every year... I'd love to get reaction to swim video, but it seems I've forgotten my way to the pool. (Actually, Fred, I'm taking your advice from several days ago on board -- I won't wait until Dec., but I am taking a break in hopes of regaining enthusiasm. I think it is working because all of this talk of swimming is giving me the itch to get back at it.) |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-10-08 9:58 PM Oh I have the itch to swim big time, but I will tell you this.... In central PA, the bike riding is completely amazing in the fall. The temperature, the leaves changing and the fact that the cold winter is coming simply makes me want to ride at this time of year. xbazillion...best time of year to ride/run up here as well. A couple of pages back (I go to sleep for an evening and you guys sprint ahead...no rest for the weary), someone mentioned swim drills with a tube...can anyone provide details? I have tried swimming with a latex band (the kind you get in PT) around my feet with no buoy for 200-300m when I get in the pool - which is really hard for me...any other drills you can recommend? Also - please correct me if I'm wrong - this is to help with body position in the water - right? |

I usually break up swimming with the band to something like 8x25 or 6x50. Shorter swims like this give me a better chance to focus on what I want to work on in body position. I usually have to increase my turnover quite a bit to the point that maintaining it for 300 would be impossible. I think the only time I've done 300 straight with a band, I also had a pullbuoy, paddles and a drag chute (no idea what I did to deserve that!) |

Agree with Arend on this; when I'm introducing athletes to the band, it will start with something like 8x25 on 1:00 and simply focus on keeping hips and feet at the surface. Usually after about half a length, athletes that are new to the band and aren't from a swim team background are simply trying to keep moving forward. Eventually, they will get better at holding form through the 25's and then we will go to 50's, 75's and eventually 100's. Even the best swimmers I work with (sub 20 1500) struggle after 100 band and will take the rest to recover and bit so that they can focus on body position over the next 100. Shane |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What does it mean if you don't have any problems swimming with the band? I'm a slow swimmer. Swimming with the band doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm not really any faster or slower with the band. What does this mean? Am I just use to swimming with my legs/hips dragging behind me? Yesterday was the first day that I actually swam faster using a pull buoy. Swam 1:45 per 100 with buoy and 1:55 without during my long swim. Wetsuit swims have never seemed to give me any advantage either. |

You have a good body position You are not over gliding You have a good stroke rate If without the band your swimming slower other issues are present. Some that come to mind are; kick, ankle flexibility and hip rotation. I am sure other issues come into play. My gut instinct is lower body without seeing. Are you coached or have someone that can check you? EDIT btwWithout the band engage your core by tighten your abs and tighten your gluts. Someone said before to explain it like squeezing a coin in the crack of your butt.

Tapers stress me out; always wondering if I am hitting it just right. I suppose I'll find out next week... |

We do not plan vacation with training in mind; however, once we decide on a vacation, I always check what the training options are. |

Regarding the bike, I am looking to get a bit lower on the bike (removing a spacer) and changing the saddle for comfort. Feedback in this area will be appreciated. I'll try to load some before and after pics/videos for this November project. Regarding the swim, not sure I could handle all of the constructive criticism that will fly my way with a swim video ;) |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() New wheels arrived last night. Mavic Open Pro/Ultegra - not exactly sexy, but first upgrade on the bike thus far. Old RS10 rear was jacked up (rideable, but would just eventually come out of true) from the front fork coming loose on my roof rack. Nothing quite like seeing your fork bouncing up and down out of your driver side window. I've got a very embarassing swim video analysis that eventually does a side-by-side with me and Davis Tarwater. Very embarassing.

It's pretty long, but the Tarwater stuff comes in near the end of both the above water and under water videos. The intro video is just the instructor talking. Despite being subjected to my swim technique, more particularly the lack thereof, I thought this was a great tool. I just need to get to work on the suggestions, but the visual explanation really helps me, not to mention being a real eye-opener on how poorly I swim. I guess bad form and slow is better than good form and slow.

![]() | ![]() I did a swim video of myself just from the top swimming and it was extremely helpful without even showing anyone (although I did anyways). What you think you are doing and what you really are doing are not always in sync. ![]() |

Being compared to an Olympic gold medalist is harsh! (Harsh isn't necessarily bad.) |

Wow, that's a great detailed analysis video! I don't think there is anything I would add to it. I agree with Michael, your swim really isn't that bad - it just seems like it when you compare it to an elite level swimmer. I notice the videos are from 4 months ago. Have you had a chance to do much work on the suggestions he makes? |
