Have any of you experienced (or know of anyone) that has experienced shingles during training? Did this affect your training? Did you have to cut back? Any help would be appreciated! I had shingles in 2000 and my only advice is to "respect" them, they hurt and they suck. Listen to your Doc and get on the Meds to stop them from spreading ASAP. They are usually brought on by stress, so if your training load is adding to your stress, it is not going to help. I got mine right after I switched jobs, started commuting a hour each way in traffic, listed the house, tried to keep my wife sane, and tried to keep my same training schedule! Needless to say, I ended up stopping training completely for almost 2 months until we got the shingles under control and then had to work my way back very slowly. They can definately be brought on by stress. It is an activation of the chicken pox virus that resides in your nerve root after you have had chicken pox. When the body's immune system drops it can activate. It follows the skin distrubution that is assigned to that particular nerve. Anit-viral medication like Acyclovir can help put it back in remission. The pain can be intense and can be controlled by medications like Gabapentin or by patches like lidoderm. You should definately take a look at the stressors in your life and your training to see if there is anything you can identify that may be contributing to the outbreak. If you training is not to stressing you too much and you are getting enough recovery it might be OK. If you are bent on training you may consider decreaseing your intensity some until it heals up. It won't kill you but it really sucks. Thanks all for the input! I just took an inventory of my stresses and not much stress except for my training with inadequate rest. I just looked at my log and have been training 6 out of 7 days with multiple sports during those days. This is with just 5 hours of sleep. Looks like I should just taper down my training slightly, get more sleep, throw in more rest days, and build up more gradually to these levels. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() No races this weekend. Jayne, you are an animal. I love it. That is quite a schedule. Chet, glad to hear you are doing well. The heart muscle is amazingly resilient. On the note of calories, I have always had people write their intake down versus Apps. It forces them to physically go look up the values thereby creating a learned response, making them accountable. This also creates a memory of the food value for when they are in the real world and not having to look up a caloric value, they will know it off hand.As far as loss of fitness to train for another sport, it's a non issue. The muscle memory from prior sport however seems to be causing a good deal of problem. Thanks all, have a great weekend. ![]() |

It seems like this comes up every now and again. This is when you need to sit back and really take a look at your training. Training, exercise, racing, healthy living, etc is suppose be fun, enjoyable, and make you feel good about things. I am curious what others think about this. (This could be why it is taking me years to get faster |

(This could be why it is taking me years to get faster Agree. When training starts to feel stressful, or like "work", something is off. I spent much of last year running, building up to run an ultra. I thought I would like it, but the long distance training isn't fun for me, and it started to feel like work. Now I'm refocusing my goals and training to keep it fun and make more efficient use of my time - quality over quantity, as has come up several times in the last few days. I have to add, though, that quality doesn't just mean higher intensity, which I think newbies should be careful about. It means having a purpose for each workout, not just logging oodles of junk miles/yards. |

I will have to agree with you Cheyl, I have found having an actual food diary has been more reliable and makes me more aware of what I'm eating and what I'm putting in my body. GO HAWKS!!! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() First swim lesson down......I am so happy with the decision to have lessons. It helped so much and it was only my first. I defenitly have a long way to go but it seems more obtainable now. I would recommend a swimming coach or private lessons to anyone who has a fear of the swimming... and I plan on keeping mine till I feel I can comfortably swim with good form and have the endurance I need. He really pushed me and corrected me during the whole session. Which will definiatly help in making sure I don't hurt myself. I want to thank my swimming buddies (Michelle & Cheryl) for making it fun while I felt like I was gonna die. lol I really did enjoy every minutes (even if I can't walk today) No races this weekend, but really hoping to get a good bike ride in..... After the Seahawks KICK BUTT!! Hope everyone has a great weekend and good luck to all that are racing..... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2013-01-09 6:29 AM Yoo-Hoo! It's Wednesday! Who is braving the elements to race this weekend? Details please. Let's talk balance. we've had some good discussion about not wanting to give up one sport for fear of losing fitness while training for the other two. Have you encountered that feeling? how have you dealt with it? was it successful? No racing here until mid-February. Clearly, I have no fear of losing fitness on the bike since I hadn't been on it since September. My legs aren't as banged up from yesterday's ride as my seat is right now. This afternoon's run should be interesting.

My dh is an ICU nurse so was interested in hearing your story. Shingles sounds like the pits! I have never had them but read a long thread over on slow twitch once about them. Seems like a lot of athletes get them when they are training hard. Not fun. I will have to keep this in mind with training. I feel like I have recently crossed the line with training from feels good and invigorating to feels draining. I have a 5k race this Saturday! I would really like to PR but haven't really cut back on training this week. My legs may not be fresh enough. We will see. I hope everyone is having a good week. |

Your body needs that sleep time to recover. You may well be capable of the training stress you are putting on your body IF you can get 7-8 hours a night. If not, find the balance that allows you to catch some more zzzzs. |

Everyone is so so different.... I actually prefer a road saddle with zero padding, but others prefer the cutouts, others prefer the padding. I would advise you to only buy if you get a good deal, and if it doesn't work you can resell and recapture any losses.
Unless of course you have tried one already and know this IS the saddle for you? I do know that some bike shops around the country let you rent saddles as well to try them out. Maybe check that out as well. Saddles are a VERY important part of the bike. |
