cbarnes1 - 2009-08-08 12:58 PM Questions for the group.  Crashed today hard on the bike.  Went into a corner and front tire kicked out, I think because of a flat.  This was 54 minutes into the ride and i finished up the 3.5 hours.  Obviously not serious but I have road rash from my shoulder to my ankle on my right side.  I need treatment options.  Vitamin E?  Cover it or not?  Don't swim and for how long?  Anyone have experience with road rash?  I have a couple deep sores on my knee and one on my hip.  The rest is just scrapes.typical road rash.  Any advice would be helpful.

The bike took a big hit though.  I was able to get it rolling to finish the ride but I broke the bar end shifter, brake lever, rear bottle mount and scraped up the bars and pedal.  Frame looks good.   I guess I can upgrade some components now

Tough luck Chet.  Glad you are OK.  Looks like it has been a day for bike wrecks.  Just found out that my buddy has some fairly serious brain trauma, and they have him induced into a coma right now.  Pretty scary...

Apparently my friend and another were riding side by side at 5:30 and this guy never even hit the brakes.  He obviously did not see them or their blinking lights on the back.Ty flipped straight over the car after being hit from behind.  The guy did turn himself in to the police about an hour later.

This has got me thinking...I use a blinking light on the back and a blinking white LED light up front.  I am thinking about adding some reflection. Like tape to the bike or sew to my jerseys etc.  Any of you got any ideas or anything that you are using that seems to work well.

From Kim the other day, lol we just had this discussion

Not that gross, Suzy!  I vote for Hibiclens to clean, and if it's not infected, instead of using an antibiotic ointment, use Carrasyn gel.  It is a wound dressing that helps the skin to heal up without scarring.  Don't use Polysporin or Neosporin.  It will scar and be super ugly.  After it scabs, there is this great stuff called "Mederma" that I have been using on all of my old scars and it is actually making them disappear.  Try not to get it wet too much.  I don't know how much of it you can cover while swimming but if it is chlorinated water it should be okay.
Oh, just noticed the part about OWS, make sure whatever you do, Hibiclens after you swim and let it air dry.  NO Sun on that wound, cover it up while running or biking.  Or large bandage?

I had the same thing, I just kept it clean, and covered, out of the sun to reduce scarring.

Thanks for locating this Tony.   I had a Purell wipe with me when I fell so I cleaned as much crap off my road rash as I could right away.  I am guessing you didn't have that luxury so that should be the first step.  I did buy the Hibiclens Kim recommended and used after every swim, especially in OW (I swam in the pool the next day).  I slathered mine with Neosporin (although Kim recommended something that I could not find in my area) every chance I got.  The Neosporin helped keep it moist and then it didn't hurt as much.    The area was too big to cover with a bandage and touching it hurt a lot so I left it open. Sleeping stinks.  Given the amount of rash you have I am guessing you will be in your biirthday suit on the top of the sheets and not sleeping well for a few days. Now that I am past the painful stage I am using the Mederma with SPF 35.  That stuff is amazing.

Are you sure physically you are ok?  I know after I got hit by a bike last summer I thought I was fine, but I wasn't.  If anything seems a little off, maybe get it looked at, ok?  Would hate for you to go back to rehab with your racing plans!

Barry--really sorry about your friend.  I am constantly reminded of how dangerous biking can be.  I hope he pulls through ok.

Arrived at my hotel to find out boys basketabll tournaments are in town and several teams are staying at this hotel. Lovely.

Here is a peak at the lake swim....its an out and back which I kind of like although the RD warned us siting on the way in is impossible because of the sun.  Figure I will go with the masses.  Temps are gross (91F, 75% humidity), but I expected them to be that way.  Oh and T-storms are predicted in the early morning.  Perfect conditions to practice for all that could go wrong in the HIM!  Tomorrow when I report back, if I have not stayed within my Z3 zone and fueled welll on the bike to keep my run more than a shuffle someone has the right to slap me upside the head.  Any takers?

JHagerman - 2009-08-08 9:35 AM Ohh noooooo!  My tri tomorrow was just deemed NOT Wetsuit Legal!

This will be bad.

None of mine have been wetsuit legal so far this year - then again, they have all been between 400 and 800 meters...  Maybe my Oly will be, but I am not pinning my hopes on it...

I usually am not the one to pass up the opportunity to slap someone on the head, but you are soooooo far ahead of me and in such top shape and such a great racer, that you really put me to shame.  So no slapping on the head here. :-D

Thunderstorms - lovely.

Have a great time!

Does anyone have those days  when they regret going into triathlon?  Just wondering. :-)

Did I mention my coach was fussing with me to boot?

Sigh.

I never regret getting into triathlon. My only regret is I didn't do it sooner!  Starting marathons at 40 and triathlon at 45, I need to live to be 100 to achieve all my goals!!!  Have fun with it....set small goals and knock them out of the park.  That is my strategy at every race....Laughing

Nope...  I am better person for it...  As for the coach fussing at you - isn't that what you pay them to do?  I know the coaches I had in high school used to "fuss" (that's a nice way to put it) when they knew that we had more potential than we were showing or when we were lollygagging instead of getting after it.

Barry - sorry to hear about your friend.  I am a firm believer in positive thinking and that anything is possible.  Doctors try but don't know the heart and drive of a triathlete to heal.  He will get better,  even if the odds are bad, he will be on the bike again.

Thanks for the tips, I will try the creams.  I have 15 areas I need to put it on   I will order in bulk.  I keep trying to figure out pictures, so if it doesn't post this time, oops.

Chet, as far as road rash  -  I would be careful doing any OWS as bacteria is really high in the open water this time of year.

Its just a betting line Suz. Your either betting on him being 34 and under or 35 and over.
I am going to take the over ..I think he is turning 35.

Chet...Glad you're ok. Awesome pic. Should get sympathy for that.
Barry, thoughts are with your friend. Since I took up this sport, I an so aware of cyclists now.

And hey want to wear a wetsuit? Get out of Texas and head up to Canada!!

He wouldn't need to go that far north....they pulled 16 people out of Lake Michigan last weekend.  All had hypothermia.  The water was 50F and 3 ft waves.  Oh and some were NOT wearing wetsuits.

The betting line makes sense if you are in Vegas.  Here it is all about the whole number!

Suzy=33
Doug=34
Trevor=35

So where does that leave Andy?

Chet, sorry about your crash!  Tomorrow when you wake up, take stock of how you are feeling.  Sometimes the adrenaline from the crash can mask deeper injuries.  Take it easy...and lay off of the swimming for at least 4-5 days.

Good luck to all of our racers this weekend.  I have a moderately long run tomorrow morning, 8 miles.  My weather is gorgeous right now...not rubbing it in or anything, but 55F in the am.  love it.
