dalessit - 2009-08-09 3:32 AM good luck to everyone racing today.  I am off for my 15 miler in a few minutes.

LOL its 4:30am here..  Hope everyone is sleeping well.

Stay cool, looks like most of the US is under the same heatwave. (hence me with my butt out of bed this early)

Sleeping?   Enjoy the run.  You are obviously dedicated to be up for it on a Sunday morning.

Great job, Tony!  Man, 40 miles is one good week!  I'm off for my measly 8 miles.  Did you find a headlamp that you liked?  Good luck Suzy!

Nice run Tony!  Now that's what I call dedication!

Sorry about all the double posts.  I don't know what's wrong with my fingers lately.

Got a question for the runners.  I got in my 11 mile run on Thursday.  Friday and Saturday I only had one muscle group that was sore - my hip flexors (more speficially the outer part).  They were so tight and pretty sore.  Any suggestions other than stretching?  I have a pretty busy week beginning today and did not know of anything that might help.  I noticed when swimming on Friday that when I did a few breaststroke kicks, I felt it working that area.  So I might try to incorporate this into a little leg strengthening workout.  I know this is a weak area and thought it may help.  Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, etc?

BTW, Steve is 33.

Yes I did, I think I have the same one you recommended.

lol, was dissapointed that the trail was well lit at 5:00 this morning, so I didn't need it that much.  There were a few sections that were pitch black and would have been interesting to navigate without the light though.

Over under on Steve's age is 34 1/2...

I say under....

Uhmmm, if his birthday is on Monday, he canb't be a 1/2 right????  I'm going with 33.

Hey Chet, nice.....road rash.....the leg looks the worst (eeeewwwww!).  Scrub, cream up and be prepared to take a Sominex!
Its just a betting line Suz. Your either betting on him being 34 and under or 35 and over.
I am going to take the over ..I think he is turning 35.

Chet...Glad you're ok. Awesome pic. Should get sympathy for that.
Barry, thoughts are with your friend. Since I took up this sport, I an so aware of cyclists now.

And hey want to wear a wetsuit? Get out of Texas and head up to Canada!!

Why on earth would I want to do that?

Free health care? or umm....well thats about it. OH and we love lots of mountains.

Off to do my 10k race today. Not sure if I am going to getit done though.
Had crash in the outfield yesterday at softball. Glad I was the bigger horse in the crash, but I took his knee in my thigh, so got a pretty charleyhorse going today.
Stilll want to PB it though. Haven't run a 10k race since April so I would love to see some improvement over the summer.
Good luck today Suzy and Jeremy!

I use a "The Stick" roller on pretty much all sore areas after working out and it seems to work pretty well.

I also use some stretches from my MMA days, where you stand flat footed, bring one knee straight up then move it out, do that about 10 times each side.  Not sure if that is the same muscle group but still a good stretch.

I'm back and finished in 3:09:xx.

Somehow my chip must have malfunctioned because my transintions and bike split vanished into thin air, the swim was 29ish and ok (although I decided I do not like out and backs.  You know exactly how much farther you have to go!!)  Got kidney punched and kicked, but I am getting used to coping with that .....Pretty much followed the race strategy to a T which allowed me to pass a lot of miserable runners.  The heat index was over 100 so my run time of 53ish is not stellar, but acceptable.  Realized when I got to the hotel I sliced the bottom of my foot open at some point.  I guess adrenaline didn't allow me to realize it.

Best news of all is my fueling strategy worked...about 250 cals down the chute on the 1:35 minute bike left me enough oomph for the run!

Overall pleased with the day....and looking forward to my HIM.

RR to follow once final results are up!

Hey NICE RUN AND GOOD WEEK TONY!  40 miles is some serious running. 20 is serious for me.

Chris, I don't have "the stick", but a good rolling pin works pretty well.  Get one of your young'uns to pretend they are rolling out some dough on your legs and back...got to watch the bony areas though.  Works wonders  I think I am going to try to "re-package" the rolling pin and give it some fancy name...sell it for around $29 to triathletes (who'll buy anything) and see if I can make enough to kick back, train full time, and drink drinks with little umbrellas in them

Back in from the race. Wanted to say whats up before I walk out my bedroom into a bunch of screaming kids.  At least their parents are good friends... for the most part.

Great time this morning.  The race was very close to our house.  Race itself.. bleh!  But I can't expect much from not doing much since the HIM. I did improve my transitions to 1:40 and 0:59 so thats cool.

Cool part is I hang out with and train with a group BTer's (~15), kinda like you guys but I actually drink beer with them.  In the group we had  a 1st in AG (3rd overall) 2nd in AG and a 3rd in AG.

RR later.   Hope you guys are having a great weekend...esp you Chet.  How's that roadrash.  Trevor....softball?  Really?  I mean really?

edit... Almost forgot.  good job everyone getting on that "Igonore this post thread"   too  funny!!!!

Way to rock you're Oly Suzy!!  Congrats!

I raced a sprint today and took 3rd in my AG!  I felt slow on the run, and the split showed it - 23 minutes.  I'm not sure yet what the 4th place time was, but my OA time was 1h15m and I'm pretty sure I was 19/212 overall.  I'll post a RR tomorrow.

Excellent job, Jeremy, you are so fast!
Suzy, 29 minutes for your swim is a great time  nice job getting it done in that sort of heat and humidity.  Your training is seriously paying dividends... HIM is going to be awesome.
John-it must be fun to have so many training partners!  They know how to do it in Texas

Good job Suzy ... as usual.  Sounds like you did well on the swim which set you up perfectly.  Got your nutrition down.  I think you may be overthinking this nutrition thing.  I mean that is like 2 gels right?  lol   I haven't thought much about nutrition ... except that I will probably "wing it" in my normal style.  Maybe I will try to put some kind of plan together between now and Sept 27

Jeremy...Pretty fast dude!  On land anyway.  Don't know if we would call you an amphibious speed demon yet...huh?  Did you use the wetsuit or not?

John...I know you didn't put alot into this one, but hopefully you got some experience from just having another one under your belt.  Plus, a perfect opportunity to hang out with your buddies an hoist one after the finish line.

Great jobs Suzy and Jeremy!!! Looking forward to your RRs.

Andy: I upped the weight on my squat part of my strength program and between that and my V-crunches with the FB I am sore all over again today! However I believe it is really helping my swim times are getting better and my swim time does not tail off as much the longer I swim.

I am about to up the weight on some of the strength training as well.  I am sure I am in for another week of soreness!  That's OK though because the payoff is going to be worth it!

Congratulations Jeremy and John!!  Another race in the books.  What about the rest of you?

Chris-are you sure it is hip flexors and not your TFL?  Lots of running can really tighten this muscle group up.  I usually stick my TP trigger ball on that point, but you can also use a tennis ball. It hurts like crazy if it is tight so leave it there for a little while.  Follow that up with a foam roller or TP Quad Roller down the sides of your legs (ITB), quads and hamstrings to loosen the whole area.

Oh and Kim and I win the Steve contest!  Guess Tony buys us another beer in Texas!!

well anothergood weekend of training. a 2 hour bike ride on saturday and a 21K run on Sunday. The run felt really good until 17.5K. I was tired by then a decided to take a quick break and walk a little bit. After that it was like trying to run in mud uphill . I could n't get a pace going properly again. I guess I shouldn't havae walked. Over all though I am very pleased with my run. A question for you runners. I was reading a book where they said for long distances you should not be landing on your heel but trying to land on the middle of the ball of your foot. I tried this and it seemed to work pretty good today. What do you "expert" runners think. I have never had a coach so don't know if this is something they tell you about?

Nice job on the run today.  If you can go the 21K even with some walking it will make your HIM that much easier.

A mid foot strike with a softer heal landing is beneficial to the body, but often very hard to change.   A hard heel striker creates a braking effect with each landing which is hard on lower extremities wheras the mid foot striker lands under the pelvis.  Before doing this you might consider trying to increase your turnover and shorten your stride a bit.  This often times helps you get closer to that mid foot position without you falsely trying to do so.
