Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jvanis - 2010-07-07 10:56 AM So I am curious what everyone considers good/fast/slow etc run times. My observation thus far is everyone seems to think their run is slow. Outside of a general classification of Fast: Anyone faster than me Average: Everything else? I cannot put my finger on a number persay that I would call fast, but I do fall into the above trap where I say I am not a fast runner. fast for me is slow for you, slow for me is fast for someone else... I don't get too worked up over it. If I can do my race this weekend in the 10:00/mi range then I will be happy because that would be improvement. |

It's time to give the MG some details..... For those not racing, we're probably about mid-season so what goal did you hit so far and what's still left to be conquered? Me! Doing my third annual sprint in Northern WI--440y swim in a river/18m rolling hill bike/5k cross country run.....training through it, but plan to use it as a speed work day...have a ride immediately after it which should be interesting. Jeff, I agree with Sam on how I judge my pace plus I also look at my performance relative to past performances. Ever since injury I consider myself slow. I know I am capable of running significnatly faster, but that training has taken a backseat to my IM training which is way more focused on biking speed and endurance. Feel like it'll come back when I am able to focus on it again in the Fall. |

Using that as my basis I am slow. I can do MOP on the swim, FOP on the bike and BOP on the run. Frustrating to run 7:00/pace and still be 7/10 in my AG... I need to get to mid/low 6's to do well in a sprint and low 7's or high 6's to do well in Olympics. well then it seems you're not FOP on the bike. i'm slower than some and faster than others. but i surely wouldn't call just about everyone up here "average" Going by placing for each discipline. No matter how much I would save my legs on the bike by going slower I just don't have that short distance speed yet. Getting there but does seem to take time like everything else. Based on my previous run times I am freakin Usain Bolt, first race I did was 8k in March 2008, I was flying to get a 9:59 pace. Now I am 3 minutes/mile faster. Oh and looked through the call log on my phone here at work to figure out which place have to go, crisis averted... |

I cannot put my finger on a number persay that I would call fast, but I do fall into the above trap where I say I am not a fast runner. Great question and one that I have put a lot of thought and math into the last couple of weeks. I think the answer will vary by person and their S/B/R strengths. Example, if you swim or ride slower than me, you will have to run faster to catch me after T2. RANT ON +++ (Which really pisses me off.....that is why running is such a focus right now!) +++ RANT OFF I base my running goals purely on my AG and I am an average runner now based on my recent results (36/70 in my run last race, 17/30 in the run in the race before that, can't really be any closer to the middle than that!). That being said, with my swimming and biking ability, I figure that I need to improve my running in my Oly 10K to around 7:15 to 7:30 mi/miles to podium around here in AG M40-44. I ran 8:08 min/miles during my 10K during the last race so I have some time to take off! Those numbers will then be used to create other distance paces for sprints, halfs, mary's etc. Dino |

I MADE her buy tickets to the Mets game on thursday night. Just as long as she's cheering for the orange and black! To chime in on the "fast" discussion, I pretty much try to only concern myself with my own progress. This year was my first year of being a coached athlete, and I have learned that it is self defeating for me to look at someone else's times, when I can only control my effort and speed by following the plan. You never know who will show up on race day. This can work both ways, in that maybe you place really high in your AG but you know you could have gone harder. Or worse, you gave it 120% and you finished way down the ladder cuz some super fasties (like Julia) showed up. I just think it's not good mentally to judge myself based on AG ranking. That's what works for me. I do, however, use my competitors as motivation to train harder even when all I want to do is hit the snooze and hide under the covers! I know that they are out there running in the rain, or heading out for a 4 hour ride in the hot sun, or getting up for Master's swimming at 5:00AM, and I don't want to be left in the dust on race day!!! Everyone have a great day!!! |

I'm really seriously thinking of doing it. Its a tougher race than the 1/2 i just did. Don't want it to be a let down race though. Really i want to race it, 'cause I want to ge the bike jersey, but i can't buy a jerswey unless i compete in the race. And next year, it will be to close to Canada, so I can't do it next year. I think I have to do it this year. $300 late registration though. ouch the front page of the site says enter code IMPACT2010 for 25 buck off. says for first 200 but also says limited space left. so maybe it'll work. do it. is michelle gonna be around that weekend? maybe i'll come "spectate". |
