Since a couple of you have asked... the Lowdown on Medifast.

(1) It's calorie controlled.  If you're following the regular plan somewhere between 800-1000 per day.

(2) It's carb controlled.  You're supposed to be getting in somewhere between 80-100 grams of carbs per day.  (The rest is balanced between fat and protein)

(3) You buy THEIR food.  Costing me 300+ per month (but then I'm not buying a lot of groceries so it kinda evens out.)

Basically, it's not recommended for people with a small amount of weight to lose.  I think less than 20 pounds, they don't recommend it.  Since I've got a lot more to go than that... I'm good.

You eat 5 of their meal packets per day.  (variety: they have soup/oatmeal/shakes/puddings, etc.)  It doesn't matter what you eat, just that you eat 5 servings.  Each packet is around 100 calories.  Some a little more, some a little less.  So about 500 calories per day from their food.  They fortify the packets with vitamins, and each is balanced with carbs/protein/fat.  They use soy protein.  Some people complain about the aftertaste, but it tastes fine to me.  Some of the food is a little bland, and there's some I don't like, and you can spice it up a bit, but I'm not really doing this for the gourmet flavors.  Then one meal, you have veggies and protein.  There's the rest of your calories.  No starch, no starchy veggies, no bread, no fruit, certainly no "sweet treats."  It's simple, but not easy.

The first week sucked for me.  I was tired, hungry, cranky, I had a headache day 3, and did I mention hungry?  You have to go through this to get to the "fat-burning" state.  Basically, the idea is if you don't have enough carbs in the system for energy, your body will be FORCED to burn the fat instead.  If you're going to do it, you really need to stick to the plan, cause one thing off plan (say a cookie) can throw the whole thing off.  You HAVE to keep the carbs in the range in order to get the benefit.

Energy?  Well, people report a "burst of energy" didn't happen for me and still not really happening.  Some days are good some days I'm just TIRED.  Obviously, the low calories plays into this.  You're not supposed to workout over 45 min per day, because (again) seriously lo-cal.  I think the people that have MORE energy are people who had sucky nutrition, and since the plan is nutritious, obviously, they feel better.

Why am I doing this?  Because I've been trying to lose weight for approx. 10 years, and doing triathlons for 7 and I'm still way overweight.  Maintaining, sure, but not losing, and I will NOT do the surgery.  I think it's dangerous and long term doesn't work.  For whatever reason, I haven't been able to find that magical balance to actually convince my body to let go of all this extra padding. So, I made a major trade-off for THIS YEAR.  Weight for workouts.  So far, so good.

What's that quote?  If you keep doing the same thing, you'll get the same results.

I decided to do something different.

Seriously though good for you. While its a good tool for some people I don't think it's a good tool for someone who wants to lead an active lifestyle. I was THIS close to looking into it myself but I knew deep down that I could do it on my own and I wanted to be healthy not just thin.

Many of the people I've know who have gone the gastric route are often tired, some have had complications that are still ongoing, and most have to be very careful about vitamin monitoring.

I agree, it's your choice and you certainly made an informed one! I know it's really hard to stick by your guns sometimes. Do you stay on this eating plan until you get to where you want to be?

... Or go beyond, like 185 beyond. My wonderful goal is in sight. O.k. Saling I know I said this before, like a wk or two ago. but I'm down and I'm gonna watch the eating very closely. Last time I was able to keep it off for about 4 days, let's see if I can go longer than that.

Yeah, you do.  Well, at least I'm planning too.  Obviously, things might change down the road, but I'm planning on staying on it until the end of this year, and then re-evaluating where I'm at.  I am losing weight fast though, so the re-evaluation point might come sooner, which would be great - cause I'm definitely not planning on doing this forever.

OK, I'll play

I'm a little late to the game of March Madness but here goes:
technically not trying to lose -- so I hope I'm not disqualified .....but hoped the Skinnies will keep me honest.

Returned from overseas where I was served normal portions of food for five weeks and lost 10 lbs. so am trying to maintain / lose a few.

My standing joke has been "in my 20s I was in the 120s, in my 30s, the 130s, and now my 40s, the 140s" Though I'm trying to put a halt to that progression as my new mantra is "I will not become a fat, menopausal woman, I will not become a fat menopausal woman."

So let's put me down for 143 as my March 19th weight. I'd be ecstatic if I dropped below 140 but I'm not gonna sweat it. My clothes are loose again, yippee!

To Kristin, the resident oenophile, I hear ya sista, I have to say, since I dropped the diet Coke for a glass of wine with dinner, I eat LESS and now NEVER eat dessert......I think I'm onto something here.....

I have been on vacation since last Tuesday and suffice it to say I didn't do so well in the excercise department while I was gone. I did pretty good eating wise, but also had two or three days where I probably drank enough calories (alcohol) to feed a couple of small children.

Last (2 weeks ago): 250.5

This: 254

Gained 3.5 lbs over 2 weeks which is definately not good, but I enjoyed myself and will work extra hard to get under 250 by next Wednesday.

I'll take that challenge, wink, wink, nudge, nudge! This wk, even before wed, I was already kicking it up a notch by adding two other routines to the daily training regiment, to see if I could blast through the 189- 190 bench mark. I had to take tonight off, however, I'm just exhausted. I've already amended my logs to reflect the changes. But for Fri. and Sat. it's back to kicking it up a notch. Might even add some extra cardio on my regularly scheduled day off (Sun). But, Sun, it is I'll let you know.

Welcome, it's good that you chose to stop in. The 'game' never stops it's a continuum since we're all pretty much a work in progress. Any questions, feel free to ask, On weds, we post a weigh in and saling keeps track of them (thank _od for him). Do you have a monthly goal of weight your shooting to lose this month? Most every body prays between 2-5 lbs, and some like me yo-yo so much that I'm still working on the 2lbs from last month and whatever else decided to latch on.
