I hate to be the devil's advocate here but I rode the loop a few weeks ago and I can't remember a time that I couldn't see riders ahead and behind me the entire time. This was three and a half months before the race. Have to say if I lived there and had to slow to a crawl just to get home, as there are many places with little to no shoulder, and lots of folks were riding two wide, I would get a bit testy too. Now I have gotten to know Suzy and know for a fact that she is very considerate and a hell of an individual as I am sure most everyone else is, but Please remember that we are visitors in their "home".
This is our dream not their's.
Please be safe everyone and be as understanding as possible.
As for the A-holes, well my new favorite saying is: it is what it is, get on with it!

Happy training

Got my first ride of the course in today, two loops.  Tough!  Not only hilly, but fairly steep at points.  And the road conditions are just like I remember growing up in Green Bay -- terrible!  Fun stuff for sure.

Sounds like fun    I get my first shot at riding the course this weekend.  We're planning on doing 2 loops as well.

Whose riding this course this Saturday? Anyone? I am planning on riding either a double loop or starting at the terrace riding a loop and returning to the terrace. I want to leave around 8am but that depends on when I get off work Friday night and over to Madison.

Posted this is the Illinois forum, but thought I'd broaden the audience a bit:

Pretty cool:

Naperville Running Co. is happy to announce a Q & A session with Triple Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington at beautiful Wentz Hall on the campus of North Central College on July 27th at 7PM. Tickets are $15. All proceeds benefit local elementary school running programs and North Central College. Sandwiches, snacks and refreshments are included. Please stop in or call the store to reserve your ticket.

Should also point out that the venue is within walking distance of the Naperville Metra station.

For those of us from out of town that are planning on visiting to ride the course.  Is it possible to ride the entire portion from the terrace out to the loop on a normal weekend day?  Are there any portions that are closed to bikes or just not recommended?

Thanks.

Did another 100 miles on the Verona loop today followed by a transition run.  The winds were a little lighter today, which made the course seem a bit more reasonable!

Chris - Others can probably answer your question better than I, but it looked to me today like it's possible to ride the ~whole course (except a small section through Alliant Center).  Some of the roads between Verona and Monona Terrace had quite a bit of traffic this afternoon and no shoulder.  Traffic is probably lighter on those sections on the weekend.

I tend not to ride the bit between the Terrace and Fitchburg due to traffic. You can park in a business lot along Seminole Hwy and catch up there. You miss a few miles from the 112 but I bet you still get a good work out with two loops.

Hotel Room DEADLINE approaching.....on July 13th our hotel room holds will be released and the discount will no longer apply....ACT NOW!

**Important update to this!!  The Dairyland Dare folks are having to CAP this ride at 1500 folks....AND, they already have nearly 1000 people signed up ....so sign up soon or miss the FUN!!**

Another IMWI 2010 Training Opportunity:

OKAY BT-Nation! I am sending out a reminder for the Dairyland Dare/Verona loop cycling "Camp" that I am presenting as part of my coaching service "Ironbrick Training".

I have rooms blocked out in Verona but space is somewhat limited....I've made arrangements for water and a porta potty on the Verona Loop and obviously the Dairyland Dare is a supported ride........
The camp will include a bit of "classroom time" on Sat evening to review race strategy and do a Q&A about what to expect at IMWI.  I have volunteered there enough times to have seen plenty of examples of good and bad plans/executions so let me help you plan for a great race!

Details of "camp' are on my website:

http://ironbricktraining.com/CampInformation.aspx

Low key....good chance to ride the tricky part of the course as well as put down some serious miles the day before......

Hope to see you there!

Seems like the number of people getting clipped by drivers in WI is increasing.  A woman was hit on KP on Sunday so please be careful on that stretch when riding the loop.  Drivers are usually not happy about bikers in this area and often show their displeasure.  The police did finally find the kid who did it.  Who hits someone and then leaves the scene?  Same thing happened last weekend when I was riding in Northern WI.  Crazy.

Hopefully 2 months from today we will all be waking up sore, walking sideways or backwards down the stairs wearing our new IMOO finishers shirt with a big smile on our face knowing we gave all we could the day before out on that courseLaughing

We got our first crack at the course this past weekend and yeah, it's tough!  Very fun course though.

I thought the road conditions were ok -  not great, not terrible.  Well, not terrible except one stretch of about 3-4 miles where it feels like you're biking on rumble strips!

We're making plans to go back the weekend of 8/21 and get one more ride in on the course before the race...

For those of you bring a crew to watch the race that aren't familiar with the course. I've used this doode's software (excel) twice and it works very well to provide a window when you'll be rolling through various spots on the course. Last years purchase went straight to local charity if I remember correctly. The excel program will expire after a year....

Hey, this looks cool.  I think I will do it as soon as I can figure out what I think my times will be!  This used with Athlete Tracker could really help my wife and son find me without wasting a lot of their time and effort.  Maybe they could go see that movie while I am out on the bike!

I was out there this weekend too. (Nice to see you DB!) Just a note to say that Lake Monona is WARM!! I did about a mile in front of the Terrace (at the IM swim entrance), and I was hot after a few minutes in my sleeveless wetsuit. It's shaping up to be a WARM swim! Even in Sept!....

Do you think it will end up a no wetsuit swim?  How many times has IMWI been too hot to wear a wetsuit?

It's never NOT been wetsuit legal. But I don't know this year... it's warm....

With the WTC rule change and the warm summer, I've been doing most of my swimming practice with no wetsuit and no pull buoy just to be safe.

I do not expect to be wearing my wetsuit for this swim. I did Pewaukee this past weekend without my wetsuit though it was only a sprint I actually liked it alot. Was able to nail my transition just over a minute and not have to worry about overheating.

So assuming it is not a wetsuit legal swim, what is the rule if you decide to wear one anyway?  My wife is actually a stronger swimmer then me but she will not do an OWS without a wetsuit.   I thought the rule was you simply couldn't qualify for kona but I'm not sure if that's right or not.

As Steve said, the water was really warm already and I felt hot after just an easy 45 min swim.

Here is the new rule as stated on the Ironman website:

Wetsuits may be worn in water temperatures up to and including 24.5 degrees Celsius/76.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures exceeding 24.5 degrees C /76.1 degrees F will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots. Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 28.8 degrees C/84 degrees F.

I doubt the water will be 84 degrees on Sept. 12

I was/am planning on full changes between transitions and am now wondering if we don't wear a wetsuit, what should I wear for the swim?  Is it true that all athletes must wear a top of some kind?
