Long day down here...got to see the Olympic marathon trials...really cool experience. After the early morning and lots of driving, got in my longest run in a long time...4 miles. Sad that I'm so far behind where I was a year ago but I did feel good out there today. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Morning all.

Got a nice 50 min run in this morning and it's finally getting cold enough here for everything to be covered in frost.

Scheduled for a 2 hour run today but I might give into the obvious sickness and take the day off.  Or I might get out for a short easy run just to move.

good morning!  good thing i am meeting my running buddy this morning because i am not sure i would get out on my own - it's -15C right now.  sunny with little wind but it is really hard to get out there.  we will probably do 10-15 km.  we will see how much we motivate one another.

We finally got some snow last night - about 4 inches - much better than looking at all the brown.

This morning I finally got in a quality ride done on the bike.  It has been about 10 days since I got a good ride done.  I did 4x10' intervals ranging from 85-95%FTP.  Legs felt good again.  I immediately went into a snow shoveling brick

Going to slap on the yak traks and make my way through the snow at lunch.

Thomas - I usually just try to do my tests at the same time i do most of my workouts.  This for me is in the morning.  I actually feel like I do a bit better in the afternoon after I have actually woke up kinda like you mention.  I would just do the next test at the same time.  A 20 minute test and 5 minute test this week...you da man!

Ryan-  I did the test at the same time I did the last two and I tried to assimilate the same conditions- the only thing different was the bike. First two tests were on the tri-bike. The last two in the road bike. I am usually a morning person but as of late I've been on one of those funks! lacking the motivation. Good thing I've got this thread and others pushing me forward... ok.. enough!!! ... good brick workout!

My swim kinda sucks.  It was getting better before my month off (stupid pool), to the point where I actually finally had a easy, medium, and fast speed.  Use to be it was all the same regardless of effort.  lol  So starting next week I will be back in the pool.  I am a bit concerned about my plan and how many yards per swim I am scheduled for (well, I am concerned for my shoulders) but they are going to be about 3500, 4000, 3500, and then I think in a week or two after that it bumps each up by 500.  I think at this point on those numbers I should get back my endurance pretty quickly.  Question is, should I go more often?  Do I really have any hope of getting faster by April by swimming more often?  I guess I am wondering if the gains would be worth the drain on my time?

Oh, my times before the layoff were about 2:00 per 100yds.  I could on speed work get to 1:50.  My "easy" swims were about 2:10, which use to be the speed regardless of effort

Send me a video of you swimming. A front view and a side view. If you can take underwater video even better.

This is from July, but not sure a lot changed.  I have been working mostly on not crossing over so if anything changed that would be the main thing.

i am not feeling good, i am achy, tired and cranky, i have skipped workouts since wednesday...blech.....

I had a dream last night that i got out of the swim at my "A" half iron race and wandered around looking for transition and my bike....sulking like a little girl....till i had lost like an hour, only to realize they had changed the transition area to a ways away from swim out, and i had wandered the wrong way as bikers and runners passed me while i was looking.  It was certainly a weird dream, anyone care to over analyze??  LOL

Sounds like your subconscious is trying to play games with you.  Good thing the dream was not in slow motion Laughing

5 min FTP power test for me this morning. I was not looking forward to this one as I knew the numbers would no have change when compared to the first one. Anyway, glad I did it as I have a number to work with now.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/141241808#

I have not downloaded to the Cycleops nor Cheetah to see in detail. I have to learn how to compare. I thought I was going to burn out half way but I had some left in the tank. I think the numbers would have been better if I had done this in the afternoon.

254 watts for 6'. Nice job!

Thanks Fred! I would love to see this number go up by another 30 watts but I guess I have to start somewhere. I bypassed buying a rear race wheel during summer and decided to get the power tap instead, knowing I would be using it this winter season. Specially when it was less than 400 dollars (bought it from a friend who was upgrading to a quarq).

Great job getting out there. It looked cold! over there in Houston. I was glued watching the race on TV. Great race! Glad you got a chance to be there in person.

Is it just me or the ^^^^date^^^^ on the top of the thread shows the 14th instead of 15th.. hmm.

Last night I got home.. I had energy and was looking forward to a hammer fest of Sufferfest's Revolver episode .

The first minute of the all out sprint - I did exactly how I should have felt- an all out hammer with pain in my face and RPE of 10/10. Recovery was just as bad- I was wheezing and trying to catch up my breath and before I knew it, it was time to go at it again. Needless to say, I knew right then that there was not way I was going to be able to do 15 of those. By the time I did the 4th minute, I felt my heart was coming out of my chest and it truly was hurting (the actual palpitation of the heart). I could have sworn I was at 190bpm. The Garmin & Tap both showed I was only at 164.

Weird! ... lets just say I only did four of those and ended up pedaling for only 20 minutes. Something told me to stop and try it another day. Maybe mentally I was ready but the body was not. Maybe another day....

Today I will be..... I should really RUN! .. need a lot more running not only because it all boils down to the last leg but because I need to SHED off the holiday blubber.  Maybe a small brick..no I should run.. maybe hills (bike), no I should run!

re:  to post hydration after a workout / hard workout.

to help repair broken down muscle tissue fibers after a hard and strenuous workout- we should hydrate within 5 to 30 minutes. There are many post workout supplements out there that will help in the recovery process. For recovery you need to take protein to help rebuild those fibers- something with a high concentration of protein.

What works for me and has helped in speeding up the recovery process is taking in Whey Protein Isolate. I take the EAS one. Works for me and I can stomach it by mixing it with water only. It certainly tastes better mixed with almond milk, a teaspoon of nat.peanut butter, and a banana. Yum! I buy it at BJ's - five lb bag for less than 30 dollars. Worth every penny!

Just did my first outdoor run in the wind and cold. I only had planned on an easy 30 minutes and just couldn't see driving the 20 miles to Lifetime for that. 15 mph winds and 20 degree temps was no where near the coldest I have run in, but with no acclimation time it was brisk enough. Now that I am done freezing on my run I am off to do some ice fishing .

Went for another swim today and it seems my fitness has dropped off a bit with the 3 weeks of no swimming! I will never claim to have been much of a swimmer, but I was able to hold 10-12 lots of 100m with 10-15seconds rest without my times changing by more than a couple of seconds, but today saw my performance start to drop after just 5 lots!

Good thing I have 3 months til my first race of the season

ugh, don't say that, I have been out a month and am less then 3 months from my race.  I think swim fitness comes back somewhat quickly though.  Might not build up any new speed but I sure hope to get my fitness back at least.

I have a question for the group.

I do not have the tools to train with power on the bike...the only information I have to use are HR and RPM.  My question is what RPM should I be shooting for for max. benefit?

My completely unscientific and non coach advice, at this point in your development the answer is "ride lots.". Ride some easy rides. Ride some hard rides. Ride fast cadence on the flats. Ride slow cadence in the rollers and hills. As Fred says, the style that works best for you will emerge
