Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I like your prediction Bill. The poor Oly - last year it poured with temps in the low 60's, this year highs in the 90s. The weather is always better for the Half. |

I hope my bike ride today will be better than my run yesterday. I am with ya. I have done short runs, and swims. Feeling the effects of the holiday weekend, and a tough week with my kiddos schedules. Getting on hte bike tomorrow, hoping to be back on track tomorrow. |

I hope you all are having a great weekend and training/racing well!! I had a nice run this morning that leads me to believe that I am mostly recovered! Awesome to hear Ken! I have been quiet because I've been very sick with a cold/sore throat all weekend. I didn't want to spread it to other people, but I really felt like cr@p to really put in a trainer ride. Finally started to get over it yesterday, and put in an easy trainer ride today just to get my legs spinning. Felt pretty good, like I was back to my old self again...if not, stronger! It's strange, but I think it's probably mainly due to being well rested for a while. Anyone here a Fleetwood Mac fan? I am not a Fleetwood Mac fan, but I am now! I went to their concert yesterday. Thank goodness my nose decided to stop running and coughing was kept to a minimum. I loved them!! Awesome concert! Happy Memorial Day. Here's a video I did a few years ago for my Dad who came home from his tour in Iraq, and my brother who was in Afghanistan at the time (he's home now). Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmmhcVJhaW8 DJ, what a great video! Thank you for sharing it with us. |

Veteran 169 Stockton-on-Tees | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I had a great weekend supporting all my friends who ran a half marathon (many for the first time) at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. I didn't enter because the original plan was to do my first HIM next weekend - but that is now in September. It was great waiting at the finishing line and the seeing the grins on all their faces when they realized they had completed the distance was brilliant. Because we have a wide range of abilities in the group the first man home got a time of about 1 1/2 hours and the last about 3 1/2 but- the time wasn't really that important to be honest. I have started 'getting serious' about my HIM - which means putting a bit of effort into my workouts. I have toyed with the idea of a coach and looked on line - but the prices are astronomical! However, I have found a place near me (recommended by a chap in my tri club) that does retul bike fitting. I'm not sure of the price yet but I think this will be more beneficial for me so my plan is to check that out next week. Hope you all have a great weekend. Jennifer |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Jennifer, I am looking at using the online coaching here on BT for my bridge from Oly to HIM (also in September). It's only $35 a month and I thought it might be a nice experiment for 3 months. My training partner has talked a lot about getting a real coach, but I for one have doubts that either of us will do what a coach tells us to, so I'm thinking this might be a cheap way to try it out. Also my husband points out he doesn't mind helping pay for an online coach if it means he doesn't have to hear me go on and on and on about my traning! Just think, a paid, captive audience! I'll certainly let you know how it goes if I go for it. Jaime |

What kind of core exercises do you do? I was just thinking last night that this would be a good addition to my summer, but not really sure what to add. I could ask Mr. Google, but I thought I would ask what people here actually use and what works best? TIA. I am headed to my first PT in about an hour. Hoping to get in a short run afterwards, depending on what they tell me... |

Hoping to get in a short run afterwards, depending on what they tell me... I have been doing some P90X videos (mostly core synergistics) which I ordered online, and this free online routine called "Iron Strength" for runners/triathletes. With the caveat that my core strength was so non-existent when I started I could not get up out of an Ikea chair without using my arms to push myself up (I BLAME THE 2 C-SECTIONS!) I have made tremendous progress this year with my core strength and I think it has really helped my swimming and my riding in aero. Jaime |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I mix up the core stuff from things I do myself to an Insanity DVD or a Power 90 DVD. There are also a couple of good articles with core exercises here if you click on the articles tab above. TGIF! Short swim for me this morning and a run some time! I think we have a couple racing this weekend don't we? |

Member 213 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Sorry, haven't posted in awhile and just caught up on reading others posts. As far as the Wisconsin Ironman loop - in a word: HILLS. Of course, I was told it was hilly and kind of dismissed it ("yeah, yeah it has some hills"), but flat parts are few. I had my shift levers moved to the end of my aerobars earlier this year and kind of wonder if that was a mistake now. I spent a lot of time off the bar due to going up and down so much and because of that probably shift as much as I should have. No races this weekend for me. First tri of the season next weekend - will see how the shifting goes on that one before making decision to keep levers where they are or move them back. - Todd |

Veteran 385 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Update on my fit. As I stated before, I had the retul fit last week. At the time, I told the fitter that I felt too high and I was surprised as to how much of a difference it was from where I was. I have been riding road bikes for over 30 years so I have a good feel for comfort etc. I have had three rides since and have lowered the saddle each time. The original fit raised my saddle by about 5 CM and I have dropped it 1 CM each time. I emailed the fitter and he said there is a chance that one of the sensors moved during the fit and gave a false reading. Fortunately, I am going to be in near the shop next week for him to re-look at it. |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Another good week of training. Last week was 17 hours of s/b/r. I am sitting at 10 hours so far this week, with a short run tonight planned. I have a tri training camp this weekend with some big riding and running and fingers crossed, some OWS. Next week is taper for the Rockford, MN (Liberty) half ironman distance tri on June 8th. My question to you all is this. How many day(s) a month to you not do any swim/bike/run? Do you have a coach? Does he/she specify specific days off? I know each person is different, but I am just trying to gauge what others are doing in comparison. My training goal, A race, is IM Wisconsin. Right now I am swimming 3 days a week, running 4 days a week and riding 4 days a week. Thanks, and have great races this weekend to those who are racing. Dwayne |

Dwayne I don't have a traditional one on one coach, but the program I started the first of the year is pretty close to it. I get very few days off, but am always encouraged to listen to my body if I need one. Usually I will have at least one day a week that is just an easy swim, which for me works as recovery. If it is a recovery week, I may have a full day off in the plan. Other than the last 2 or 3 weeks of taper, race and recovery I was averaging about 13 hours a week. That was specific to the HIM, so I expect when my next block gets loaded that it will increase. 3 swims, 4 or 5 runs, and 3 rides but the rides have been totaling 7 to 8 hours total for the week, so the volume is still there. Great training Dwayne! Just be sure to listen to your body and if you need a break, take it. |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed As far as core stuff - I go to the Y and use the Bosu ball and a stability ball and try to incorporate whole body movements that really stabilize the core. Then just the basics like planks, sit ups and superman (can't have a strong core without a strong lower back!) So it's hotter than Hades here in CT - got to 92 yesterday and suppose to be 94 today. Went for just a quick ride this AM and now it's time to dust of the tri bag, get organized and just see what happens. Can't make any predictions about Sunday's weather so ...just stick with the game plan for now. Things I want to accomplish this race: 1. More aggressive at the swim start. Swim is my best by far and last year they got my AG on the recap video (never realized how BLUE my goggles were) but I could see myself clearly at the front of the pack, then the horn goes off and about 20 people run and dive in in front of me. Last year it was both Men and Women in my wave, this year only women. 2. Focus/hydrate the last 16 miles - I always seem to drift off after about mile 40 and I'm already focusing on the run. This leads to not drinking enough that last bit on the bike and last year dropped my chain not once but twice between miles 40 - 48...ugh!!! 3. A solid run (this is where the heat may play factor but just have to wait and see...) Good luck to anyone else racing! Have a safe weekend! Maggie |
