TriAya - 2008-01-04 2:36 PM

I just have a long history of not listening to very good and concerned coaches/mentors/friends/training partners/self and then paying the price. As my coach says (and I've said it enough now it's my line too!) "I've already done everything wrong so that you can do everything right."

Blah blah blah common sense. NO FUN!

OK, OK, I know, take it easy, take it slow, listen to my body (even if I really don't like what it's telling me). I think it's the rain that's making me so grumbly today. How's the weather down south today?

(And really, thanks for all the advice. You're the best, Yanti.)

I didn't make it to the pool today, as my neck has been sore, whiplash-like, since I woke up with two extra bodies crowding me to the edge of the bed all night.  Will be attempting and run and a swim tomorrow, if the family allows!  They will, trust me, as I am much kinder when I get my workouts done!  We are taking the boys to birthday dinner in a while so I think after that I will just go to bed.  I really feel like I can't focus on my own life until after Jan 4 and all this kids' birthday stuff is put to rest.  Of course, the big party is tomorrow evening but I don't have to do anything but show up and pay for it.

I hope you all have a great weekend--sounds like lots of healing needs to happen all around--remember, it is very early in the season--I have to keep reminding myself of that when I start feeling down, that there's a long way to go and a steady progress to be made.  I want to say that I agree about not doing too much with a sore shoulder--I've had a bad one for over 20 years and when it acts up I just have to let it heal or it continues to get worse.

I also have a cold but hope to do some swimming.

I FINALLY got a confirmed date for my First event this year. April 20 So I imported the 16 week plan and found out I am a week behind. I will be adjusting for different days off and I for the run portion I am way past what they are asking for. Is it ok to continue my current running as I plan to train for a half that is in May. Just wondering is it a good idea to train for a Half and a Sprint?

Congrats, Shawn! How exciting!

Yeah, I trained for a mary and Oly at the same time (and that's fine. No problem). The mistake I made wasn't so much that I just dumped the running on top of the program--it's that I didn't adjust the hard or long bike/swim days around it. Now, some people will do fine with that (say, a long bike on Saturday and a long run on Sunday) but it really wore me down. I try to get 48 hours between runs of any kind, and also 48 between hard efforts or long workouts. The plans are generally pretty good at spacing things out like that. It also wouldn't have killed me, when I did back-to-back tough workouts, to take down the pace a notch or two on one or both of the workouts.

Yes it is exciting. I have another question I imported a plan how can I adjust the days of it so I have different days for the work outs. Also I save info and then I look at my planned workout it doesn't show up in my plan. I don't know how to view the planned vs actual if it is possible to. I need your expert mentoring on this one. Probably something simple and I am just an idiot.

1.5 miles is gold when you've been at nil. Not just huge for you--it'd be huge for anyone coming off these injuries. I'm so glad it feels good!

I managed about 1.5 walking and dayum, yeah, it felt good.

Hey everyone, always so much great info here and SMACK talk LOL!  Nice to know what type of wetsuit to buy . . . thanks!  I was a little lost on the bike discussion . . . I haven’t had any problems on the spinning bike – so this may be a stupid question, but should I expect discomfort on a road bike or when switching to clip-in pedals?  I ask b/c I just bought some shoes that clip-in.  Should I be afraid to try them for a whole spinning class?  I was planning to try Tuesday – hopefully I can get on/off ok LOL!  Will it be easy/possible to unclip and just ride that way if they bother me?  Ohhh so much to learn!!  Plus, I don’t use any special shorts for biking . . . but haven’t had a problem in spin or on my mountain bike the other day.  Will this be different if I'm clipped in?

I’ve been busy as usual, just finishing a project at work, so I had a pretty off week.  This week should be MUCH better, with more time for workouts and for keeping up here!  I did manage to get a bike ride in - outside - in Omaha on Jan 5 - SWEET!  I had to slow down for several ice patches, but overall it was good.  Also did a 5.5mi long run, actually aiming to build my base.  It felt sooo slow, but my knee didn't hurt afterwards, which was nice!  And, I have to admit, it felt a lot better overall . . . I am listening . . . it is hard though!  Thanks for the advice!

Erin – Glad to hear your arm is feeling better!  So you are looking at an Apr 4-5 Oly . . . cool, we really are on a similar track!

Beth – Sooo happy to hear you are getting some walks in and not feeling any pain!!  Thanks for the swim tips you posted a couple days back – I’m saving them all!  I will pay special attention to the one on summersaults LOL!

Yanti – Sooo happy to hear your neck is improving!!

Shawn – Great to hear you have your first event scheduled, it’s nice to be able to set your plan up!

Laura – Congrats on signing up for your first tri!

Ok, better run!  Hoping to make a 5:45 am class, then swim in the evening!

Have a great day all!

Renee

Why aren't the aeros working on your bike?  Is it your bike or just a coincidence?  Yeah, 7500 sounds like sort of a lot for a bike.

I've had a super busy weekend but did manage to run yesterday and swim today.  I am finishing up my sprint training plan for the remainder of January, then I will be starting up the Oly plan.  Too bad there aren't any tris around here for a few more months!!!  I posted some pix in my blog of a big mouse (rat?) named Chuck if you are interested in viewing....  This week is crazy hectic too, but I am determined to stick to my training plan--too easy to let it slide and then I suffer for it.  I also started my winter cleaning this evening.  TMI?  You tell me.  It's just a bunch of herbs from whole foods designed to clean out the pipes!!

What's everyone else been up to?

Hi Manatees/Mentorees/Cool Kids/Rockin' Triathletes/etc. !!!

Great to hear from everyone.

Shawn--I've been playing around with my training plan, but I can't get days to switch, either. I don't know if that is actually possible, but if you post something like Current Plan--Switching Days in the forums, Ron, marmadaddy or someone else will probably reply pretty quickly. Also, I'm not sure about Planned v. Actual, 'cause I have no problems with it (and can't create any). I do know if you don't have an updated version of Javascript, that a lot of the features generally don't show up/jibe/work.

If you can tolerate a stationary, the roadie should be much better. Clip-ins can change your position by a few mm, which sure can be a little different, but I doubt you'll feel it. Nah, go ahead and just wear 'em for the class--your legs will probably feel much better! In any case, you should always take a few minutes before any indoor cycling class to fit yourself to the bike you've selected. Even when instructors are fitting themselves, the #1 mistake is to keep the seat too low. If your hips are rocking or your leg is locked out at the bottom of the pedal stroke, it's too high. Otherwise, jack it up. Your knees will thank you.

Depends on the type of bikes and pedals they have whether you can unclip and ride that way. I think that would be a lot more uncomfortable than being clipped in, even from the outset (provided your shoes fit correctly, of course). Oh and a minor but important detail--there is a CLEAT screwed on to the shoe, right? 'Cause cleats usually come with pedals, not shoes, but you won't be able to clip in without them.

If you're fine without biking shorts, clipless pedaling is not going to make a difference.

hey yanti a quick question....

i am not the fastest runner, but aspire to become a stronger runner. a lot of the HIM plans call for specific mileage on a weekly basis. is it ok to tweak it so that my goal is to run for a specific time(1 hour or run/walk for 2 hours). just curious. not until last year did i realize the true benefits of running, and like i said i am no speed demon on the asphalt, but i want to get my body ready for 6-8 hours continuous activity(swim bike run). thanks.

2008 is almost one week old let go train some more. have a great day everyone.

Okay! Some thoughts and a question in return. By "stronger runner," do you mean faster or having more endurance or both?

So are you training for a HIM?

Yeah, it's fine to sub in hours vs. miles. Since it's running, be especially careful not to increase more than 10%/week (it's a general guideline--may be too much or too little, but most people will be safe following it--and better to underestimate than overinjure). Also, if you actually plan on doing a HIM, you will need to see whether the mileage you are actually covering in that time will (eventually) bring you pretty close to the distance you would run on race day. Running over the mileage is not a problem (just prepares you more for all distances) as long as you are careful not to increase too much.

yes i want to be faster and have the endurance to finish the 13.1. right now is more building that stronger aerobic base, and committing to running four-five times a week. in my mind i know it may take me 3 hours to cover the 13.1 miles, but if i can get use to running for 1-2 hours straight then the 13.1 will be possible. i know my logic maybe flawed, so thanks for any insight.

So I am not as slow a swimmer as I thought. It was my first time swimming in the morning before I headed off to school. I was in the slow and stoping lane I couldn't give the person in front of me enough room in the lane so that I wouldn't have to stop and wait for them. I got in the pool and things went great the first 100 was nice and smooth. I slowed my strokes down and was really trying to stretch them out.

My question to our swim expert is I know as the distance increased that kicking will become more and more important but I find that I swim so much better with just my arms and very I mean very little kicking. Should I be doing more kicking drills or more of a stroke drill. It was so weird to have my swim go so much better by just using my arms.

Hi, Manatees! It's no fun at all being off the Internet -- and away from you guys and my logs -- all weekend. Hopefully I'll get my home Internet fixed up soon.

My training is going OK. I went for a short run on the treadmill Friday night, which was...interesting. I stopped running on the treadmill a couple months ago when I noticed I was getting a weird hip pain that I don't get from running outside. The hip felt fine on Friday, but man, I have been totally spoiled by running outside. It's so much more fun! I used to not mind running on the treadmill at all -- in fact, I sort of preferred it, I think because I didn't trust my body to know how fast I could go -- but now it's so boooooring.

On Saturday I went out on my bike, and here's the weird thing: I really don't like riding my bike. Or rather, I don't like riding it for exercise. Just going out for a joy ride with friends? Totally fun. But spending an hour or more on my bike for training is so...I don't even know how to describe it. I just get bored and fidgety and cranky. The thing that sucks is that I did really well on the bike in my race last November, so I feel like I have the potential to be pretty good at cycling, but I really don't have the patience to log all the hours/miles I should.

Does anyone have any tips for getting over a mental hurdle with biking? I feel like maybe if I found a good place to ride that would help. I know there are lots of places in my area, but I either have to climb a *super* big hill to get there or hop in my car, and then all of a sudden I'm looking at three hours or more dedicated to a single workout -- a workout that I'm not particularly looking forward to in the first place.

OK, I feel better getting that off my chest. I know I just need to suck it up. *g*

Tonight I'm finally going to get in the pool again. Yay!

Erin--I feel the same way a lot of the time, although the more I train, the longer I can go before the boredom kicks in. . . . that said, last season I happened upon a group called the LUNAChix, sponsored by LUNA bars....they didn't charge for their weekly workouts, and it was really fun!  They have a Bay Area cycling group that they do, and there may be more.... http://www.lunachix.net/.  I worked out with their Seattle triathlon group.  It was totally noncompetitive (well, I worked hard to stick with the leaders, but there was NO pressure to do so)....and it was all levels of fitness etc.  They also varied where the workouts were and what they did--some weeks were bike/run bricks, others were OWS/bike bricks etc.  They also run lots of clinics.  I highly recommend doing something like this, or joining up with a cycling club who train for century rides, etc.  Maybe that will help keep you motivated??  What about finding a local tri club as another option?  Hope that is helpful!  I know what you mean about running on the treadmill--once you get a taste of the outdoors, doing it inside is much more monotonous!!
