gdale - 2010-07-12 7:54 PM Allow me a few family bragging moments...

Last week we were in the DC area to get Jeremy's prosthetic ear.  He was so happy to get it and has enjoyed showing it off.  He has also been thrilled not to have to wear a strap over the top of his head to hold his glasses up.  Here is a pic...

On Sunday, my middle son Tommy did his first Triathlon.  It was supposed to be 50 yard swim, 2 mile bike, .25 mile run.  Not sure all the distances were accurate because they were a little disorganized but Tommy had a great time.  He was pushing hard all the way...would have been first out of the water but was going in the wrong direction running up towards the beach.  I guess he has sighting issues just like his dad!  Here he is with his finishers medal...

There are a couple of more pics of Jeremy in my album and several more pics of both of them on facebook if you are interested.

Finally, my wife got the best news today.  Her father has been battling esophogus cancer for the past 9 months or so.  His treatments ended a couple of months ago and today he got the results of a PET scan that showed no signs of cancer!  He has been through a lot and it was great to hear that he is over the hump and on the road to recovery.

Great news all around  - and great pics!!

I just posted this in my blog, but thought I'd share with the group.

Well, I really didn't want to go swim this morning...and I'm not sure what is up with me other than that swimming for 45 minutes straight is just not appealing to me!  I know I have to do it on Sunday, though so got my a$$ out of bed and hurried to the pool.  (yes, suzy, which is still sorry a$$ for not going down to the bay and ows'ing)

I figured out something that I haven't got a real answer for except that it happens pretty much every long swim I do, but at about 20-25 minutes into a swim of this length (includes 2 HIM swims and my last Oly), I get extremely restless and bored and can't wait for it to be over.  And all I can think of is, oh, my shoulders are getting tired...and then I start slowing down and get a little frustrated.  Today and last week, I worked through it and kept my same stroke as best as possible, shoulders didn't feel tired except for a little at about 500 yds, but it went away.  I tried to change my mentality to "Wow, I'm halfway done! Time to bring it home!"

Hope that works on Sunday.

SSMinnow - 2010-07-13 8:22 AM Hey swimming cap people.....last night in OW and this morning in the pool, I am doing my thing and realize my cap is sliding way back on my head.  If I wasn't wearing goggles it would float away I am sure....it's never happened before, but suddenly twice in a row...and two different caps....what am I doing wrong/differently?

Hmm - There's a couple things that comes in mind, so I'm not sure if any of them applies to you, but something you can think of.

  • was your hair wet before heading to the water?
  • Was the inside of the cap wet before heading to the water?
  • Did you pull the cap on tight enough to get the pocket air out?
  • Is your hair tied up differently than before?
  • Are you turning your head too fast? (when I was turning my head too fast during my triathlon with the latex cap, it started to slip...it's just the way the water catches the cap...pushing it back)
  • Do you put the cap as normal as you usually do? Some people forget that they normally put it over their ears, or half way on their ears, etc etc.
  • Is the water more choppy than before?
Worse case if it continues, just get bobby pins and pin it.
Hope that gives some insight to your issue.  I have one cap for swim only - TYR silcone cap. It's thicker than a normal latex cap, so it lasts a bit longer and it stays on very well.

I'm no means an expert, but I do try! :-Þ

All good suggestions, DJ. I'd double-check the air -- make sure you press it all out.

Suzy, do you baby powder your caps after you wear them? I do, as it makes them go on without pulling out my hair, but it can also make them slippery. I do find that as my caps age they lose their "grip" and become stretched out and are more inclined to slide off. Bigger problem on continuous swims when you can't fix it on the walls. In the pool, I pull it back down during my turns. In the OW, I will pull it back down as part of my stroke -- just like a hiccup in the stroke, pull it down and move on. It's quick, it works, and is better than it falling off. I do not put my cap on over my goggle strap -- so the goggles are always holding the cap on a bit, but the strap can creep with the cap, so it's important to fix that as well (I do that in the same arm movement -- it's all just a quick slide).

Funny about head sizes... Mine is TINY. My 10-year-old son's baseball caps fit me. I tried to buy a team visor before the IM, but they weren't adjustable and both styles fell down on my head. Same with cute IM visors at the race -- all too big and could not adjust small enough. Clearly I need some AG wins to swell it up a bit...

Got screwed up by the sun this morning with me being a little further west.  At home in NY before 5:30 am the sun is blasting through my window in the morning waking me up.  This morning in KY, I had the alarm set for 5:30 and it was pitch black.  Had a hard time getting out of bed!!  Now I am sitting here at 9:25 and it is more light outside than it was when I finally got out and started running around 6:15...funny!

The summer is flying by too fast for me, but love to see another weekend right around the corner and I am sure a few of us are even more excited because we're racing!!!!

So....who's doing what? ready to podium or testing a strategy? lay out the details kids!

And question of the week that I've thought about a lot lately, what's your race distance sweet spot?  where do you do the best? what do you like doing the most?

No racing for me this weekend.  Next race is an olympic on August 1st.  Since I have only raced sprint and oly, I will pick oly as my favorite distance.  Long enough to make you work but short enough that you can push hard the whole way.

Good luck racers!

Double race week for me......aquathon tomorrow and as usual the goal is to have a strong swim and moderate the run because.....Sunday is my second 70.3 of the season and last BIG race before IM.  Still negotiating goals with Steve since this is only a B race, but my biggest objective is to conquer Lake Michigan...everything else will be gravy. Temps are supposed to be in the 90s so it will be a good opportunity for me to test nutrition, pacing, etc. in heat I have yet to experience this season.

I've said it before, but I LOVE sprints....so fun...go as hard as you can and hope you hang on throug the chute.  No nutrition to worry about and very little recovery to contend with....my fav distance thus far.

This weekend I am volunteering for a bike event here in Columbus. I am hoping to do a long ride on Sunday of about 75 miles or so. If that falls through I may try to push the pace for 60 minutes and hit it pretty hard. Wishing someone on craigslist would reply about a bike rack, i really need to get one.

No race for me, but I have the first Miracle Kids Triathlon Saturday morning which will be about like getting up for a race.   It is a blast watching the kids compete and have fun, you see the same exact things in the kids as you do in adults, anxiety, competitiveness, excitement, and all other mixes of emotions.

I don't have huge range to pick from, but I like the sprint distances, around 1/2 swim, 15 bike, 5k run.  I know the distances well and I am learning more than ever how to push to be uncomfortable for that time.  Sure sprints vary in lengths, some shorter some longer, I prefer the 1/2 swim, 1/4s just seem like you barely get in the zone before you are out and running.  15 is a good bike distance, although it suits me to have a longer bike course.  The 5k run is a good distance for me to navigate, I know mile one is going to set the tone for the run, mile 2 I have to push to keep pace, it will be where I make or break my goals, and mile 3 is hanging on for dear life at whatever pace I can turn my legs over.

No race...but i think I am volunteering at one with my girls...

It's weird to say, but I think my fav. distance is the 1/2. Not sure why I like it. Maybe being a bigger guy Ifeel like I'm built for the endurance and not the intensity of the shorter distances. Plus being a sucky runner, you can hide it a bit more time wise on the 1/2.

Hey MG peeps - Thought I'd check in and see how everyone's doing. Haven't been spending much time on the internet lately (only to log training and nutrition) due to business being crazy busy. Also haven't had a chance to go back and read posts so I hope everyone's doing ok, and that the racing season is treating everyone right....no injuries, etc.

I'm doing OK. My running still sucks, but after 8 months of slow running mixed in with injuries, it finally dawned on me that I'm going to have to lose some serious weight if I want it to improve or even keep at triathlon. Soooo....I joined weight watchers. Very excited about it! Guess I was was in denial regarding my weight, and what it takes to be a triathlete.

Got my custom orthodics broke-in, a new bike (love it!) and on a nutrition plan. Next is some *real* swim lessons from a *real* swim coach. After that I'm hiring a tri coach.

The heat index here has been in the 110 degree range, so my outdoor workouts have been sporadic. I am going to have to break-down and use the bike trainer and treadmill. Yuck.

I am also doing the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred in late August in Wichita Falls, TX. It's going to be so hot that I decided I'll just do the 50 miler (signing-up was a result of peer pressure from one of my friends

No racing... Thought about a local sprint but have NO speed yet, plus my favorite 10-year-old has his last meet of the season, an all-day gig, and I can't pass it up!!!

I love the HIM distance, even though I've only done one. You have to train for it -- can't bluff your way too much -- yet it's manageable, attainable, and still challenging. I am not crazy about sprints. Lots of to-do for a very short race and it's hard to go fast for the entire time. Olys are just like more sprints!! Super-duper hard for the entire time, only it's longer! LOL! All that said, I just enjoy racing and being around friendly peeps, but mostly I enjoy the training and making it a lifestyle and just going out, doing my thang, and getting my daily dose of endorphins.

fattyfatfat - 2010-07-13 7:37 AM so i get to the pool this morning.  water is cloudy, pumps aren't working very well and its colder than normal.  no big deal.  about 45 minutes in i start feeling a little sick.  it gets worse so i call it a day.  on the way out i ask this woman who was swimming with me if she feels weird.  yup.  so on my way out i stop by the front desk to let them know the pool is cloudy and the pumps don't appear to be working all that well.  the guys reply.  oh yeah.  some lady got sick in there last night and we were supposed to close the pool.

nice.

how did it taste?

do you mean how does it still taste?  ha!  not good.
