Burn out happens but a lot depends on your personality, why you do triathlon, who you train and race with, etc.

Yes, I still lurk around...  Doug is right, take it from someone who got obsessive and burned themselves out late last year.  First, if you find yourself climbing on the trainer at midnight for a three hour ride because vacation is coming up and you have to get that ride in, then you need to rediscover your balance. Second, it is very hard to yank yourself out of the burnout and start consistently working out again and when you do, it is like starting all over again and can be a bit discouraging when you struggle to run a 5k (again.)  When your season is done, find something else to do for a bit that provides some fitness benefits but is not tri-sports - maybe mtn biking or yoga or a month or two of something a little less "intense"

Sorry to interrupt, but had to share because I have been / am still there   Carry on....

Another cross race this weekend for me.  It's purely Cat 4 so hoping for a good result.

I'm heading to Jackson Hole, Wyoming tomorrow to camp and run the inaugural Jackson Hole Marathon on Saturday at an elevation of 6600 ft. Should be interesting coming from sea level and warm temperatures. As Kim says, "adapt and overcome"

Good luck at the cross race, Tony!

Hey, Andy! Glad you stopped by.

Beautiful photos, Steve. She is getting so big!

Another relaxing weekend for me on tap.  Driving the parents out to a baby party in the burbs.  Should be fun to see all of my relatives.

It's weird to be in an off-season...but since I have a few running races set for January and April, I can't be a slacker for too long, so I am just enjoying the down time.  Catching up on some reading, piano...and Ripley is enjoying the nice long walks.   Thinking about getting my TRX on next week!

Good luck to Tony and Roni on their races this weekend!

ps.  Nice to see you, Andy!

pps.  Christina and Jayne...Those were indeed cows on my swim cap!  I have loved cows since I was in college at UC Davis...we all referred to Davis as Cowtown.  I was so excited when I found that cap at a swim meet last fall...and trained all year for MOO in my lucky cap.  I almost got a small tattoo of a cow on my "cheek" one summer in college but chickened out at the last minute. Can you imagine how happy I was to see those sweet cows out on the bike course?  LOVED IT!!!

My off season does not begin until November. I have a race in NY this sunday out in Northport on Long Island. My oldest friend (we've been friends for 41 years) lives literally right next to the transition area. I am going to hang out at his house and then do the race. Will probably be done before he wakes up. The swim in in Long Island Sound.

The only down side is the long drive up and back. But if Don can do it so can I.

Andy we missed you.

Jayne

I think this is one of your most important considerations:

I don't want to burn out. I really want this to be a "lifestyle" for many years to come. This is probably the one and only thing that is giving my pause. I don't want to rush to that "Ironman" goal and then get bored with triathlon. Maybe this is a stupid thing to worry about. Maybe when I get to that goal, I will just automatically find a new "goal." Maybe work on a certain distance, or speed, or something.

This exact thing happened to me in marathoning.  After doing twelve and achieving my ultimate running goal, I got BORED with it.  I turned to triathlon which was a great revival, but I do wonder when I will hit the "what's next?" having started IM in my third year of the sport.

This is where I am at right now. I finished an IM in my 3rd year. This last month has been alot of loathing around. Which is to be expected. Its been a big build over the last few years to get here.

But I feel like I need to do an IM again next year. It just seems like that is what I need to do. I feel that if I do not sign up again for next year, that I won't have anything to shoot for. I'm trying to wrap my head around that. why.??

It sounds silly, but right now my head says how can the big race for next year only be a HIM?

Trev- I hope you have just been LOAFING around, because it wouldn't be much fun for Michelle and the girls if you've been loathing.  If putting an IM on your schedule is what will motivate you to continue to be healthy and living the active lifestyle and your family life can support it, then more power to you.  I think it's good to ask yourself why?  It's like defining your goals, what is important to you, and it goes a long way when having the discussion with your family.

For me...that feeling of accomplishment at the end of IM was like a drug that coursed through my body...and I was literally floating for the next week or so.  That is something I experienced at Boston, too!  Maybe it is those longer distances when my body is just at the limit and riding the edge...it is very addictive.  I have to catch myself when I am starting to get too crazy that way.  But it is very rewarding to set a big goal and do everything in your power to make it happen.

Hope this didn't get too serious...your post made me reflect on the "why" and the "need"

All that said, I kind of have an IM in 2013  on my radar for financial and family reasons.  Maybe one or two HIM's next year, a few marathons...it's going to be fun!

No racing here anytime soon.  My primary off season diversion has been moving.  The man got this great idea Undecided that we should move the majority of our stuff on our own so the house would be mostly set up when we move in.  That has been taking place over the last month and my contribution started the day after IM.  Between it and getting sick, I've had NO desire to SBR.  Movers come tomorrow so this will soon be over.  Sleeping in the new house tonight.

Would love to get in a little trail running in the next couple of weeks to enjoy Fall, but not pushing a thing.

You have to be willing to either a) do IM Florida with John in '12 or b) keep John moving for 140.6 miles.  Both sound a little painful, but if you're up for one of the tasks come on along!

Last Tri of the season for me this Sunday and first Sprint distance of the year!  It will be an interesting race since most of my focus this year has been on longer distances.  Hopefully, I still got some speed in this old bod somewhere......

I have not started thinking about off out-season (Just for you Fatty!yet due to the start of our Cyclocross season next weekend.  That ought to be an interesting addition to my LACK of cycling skills set!  Joooeeeyyyy!!!!   But, I am trying to prevent the drainer from becoming part of the regular routine till the snow flies!

I have really enjoyed the recent discussions on the "self-reflections" and the "whys" that everybody has for making this sport a part of their lives.  Thanks for sharing!  Laughing

AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDDYYYYYYYYYY!!  Where have you been?

Good luck to all the racers this weekend, be safe and REPRESENT!!!

Suzy recommended him to me,  great guy and he developed a pretty solid program for me when I ran MCM a couple years ago.  I think a couple others here have used him as well per Suzy's recommendation.  Compared to triathlon coaching cost he is very reasonable.
