Originally posted by Artemis Salty, saw your comment about warming up before my 5k.  I agree that it's something I need to do.  If the race starts at 7 pm, when do I do warm up?  I'll probably do about 10 minutes (is that too much?), but there is down time between finishing a warm up and starting race.  Not sure how you manage that.

Well, what have you noticed in training? You said that you usually feel warmed up a mile in? Is that accurate?

If that is the case, I would run a mile (20-30 minutes before) and then, just before it starts do a few strides and call it good.

Just for your reference, I run anywhere from 2-4 miles to warm up for a 5K, usually 45 minutes before or so. Then I do 2-5 strides, just before the competition starts

Yep, I think it's around a mile where my legs feel loosened up and ready to go.  If I start towards the back, I get a couple of running strides in before I cross the start line.

It seems a little strange to me to run that much before a race.  I'm just not in the habit of it, and I really wouldn't bother for a distance race because I'm so slow.  But, in these 5ks, I feel like I could run faster if I wasn't so stiff at the beginning.

But you should practice warming up and cooling down in all of your training runs.

I guess I warm up in that I run easier for the first 5 - 10 minutes.  For cool down, I typically walk around for about the same amount of time.  I don't know if that counts as a warm up/cool down.

Should I

A. Run another 5000 (hopefully with properly counted laps)

B. Run the mile

C. Run the 3000

D. Run the mile then run the 5000

If you have a strong desire to do the mile, then do then mile next time.  If there is another time, do the 3000.

I was gonna throw this out there in a few days time, to see if we wanna put a manatee team in. http://marathontalk.com/challenges/magic_mile.php

But seemed like an ideal op to mention it now.

It does. But if I were you, I might get a little more specific, doing exactly what you would do before a race (with some flexibility in case you find one thing works better than another.) That way when race day comes, you already have a routine down and it's just second nature. It's not just a one-off, race day thing.

I'd probably just do it in whatever track meet I choose.

I love that they are age/gender graded! That really evens the playing field.

Yes it does. On the easy run days, it may not be as noticeable how much it helps simply because it doesn't take as much to be ready for an easy run, but any time you're going to run harder do pay attention to the warm-up and how the workout went. Generally, when you're going to go hard, you want to be ready to go from the time it's supposed to be hard. Be it a tempo, steady state, intervals, a race, etc. What I'll do isn't much different from what Adrienne said earlier. A few miles to get things going, and for me, likely progressing up in speed in the later parts. Then some strides and making sure I have nice range of motion in all the joints. For a training run, I'll just go right into the run from here. For a race, there will be some time in between.

Not feeling it, but good try.  Leaning towards Jen's suggestion of Lola but I do like Leila too....Lola Blue, sounds kind of edgy. think it's a winner.

I'm thinking about my warmup for my ride tonight, but I have a hill after about one minute's worth of riding.  *warm up goes out the window*  But warmups are great and make a difference.

Tom's a pretty awesome name.  I recommend considering it.  Or to feminize it, Tomasina.

Yep... but I didn't want to imply anything about the not-yet-broken-in beauty. As for Fachmie Blue... that just sounded uncomfortable.

IDK, Fachmie Blue is catchy. Kinda makes me want a blue bike. Fachmie Black crosses a line I think...

Excellent read, wow.  Someone here on BT has a great RR from IM France, that is another tough as nails bike course.  She said of 2500 competitors there were only 300 women.  One guy had something happen to his tri bike and he had to rent some commuter hybrid with a basket on it--but he rode that beastly course.

I am watching a show about guys who are training/attempting to become Army Rangers....Is it is weird that I am becoming motivated to train more by watching it? I don't even have an interest in joining the armed forces (well, I am a little to old to do that anyway...) either.
