Ok Todd,

You can't just leave a teaser like that and not go into it any further. Start pressing those buttons.

My personal opinion on Galloway:

I think it is an excellent program for beginners. It is a great way to start running without killing your body in the process. That being said, I can't wait til I no longer need it. I would love to be able to just run, but I know that is a ways off. Til then, run/walk it is.

Well, that's a pretty good start on my take on it...but, really, it's pretty hard to get at the breadth of my issues of it in a medium like a Web forum (works much better in a real-time setting). If my asbestos suit ever comes back from the cleaners, I may have a go at it here.

Hi guys! Sorry I've been out of the loop. I just realized there were four new pages of posts that I hadn't read! Yikes!

Lynn, great job on that half-mary! Can't wait to read the report on it!

Morgan, are you ready for Surf City? I'll be doing the 5k also, so I hope I get to meet you.

My plans for this week:

  • Today - run on treadmill
  • Tue - bike commute and swim
  • Wed - trail run
  • Thu - bike ride
  • Fri - swim
  • Sat - rest for race
  • Sun - Surf City 5k! First race of the new season!

Jocelyn and Morgan,

I hope you have a fun run at the Surf City.  I envy you guys the sun so much.  Not the real estate costs, just your climate.

Scott,

Are you serious?  It's freezing this morning out here!  I heard on the  radio on the way to work that it's 49 degrees out right now ... brrrrr!

Jocelyn and Morgan--

I'm still considering coming down to HB to spectate on Sunday...partly depends on how much biking I get in on Friday (Sunday would be a long ride day for me normally). If you can either post your bib numbers here when you have them or PM me with them, I can be on the lookout for you (and have my wife also on the lookout if she comes along).

Good luck!

46 when I pulled out of our apartment building's garage this morning! (Heat wave! It was 44 yesterday!)

Okay...we'll stop now...right, Morgan...

I'll trade.  18 here with more snow coming.  At least, they claim we'll miss the ice storm.

FWIW -My race report is posted:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=145565

I am a major weather wimp, too. 30's in my backyard this a.m.

My plan this week:  not much -- some spinning, some weights and core work and maybe a run later on. I dont' have a structured workout or training plan for the first time since last January. I'll start ramping up again here in a week or so.

Good luck to all you Surf City peeps -- Morgan and Ambular, right? Anyone else?

At 10 degrees, we take off our shirt, paint ourselves green and gold and head to a Packers tailgate party, though most around these parts choose black and blue and orange of da Bears.

I know, it's really pathetic, but what can I say? I did live in Indiana for 17 some years (cold, snow, wet and then humid as hell in the summer). Also braved two Montana winters -- that's gotta count for something? I really do feel for the cold weather warriors.

LOL...I almost posted earlier that I lived 31 years in places like upstate NY, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota...but I chickened out.

Well, aside from California I've lived in Arizona ... both Phoenix AND Tucson!  You haven't experienced cold until you spent a winter in the high desert!

Seriously?  No.

And yet, I find it hard to sympathize as you spend winter doing battle with 50- 75 degree temps, riding and running outside, enjoying the beach and otherwise soaking in Vitamin D as I spend a half hour shoveling another 2 inches of snow off the drive this morning.

Oh heck, maybe I'll go fish the ice fishing tourney this Saturday.  I've fished in it 5 times and cashed checks for second place twice.  If I didn't have to slide on bad roads for an hour to get there, going would be a no brainer.

You all make sure you use your sun screen now, ya hear?

Yes, my car said 42 degrees this morning! BRRR! Two weeks ago it was balmy and summer-like. I like that a lot better!

Todd, I'm going to packet pick up on Saturday, so I'll post my bib number later that evening!

Todd & Jocelyn,

My bib number is 17615.   If you go to the race site and and follow the "registration" link, you can enter your name to confirm your registration and it will give you your bib number.

See you there!

On a more serious note: Thanks for the reminder...I forgot on my two hour run last weekend, because I was wearing a long sleeve shirt. Long sleeve shirt doesn't prevent skin cancer on the face. (Neither does snow...so y'all keep that in mind on those long outdoor training days, no matter what the weather's like.)

Re-reading this, I had to laugh--sounded like the commercial with Peyton Manning:

"Take a hike, Manning!"

"You know, I'm gonna do that...weather here is sweet!"

Question for those of you who have done longer workouts:

How long of a run or bike does it need to be before you start feuling during it. I know it varies based off the person, but I'm looking for a general ball park on when I will need to start taking in calories. My long run is starting to get over an hour so I'm curious.

Thanks

Matt,

I'm no expert, but I remember there being a 45 minute general rule ... Eat 15 minutes before a long ride or run, and then re-fuel every 45 minutes.  Someone jump in and help me with the actual calories, and let us know if the 45 minute rule is off base ...
