Had some interesting news tonight at a local tri club meeting.  We had the IMCda race director speak and he told us about a few changes to the race this year.
1.  Gatorade will most likely not be sponsoring the race this year.  Instead of Gatorade endurance there will be some form of Powerbar drink.
2.  There most likely will not be practice swims this year due to insurance reasons.  Apparently WTC is involved in a couple of ongoing law suits, primarily in Florida and Wisconsin and this made it too expensive to host these practice swims.
Just thought I would share these things.  Surprises the week of the race are never good.
Happy training everyone.

That would be too bad.  I don't think it's a huge deal as I don't think they can stop us from swimming anyway. I like doing a complete loop of the course on Friday morning.  I wonder if they will have any of the bouys out even if it's not an official swim.

I guess if they don't technically "sponsor" the swim that will just mean we don't have bag check and a DJ and all that jazz.  Which isn't all that big of deal.   But I still plan on swimming anyways to tes tout the wetsuit and see how cold the water truly is   Hopefully the buoys will already be out- or at least small ones or something.  I'm getting excited!! It's coming quick!

I'm surprised to hear that Gatorade will not be the sponsor and instead it will be Powerbar.  I wonder what's up with that and if it's just for IM CDA or all other IM's plan to switch?  I usually bring my own sports drink with me so it doesn't impact my nutrition plan.  However, if others plan to "live off the course" guess they need to switch to Powerbar to see how they handle it.

yep, we (wife and i) will definately be swimming to see how cold the water is......   a couple years ago i about had a heart attack (no really a heart attack!!) on friday at just how cold it was, but was fine after about 2-3 minutes.

anyway we will be there to swim unless they post armed sentries there to keep people out of the water...

we started week 7 of 20 this week, hard to believe only 13 to go!!!

LOL....  no i didn't complain (except to the wife at the time) but it was frick'in COLD!!!        for those of us that have to do the majority if not all training swims in a heated pool it was a bit of a shocker, so i was actually really glad to have fri/sat to get into the lake to adapt.....   a polar bear i am not!!

runnergirl - 2010-03-23 9:20 AM Underpants run?  Please elaborate....sounds interesting....

Slowtwitch has a nice photo gallery of the underwear run in Kona this past year...  Looks like a blast...  I am not sure how widespread it is with the IM/Tri events.

I know they have had an underpants run in Canada before as well.  I thought it was on Saturday, but that might not make sense the day before an IM?

LMAO...  That is pretty funny!

Regarding the swim practice...  I know that at the Boise IM 70.3 this past year they were not allowing practice anywhere near the swim course the 3-4 days prior to the event.  They actually had a few security guards patrolling the area giving warnings that they would DQ you and you would not be allowed to race.  Crazy....  We did find other areas of the lake to swim, just not near the course.  Frustrating...

I have diarrhea of the mouth today….  Does anyone know of a good IM Time Predictor/Calculator.  There are a couple of good ones as they relate half marathons and marathons that I have found to be pretty accurate.  I think Mike mentioned a few months ago that one rule of thumb is to take your half IM time and double it and add an hour.  Seems fair.  Although I know that a lot of this is a crap shoot, especially for the newbies like me.

I just don't want to push the bike to hard ("get stupid") and bonk on the run.

First off!!!  IF there is a underwear run, I am positive they outlawed ALL GRANNY PANTIES!!!  In fact not sure why they even make those anymore..... LOL

Second, try this predictor out...  http://www.triathloncalculator.com/

LOL, nice real nice....   so the knee highs might be alright, with heels of course but we still probably need a vote from the guys on allowing the granny panties......   with threats like that your bound to get the Borat Mankini, then we ALL LOSE!!!   LOL

Hrm my HIM last year was 5:43x2= 11:26+1:00 = 12:26 ish and my IM was 12:16... so pretty close.  It looks like I picked up just a touch of speed in the time between the two.

I did the 2009 Wildflower HIM in 6:35, then 2009 IMWI in 14:12.  'bout right on.   Hope to do much better at CdA this year!!  This year's Wildflower is only 12 days post-Boston.  I may be limping this one!

Nice race!  Are you happy with your splits?  Results?  recovery?!?

Yeah, I was shooting for 5-hours, so to go 4:55 was nice.  Thanks for keeping an eye out!  I'll work on a RR this morning.

The bike is where I made up most of the time.  We caught a break with the wind.  I think it was helping us more than hurting this year.

I did get a bit off course on the swim since the turnaround is right into the sun.  I was hoping to go 32 and I was 34.  Not sure how much the detour (a lifeguard had to paddle over and get me back on track) affected my swim.

Was hoping for 2:45 bike and went 2:37 - yeehaaa!  There are some tough hills on the course which will always be there and we turned into the wind for a couple of miles (brutal crosswinds were downright scary on some downhills with the 9.0 wheel on the front), but I knew it was going to be at our back for much of the last 10 miles into T2, so there was that to look forward to.

I took time in T2 to put on socks and lace up trainers since it looked like I had plenty of time to break 5 hours coming off the bike (I had my Newtons ready to go if I felt I needed to try to run a 1:30).  I've been battling blisters and the last thing I wanted to do was suffer through the half sockless with hot spots.  Still, I went out too fast (ran 6:30s for 1st 2 miles) and had to make a bathroom stop on each loop of the run.  I was reduced to a shuffle a few times on the false flats, but was able to salvage a 1:37 (I was shooting for 1:30-1:35).  A lot of the run is along the beach, so there was a nice cooling breeze for long stretches of each loop.

There was great support on the run and we had several of our training buddies (and a TCSD aid / cheer station) along the way.  We had a group of about 4 or 5 friends volunteering as finish catchers and chip removers, so I just hung out in the chute and watched the finishers stream through for most of the afternoon.

The bike course is the notoriously tough leg of the Oceanside course and we were fortunate that it didn't have all of it's bite this year, due to some favorable wind conditions.

I hung around to watch the awards and the Kona and Clearwater rolldown.  As you might expect, Kona went pretty fast - it was mostly just 1 spot per AG and it was claimed by the champion.  I almost got into Clearwater, but was 4th out of the guys that wanted the 3 remaining rolldown spots in our division.  There was no rollover from any other men's AGs as there was for one of the Kona spots.  I was in the most populous group, so I thought there was still an outside shot, but the 75+ took his spot and that was it.

I'll rest / recover today (it's a bit odd to "sleep in" until 7 and not have a race or a big training day on a Sunday) and then ramp up / taper for Boston and then start the big build for CDA.  After yesterday's run, it a bit hard to fathom doing double the distance, but I've said that after half marathons before, too.  At least we don't have to do it next week.  Cheers to all.  I hope you're having a great training weekend!

My report isn't quite as successful - did a nice 65 mile ride today and got my first tan (burn) line. Woohoo . 90 days and counting...
